Manilow Refuses to be Hassled by Hasselbeck

200709ehm.jpgBarry Manilow, who is out promoting his Greatest Songs of the Seventies, has refused to share a stage with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who was barely walking in the 70s. The crooner left a little message on his website yesterday for his fans letting them know he wouldn't be on The View today, saying "I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out. It’s really too bad because I've always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs."

Manilow vs Hasselbeck, it's on! The reason for his request is that Manilow is a major Democratic fundraiser, and Hasselbeck is a conservative (or as Manilow put it "dangerous and offensive"). Clearly the producers of the show wanted to get a heated interview with the two, and when he refused -- they refused to accommodate him. Daytime television and easy listening have never been so edgy!

Last night on Barbara Walters's Sirius radio show, she and her producer Bill Geddie discussed the situation, which went something like this...

BG: I wouldn’t even be talking about this except that he called up TMZ. So, now, what are we going to do? Last Friday we got the word that he’s very close to Rosie, and he doesn’t want to appear.

BW: Well also, Elisabeth Hasselbeck is not an enemy of Rosie’s. None of us are. If Elisabeth disagrees with Rosie, and Rosie disagrees with Elisabeth….nobody is to my knowledge is taking sides. All I can think of is that wonderful song (Walters breaks into rendition of ‘I Write the Songs That Make the Whole Sing’…adding her own lyrics) Provided They Happen to Be Liberals.’

BG: It got me thinking. You know, I’ve never heard Jane Fonda say ‘I won’t sit with Elisabeth Hasselbeck.’ I’ve never heard Susan Sarandon say that. If someone was conservative and said ‘I won’t sit with Joy Behar’ I’d react the exact same way. I don’t understand this when this became an issue for him, and why would you go off and then call TMZ and make a big column item. Is it all about publicity? Is this all it is?

Interesting how a few lines on TMZ can get someone more publicity than a network television show these days.

barry manilow's star just went up in my book.

"Her"? Little too much to drink last night Jen?

To #1.

Star just went up? If a conservative person absolutely refused to be on a show with a liberal host I bet you'd be up in arms.

This is a ridiculous reason not to appear and basically just shows that Manilow is an idea bigot. Just because somebody disagrees with you on politics does not make them a) dangerous, b) a bad person, or c) somebody you should instantly hate.

I think it's "she and her producer" but what the hell...

You know, I want to say Yeah, Barry!... but the guy included "My Eyes Adored You" as one of the greatest songs of the seventies, so... I just can't pull the trigger on that one.

I'm glad to see Barry's on the same side as me (well, sort of) but if you're gonna do the show, do the show. And if you don't want to be interviewed by the people on the show, then just decline.

But if you do the show, make sure you sing "Teenage Lobotomy" and "Lookin' For A Kiss."

user-pic

yes, manilow's star just went up.
the guy's loaded up the waazoo with midwestern frau frau money. he gots them where he wanted, in his wallet.
"idea bigot" damn you people make up hate words just to hate, don't you? Why do you love to hate?

Manilow rules, Hasselbeck drools.

And The View is about 1000x better when BW is not on.

user-pic

I don't like being around conservatives either, but it's not like they're conservative coodies are going to infect me.

What a strange, strange, strange looking man.

user-pic

Tim N. just went up a notch.

Unless Manilow was going on the show to talk politics he's being a douche. I wish people like him would realize they aren't helping.

user-pic

good grief man, get some balls and stop your Mary-in

user-pic

Who's Barry Manilow and why should anyone care if he is on a flake show anyway? Isn't Rosie O'Donnell that fat person that sang the Star Spangled Banner holding her crotch? She had that TV show "Roseanne". I remember her.

user-pic

Why do you love to hate?

Pot calling the kettle black.

user-pic

Aaah, the tolerance of the Left.

or as Manilow put it "dangerous and offensive"

I think his "dangerous and offensive" label of Hasslebeck is Manilow's polite way of saying "she's a fucking moron." That's at least how I interpret it. When you have Manilow money, you don't need to suffer fools.

I disagree with Tim N. in that I think he can make any demands he wants. Separate out all the blue M&Ms for all I care. If they don't want to accommodate him, that's their right as well.

user-pic

yes, why does the right love to hate so much.
it's always hate, hate, hate.

user-pic

hey barry, little lizzy owns you. barry wants the show to be renamed- The View...from the left

user-pic

Instead of ranting about the war in award acceptance speeches maybe one of the high profile Hollywood Democrats should use his/her air time to berate the others into not acting like childish retards.

The candidates succumbed to the demand to not debate on Fox News. Yeah, polls show that only slightly more than 50% of Fox News viewers identify themselves as Republicans. that means the others are independents and yes, Democrats. But sure, let's piss off half the country and make the next election closer than it should be.

user-pic

I have a job so I cant say that I see the show but, from what I have seen/heard, Hassleback doesn't speak for Conservatives; she's just a foil for the other ladies. Having an opposing view is always a nice thing, even if its errant, misguided, naive or however people label her.

