No One Injured in Midtown Taxi Fire

2007_09_taxiinfernoam.jpg

Yesterday's taxi inferno on West 50th Street, right outside of Rockefeller Center and various NBC offices, was put out about an hour after it was reported. Fire officials think that the fire was caused by an overheated engine. Yikes!

Miraculously, no one was injured. The cab driver, Samuel Dockery, told the Post, "I was getting ready to sign off for the day when, all of a sudden, smoke came from under the dashboard. I jumped out of the car." He said the cab, which he's been using for six months, had never given him problems before, though there are an inspection coming up in the next month.

A forklift removed the taxi - you can see in these pictures how the yellow has been burned away from the cab.

Any mechanics in the house? Is it normal for the engine to catch fire if it is overheated? I've seen plenty of radiators boil over. One was caused by a stupid high school friend who never checked his oil level. The car kept running without the key in the ignition and boiled over but no fire.

It must have been the crown-shaped air freshener in the back that did it.

OMG TERROR. PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIRE OMG!!! GOTTA GET BACK TO LONG ISLAND OMG!! TERROR. 9/11. TERROR!! OMG!! Oh wait, what? So it ISN'T TERRORISM? Even though the whole thing "smelled of 9/11?". Thank god.

It's "miraculous" nobody was hurt?

BY WHAT? Cars catch fire all the time. It's no big deal, yet this is the second item posted on Gothamist about it. Jeez.

The Crown Victoria, from Ford creator of the Pinto.

Idiot.

Wouldn't it be a hoot if the GPS device overheated?

user-pic

the crown vic consistently gets 500k + miles on it. Try that with any other car. So there was an engine fire. So what? The Pinto comment is offbase at best.

"though there are an inspection coming up in the next month"

Is that a direct quote? Or just more of Gothamist's super writing and editing skills?

Yeah the taxi version of the Crown Vic can get that mileage but its not the same car sold to regular consumers.
Try getting that mileage from the retail version of the car. Not going to happen.

its just strange because today there was another taxi explosion outside port authority... hmmm.
