The Times Takes Another Visit to Peter Luger

2006_03_luger.jpgThe Grey Lady is paying a return visit to Peter Luger Steak House in tomorrow's dining section. This New York institution was last reviewed by Ruth Reichl, who awarded it a hefty three stars, proclaiming it "the best steak in New York City." Her description of the Luger experience is almost pornographic:

You know the steak is great before you even taste it. You know it from the fine, funky, mineral aroma that wafts across the table and announces that this is a piece of meat. When the waiter appears with the platter, he stands there spooning a mixture of butter and meat juices across the sizzling porterhouse in an exercise of pure theater. He is merely prolonging the moment, allowing the aroma to revive all your primal instincts as he stretches out the time until you can actually sink your teeth into the flesh. Finally he serves, slowly doling out slices of fillet and sirloin. As your mouth closes on the incredibly tender piece of beef, aroma and flavor come together, exploding on the palate.
Has it stayed three-star worthy since 1995, over a full decade ago? Tune in tomorrow, and we'll see what Mr. Bruni has to say. We're curious - how many stars do you think Peter Luger should get?

Luger's is still very good. isn't any extremely popular steakhouse going to be victim unrealistic expectations though?

p.s.

lions are going to the super bowl

Went there about six months ago. Our steak was half burned, half undercooked and the waiter presented it to us with his little "perfect medium rare" speech. There might have been a one inch portion in the middle that was medium rare, but the rest was just inedible. Gross, I will never go back.

I love Peter Luger. I get to go at least once a year, and I look forward to it every time!

steak should be eaten one way: rare.

Due to the hipster contamination in Billyburg since 1995, I'd have to knock it down to 1 star.

There goes Gothamist promoting meat consumption again. That review is carnal and disgusting. People who enjoy steak are piggish.

i want to fuck peter luger so bad.

Will there be vegetarian options available?

there's nothing wrong with eating meat, especially from Luger's

vegetarians are pussies. luger's steak should be eaten rare or med. rare. it deserves three stars in that it is only 1 of 2 places in the entire US that dry-ages their porterhouse for 8 weeks, but in my opinion sparks cooks a more flavorful peace of meat.

Yes, [9]. The vegetarians will be eaten by the people who understand how the food chain works.

wow another unappetizing picture to promote an overrated gothamist restaurant.

Sparks is a great place to have a final steak done for to go. Just ask Paul Castellano and his chauefer.

Nobody likes a vegetarian.

The one and only time I ever ate at Peter Luger, there was a big wad of already-chewed bubble gum. How did I know it was bubble gum and not, say, spearmint? I could smell it. Ewww. Kind of ruined the whole experience for me. When we spoke to the waiter about it, he offered us free dessert. When we declined the free dessert, he looked at us curiously and walked away. That's it. No manager visit. No apology. Nothing.

I will never, ever go back.

Oops, the bubble gum was folded into my napkin. Sorry, left that crucial part out.

Vegetarians....please remember that there is such a thing as carnivores in the animal kingdom. If humans had never eaten meat, then we'd never have developed the brain capacity to become what we are today, as meat provides a lot of what is required to feed the brain.

Animals kill other animals. They would kill us if they felt the need to as well.

I agree that that picture isn't all that appetizing, but the one time I went to Peter Luger's (about a year ago), my steak (rare all the way) was wonderfully delicious. And the others at my table thoroughly enjoyed their meat as well.

That being said, I wouldn't say it's the best I've eaten at in the city.

[18] is not a neuroscientist.

The shit in your meat is more likely to give you Mad Cow than help you on your SAT.

Anyway, on average, vegetarians have higher IQs and are more attractive.

black n' blue is the proper way to consume a steak coming out of their broiler. it'll cook on the plate, right in front of you.

the lions are so not going to the SB jackhole

hey Morrissey [7] shut the fuck up you judgmental twat.

" Our steak was half burned, half undercooked and the waiter presented it to us with his little "perfect medium rare" speech"

Um... THAT IS MEDIUM RARE. Learn your correctly defined meat temps before you start publicly attacking businesses.

I wonder what percentage of participants in the poll have actually eaten there? 10 - maybe 20%?

You don't win friends with salad.

Damn... now I really want a steak.

that steak looks too well done for my taste.
I like mine so rare, it's blue.
I go there at least once a year to have our yearly intake of cow.

Instead of hunting for deers or bears, we should go hunting for vegetarians/vegans/freegans instead.

#18 - Also all vegetarians have garlic breaths and pass gas like a steam engine.

why is it that vegetarians always look on the verge of death? especially the hair. it's always a f**king rats nest.

"Anyway, on average, vegetarians have higher IQs and are more attractive?"

LOL - then why does it seem that they're all single??

"Oh, I'm a vegetarian".
Dealbreaker.
Culinary equivalent of having cats.
Enjoy your broccoli!!

Mmmm...polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons...heterocyclic amines...mmmm

Lugars is quite good--been going there once or twice a year for about 25 years. But a better steak, and a better steak house can be had at Strip House on 11th Street.

That's the best steak in the City.

Went there once, wasn't really impressed. I didn't like the steak very much and wasn't totally wowed by the sides. I much prefer Quality Meats, personally.

their creamed spinach is the shizznit

I haven't been to Luger's in years, but one thing I do know is that Sparks sucks ass. And vegetarians are dweebs.

I'm a vegetarian, and I guarantee I could kick the ass of 95% of the people talking shit here. That's what protein powder is for.

Meat. Meat good.

I think Ted Allen said it best:

"You know anyone who's vegetarian? Yeah, me, too. Don't you just want to tell them to calm down and have a steak?"

There used to be just three premier steak houses in NYC: Luger's, Sparks, and the Old Homestead. Now, with Wolfgang's, Ben Bensons, and the improvements at places like Gallaghers, the competition has gotten intense and they can't keep up. But I'm sure this will be the wake-up call and they'll get their act together.

Maybe pay a little less attention to the merchandising (PL's steak sauce, etc.) and more to the meat.

Last great steak I had was Wolfgang's, but like I said, Gallagher's makes a nice piece of meat, too.

No stupid.

We went a few months ago for a friend's birthday and were not all that impressed. We had just been to Argentina and were eager to see how the steak there compared to the steak here in the US. Luger's has such a stellar rep that we really wanted to like it. I wouldn't say that it was bad. The steak was cooked proficiently and the sides weren't bad either. It was nothing that was so good that we would return for it. I know that they revel in their down-home-we-don't-try-too-hard-because-we're-so-awesome-vibe, but the place was a bit of a dump and maybe they should try a little bit harder. It's not that they need to renovate (though it wouldn't hurt, the upstairs could use it) but they really shouldn't rest on their laurels so much because it wasn't that good. Almost every single steak we had in Argentina (except for one) was better than what we had at Lugers.

The other factor for us was the price. I hesitate to bring this up because in other conversations people always say "well, you're gong to a steak house, you didn't think it would be expensive?" I don't know, $160 per person for a meal seems a little steep if you're not going to be at least a little bit blown away, satisfied, or eager to return.

And again, it wasn't terrible, just not that great for the price and as far as the "holy grail of steak" goes, not by a long shot.
