- Nationals 9, Mets 8: If a four-run lead can't stand up against the Nationals, against whom will it last? The Mets are hoping what was a seven-game lead as recently as Sept. 12 stands up, but they're not helping their fans maintain regular heartbeats. John Maine hit before he threw a pitch and still couldn't get out of the fifth. That's against a team that's last in the Major Leagues in runs scored and playing without its best hitter in 2007, Dmitri Young. Manager Willie Randolph isn't the most popular man among Mets fans these days, and they can't be blamed for feeling that way. That doesn't absolve the relief pitchers of their inability to get anyone out. The odds still favor the Mets' making the postseason, but why does it have to be this difficult? Philadelphia's 14-inning win in St. Louis means the Mets' lead is just 1 1/2 games.
- Yankees 12, Orioles 0: The Yankees appear to be through with making their fans sweat. They won their second straight game against the Orioles, with Mike Mussina pitching well again in the rout. If the Yankees keep this up, they might catch Boston in the American League East. A Red Sox loss in Toronto on Tuesday leaves the Yankees 2 1/2 games back. Detroit's loss to Cleveland extended the Yankees' wild-card lead to 4 1/2 games. If Mussina has one more good start, he'll likely earn Joe Torre's trust for the postseason. Doug Mientkiewicz and his hot bat also appear to be on their way to doing that, but Torre should think twice about whether a few great games cancel out a large sample size of offensive impotence.

God, I hate the Yankees. I hope next year they spend 600 million on their team.
I would take offensive incompetence from Mientkiewicz over Giambi's defensive incompetence in the playoffs.
Don't forget: Betemit can also play first.
Mientkiewicz is making a good argument for being Joe's starter at first. Watching the replay of Giambi's misplays at first against Boston made me thankful we've got two other options.
Further verifying the pitching turnaround, even Veras looked good.
who is that knocking on the door Wille? ohh its the old man from Philly, and he has sights on the pennant.
Lets all have a laugh at the Mets.
Why oh why have the 2007 Mets decided to impersonate the 1962 Mets at this point of the season. They cannot let the worst team (historically) in the history of professional sports sneak up on them like that, since the only thing the Philadelphia Phillies deserve is to be relegated to AAA or eliminated (see Brewers, Milwaukee).
Just as sure as the leaves of the trees start to turn color and fall off their branches, so once again Red Sox fans start to turn colors as their team makes it's yearly tumble to it’s death

Not since 2004. As much as I don't want the Yankees to win anything the look on their faces during Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS made up for a lifetime of disappointment. Watching the Yankees get manhandled by the Diamondbacks helped too. Only Byung-Hyun Kim kept that Series from being a 4-0 or 4-1 rout.
the mets will always be ny 2nd team. just like jets and islanders.
We'll see how you feel after the Yankees take the division this year, AGAIN ...
The Sox had the lead all year then choke it away in the last two weeks of the regular season...not exactly moral boosting behavior
Yeah, the Yankees spend the most on their team, but they have the biggest market in the country and the most fans. It's a business.
I still love 'em.
yay for yankees!
not exactly moral boosting behavior
My morals are fine as is my MORALE. You sure are a Yankee fan - not very bright.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in tax subsidies doesn't hurt. Nor does a rigged system that puts YES on basic cable and forces everyone with cable TV to give money to the Yankees whether they watch the games or not.
"You sure are a Yankee fan - not very bright"
I know I'm stupid, that's why I love the Yankees
I am going to bet that even if all three teams (Mets, Red Sox and Yanks) make the playoffs, none of them will win the WS. The teams with the biggest hype and predicted to win it all(except Red Sox in '04, but they were the wild card) have not won since 2000. So it could be the Cubbies year.
The Mets have their own station on basic cable as well - SNY.
No one is forcing you to buy basic cable in general. You are also paying for Home & Garden TV and other channels you probably don't watch as well.
Oh, so THIS is what it takes to get the Mets listed above the Yanks. Thanks, Gothamist.

I'm not so sure I would agree with that. Some television is essential like the news. If it wasn't, the government would not have mandated that the networks show some news in return for use of the spectrum. But the world has changed in the last 50 years. If you want access to the basics like CNN you shouldn't have to get 100 channels of niche programming. I would hardly call a system where your choices are 120 channels or nothing a "free market". I live in Manhattan so my choices are Time Warner and. . . rabbit ears. My parents in Connecticut got better reception with a roof antenna than I can get with rabbit ears when the cable goes out. And I can't get DirecTV (apartment faces north, not allowed to put dish on roof) which is essentially the same price for the same channels anyway.
The cable TV industry tries to justify this all or nothing approach to channels by saying if they didn't do it then new, small channels would never get launched and have time to build an audience. Maybe but I also think there is a chance we would have fewer channels but better programming. How many new channels are there that are nothing but reruns of crap from 30 years ago (TV Land, ESPN Classic)? Anyone that gives a crap about watching the Rose Bowl from 1978 should buy it on DVD and spare me the expense of subsidizing it on cable. Same thing with Bonanza reruns. Who is watching this?!?!? I don't think I cared as much 10 years ago but we've reached a point where they add channels and increase the cost at double the rate of inflation just so they can increase revenue. I can't possibly consume this much television (even with TiVo) so it is essentially wasted money. If there was some great leap forward like Time Warner boosting my internet speed then maybe I'd be less grumpy. Around 10 PM I think my neighbors all start downloading porn because my internet speed drops by about 90%.
YES and STV should be out there in the 400s of my cable box with NHL Center Ice and other sports pay services. I can only assume the demand is there and they know it.
MY

SUCKS
Playoffs your haven a laugh. Mets won't even qualify for the wild card.
and how is it possible that Mets fans are even MORE annoying then Yankee fans.
hard to believe Harry.
Some will win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues
Oh the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on...
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feeling...
Yanks two out, playoff number at seven.
Mets in third in AL East.
Mets fans: Look at the baseball standings. The Yankees have won more games than ANY National League team. The Yankees have lost fewer games than ANY National League team.
#21 - So what is your point? Does it matter comes playoffs time? Tigers barely made the playoffs last year and kicked the Yanks/A's asses, while the Cards almost didn't made the playoffs and won it all That's why I have the Cubs winning it all this year, if they make it.
The Yankees will win the AL East by a half game. The Red Sux don't have Manny and the pitchers are worn out. No World Series for you!
