The season really gets underway this week so a lot of old favorites like The Simpsons, Heroes, and Boston Legal (along with some that shouldn’t be like The Batchelor) are back so you do know what to expect with them.
Here are some noteworthy and mainly new picks for the week:
The War: A Ken Burns Film (Sunday - Wednesday, 8:00 p. m., WNET 13; Sunday - Wednesday, 10:00 p. m., WLIW 21) All you need to know is that this is Ken Burns takes on World War II in this seven part documentary which concludes next week. Following tonight’s presentation on channel thirteen, the station shows two of its local companion pieces - the first episode of New York Goes to War followed by New York War Stories.
Chuck (Monday, 8:00 p.m., WNBC 4) No it is not a show about Chuck Scarborough. Instead, this is new series where a computer geek who works in a big box electronics store gets secret information uploaded in his brain. Hmm . . . we think we saw something like this on UPN in 2003 called Jake 2.0 and it didn’t even last a full season. One good thing it is a real scripted show in the 8:00 slot for NBC, something that the NBC-Universal 2.0 changes seemed to shy away from in favor of fakeality type shows.
The Big Bang Theory (Monday, 8:30 p.m., WCBS) This “new” sitcom has nerds and a hot blonde neighbor. We swear that we have seen something like this before, but all these bland sitcoms tend to jumble together.
Journeyman (Monday, 10:00 p.m., WNBC 4) This new series has a San Francisco newspaper man who finds that he can travel through time. Of course he goes and changes things sort of like on another time traveling show NBC used to have called Quantum Leap.
Reaper (Tuesday, 9:00 p.m., WPIX 11) This new show is about a slacker who’s parents sold his soul to the Devil and now he has to be the Devil’s bounty hunter. This actually sounds somewhat original.
Little Rock Central: 50 Years Later (Tuesday, 8:00 p.m., HBO) In 1957 nine black teenagers were prevented from attending Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This documentary takes a look at the school today and has an interview with one of the nine.
Law & Order: SVU (Tuesday, 10:00 p.m., WNBC 4) Cynthia Nixon guests as a woman with multiple personalities who killed her daughter. Also, Adam Beach joins the cast reprising his role as Detective Chester Lake this season.
Cane (Tuesday, 10:00 p.m., WCBS 2) This new CBS drama can be best described this way: take Hispanic actors that are big names (Hector Elizondo, Rita Moreno, and Jimmy Smits), take Dallas remove the oil, add sugar, move a couple hundred miles, and you get Cane.
Bionic Woman (Wednesday, 9:00 p.m., WNBC 4) Yes, it is a modernized version of the 1970’s um… classic show. Brit Michelle Ryan, who was on the iconic BBC soap EastEnders, stars as an American.
Private Practice (Wednesday, 9:00 p.m., WABC 7) The new Los Angeles set Grey’s Anatomy spin-off starring Kate Walsh and a bevy of people you have actually heard of like Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Audra McDonald. So if you liked Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll probably watch, if not you probably won’t.
Life (Wednesday, 10:00 p.m., WNBC 4) This new cop show has a twist – the protagonist returns to the force after he served over ten years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. So we can probably expect the normal cop show crime solving while he goes after those who framed him.
Dirty Sexy Money (Wednesday, 10:00 p.m., WABC 7) This new show has an idealistic young lawyer who has to take over his father’s job as the overseer of a wealthy New York family. Don’t expect too much local color though, as the bulk of the show appears to have been filmed in Los Angeles.
Big Shots (Thursday, 10:00 p.m., WABC 7) This new show appears to be Sex in the City but with male CEOs.
Moonlight (Friday, 9:00 p.m., WCBS 2) Another “new” show from CBS, this time about a good vampire who is a detective. Wasn’t this show on The WB and called Angel or was it on CBS (and later syndicated) and called Forever Knight?
MADtv (Saturday, 11:00 p.m., WNYW 5) The guest host is celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, so expect even more wackiness to ensue.

I might tune in for Bionic Woman. Pity it's not on an hour earlier. That would have put it in the same time slot as 31 years ago. Those were the days. Now the big question is when does Lindsay Wagner appear in a bit of stunt casting.
Reaper was actually called Brimstone and was originally on FOX. Not so original.
half of these new shows will be canceled by mid-season or within the first two-three episodes or start changing around time slots.
how i met your mother returns tomorrow! YES!
(dont slag it off.. i was first turned off by the laugh-track and allaround "sitcom" vibe of it.. but the writing on it is great, as is the cast.)
TV is good for goofy background images with the sound off while you are doing something else. To actually regard it directly as a language unto itself is like not to have a life.
Still not getting Brit Michelle Ryan as an American bionic woman. I get using Hugh Laurie as "House" (I mean, come on, it's Hugh Laurie!) But she has no star power over here and there gotta be ten thousand American actress who could pull this off without having to fake an accent. I've seen her in Eastenders and she's OK, but not in a way that screams (ala Max Bialystock) "That's our Bionic Woman!" They're not even broadcasting it in the UK AFAIK...
Reaper is totally a rip off of Dead Like Me.