If Liberals consider Hassleback to be "dangerous and offensive" i am scared to think what they consider Rove/Limbaugh/O'Reilley and so many other Conservatives that actually have power over others.

user-pic

O'Reilly is hardly a conservative. He may be right of center but he's much more of a libertarian. His real problem is that he doesn't bother to get his facts straight

this (#3):

This is a ridiculous reason not to appear and basically just shows that Manilow is an idea bigot. Just because somebody disagrees with you on politics does not make them a) dangerous, b) a bad person, or c) somebody you should instantly hate.

it's stupid that he declined to go on the show, i have to agree with Bill Geddie that he did it for publicity, why else would anyone contact those scum at tmz? if he disagreed with Hasselbeck (hawt!!1!!) he could have, i don't know, argued with her & shown how his views have merit? nah, that would be productive.

user-pic

Hassleback is 'dangerous and offensive' because she's a good looking blonde haired white girl. Conservatives love chicks like that, it validates them.

Good point, Zodak. Especially when you think it's not like he'd be debating Milton Friedman or Bill Buckley.

'Course, then again, he's not exactly Noam Chomsky, either.

I met Manilow once in an elevator. Surprisingly tall, and amazingly life-like.

Barry Manilow is a pussy. Some healthy debate would have been good to see -- even, more likely, some unhealthy debate. However Barry didnt want to jeopardy any publicity for his new album, and he knew there might be a slight possibility of that dumbass Liz bringing it something political.

user-pic

Hillary Clinton unveiled her healthcare plans yesterday. Seeing as she is from New York and will almost certainly be our next President you might think Gothamist would mention it.

What sort of behavior do you expect from a guy who grew up in Williamsburg?

HIPSTER!

user-pic

Dangerous and offensive ideas should be banned, then and only then we will have

One Thought
One Mind
One Will.

and we will go forward towards the future guided by our great leader The Manilow.

All Hail The Manilow.

user-pic

who watches this show?
rhetoric question. the people who watch this show could barely fit in the studio audience chairs.
the audience scares me. when they waddle out the taping and onto columbus ave.

Why do politics even have to come into it? He's there to promote his album, and I don't blame him for not wanting it to be a clenched-teeth experience across the table from someone he openly loathes.

ha ha, cuz fat people watch The View. Guest, you so funny.

user-pic

I wouldn't want to be interviewed by Lizzy either. Her voice is annoying and the moment you have an opposing view point she starts to get shrill. She can't handle calm and rational debate. Go Barry for having standards. Sure, it was also publicity, but so what? He is in the ENTERTAINMENT business. In fact, so are Barbie and the girls. They probably refused him on purpose in order to create a situation that would give them more publicity as well.

user-pic

I don't like Elisabeth Hasselbeck anyways. I'm not a fan of Rosie nor care about Barry but there is just something I don't like about Elisabeth. Maybe she is a little to young for the show. She is only 30 years old but wants to have views and opinions like she been on this earth for 50-60 years. To me she is still a little immature with very little life experience.

Way to be accepting and tolerant of others Barry!

user-pic

She can't handle calm and rational debate.

Neither can most of the far left.

user-pic

Like #13 said, gotta love the tolerance of the left. Why is it that people who preach tolerance are often the most intolerant?

Hi, my name is Rosie, and I'm a Troofer.

user-pic

two khunts on the show, Barbara walters who should just die already and hasselbeck. Joy behar is annoying too. friggin 4 gossiping harping yentas and that producer should be ashamed to have testicles.

Manilow was wrong. Hasselbeck is a pain, but Manilow was wrong. If he didn't want to do the interview is one thing, but using it as a publicity stunt and sounding off to TMZ, ugh.

user-pic

Manilow should be more concerned about how his plastic surgery makes him look like a clown. His is worse than Michael Douglas but not quite into Marie Osmond territory.

user-pic

First of all this man is an entertainer not a politician and I think if he felt like this when he was starting out, he would have kept his opinions to himself.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion that I may agree or disagree with. That is not offensive it is just another opinion.

Barry get a grip what would they say in Brighton Beach about that?

user-pic

It's sad that Barry Manilow and Elizabeth Hasselbeck are the ones stirring political debate around here.

39, do you actually read Gothamist? Lately there has been a lot of political debate that didn't involve Manilow and Hasselbeck.

Love it.. Someone bowing out in the name of there beliefs. At least he has the balls to do it. Dont understand his music though being I wasnt born in that era.

Because remember folks: You have a right to think as long as you think just like me.

Grow up, Barry. There's a whole wide world of people out there with different opinions.

user-pic

Who are these people that think their opinion is worth anything other than a bunch of guys slinging down cold PBR's at the local tavern?

Barry Manilow? Elvis Presley? Tutekamen? Barbara Wawa? Who cares what they think?

A soso Jewish singer from Williamsburg is what the nation needs to lead them out of the debacle in Iraq?

user-pic

I'm not sure about the conservative part, but Elisabeth Hasselbeck is an abomination and a no-talent. The View didn't have a lot of credibility to begin with but when they hired a Plain-Jane, reality "star", the show officially became a joke.

I applaud Manilow only because he had enough conviction to not do something he didn't want to do despite going on the show to plug an album. I'm sure part of it is because of her political views but another part could be that Hasselbeck is not his entertainment industry peer.

user-pic

He's afraid that the good looking bitch will call out his Jewish roots and make him look like the ongoing fag that he is.

He should open a theater in Branson, Missouri and let intelligent beings alone.

Johnnie Maestro did a better rendering of one of his famous tunes.

As usual the right wing misunderstands simple information.

Barry doesn't object to her being "conservative" he objects to her being "dangerous and offensive". Remember how she actually supported the Abu Graib torture? Not even Bush did that.

Shame that so many conservatives think this nazi freakshow is their poster child. Or maybe it's good. It shows them for what they really are.

I couldn't give a f*ck about Barry Manilow but I can now respect his standards.

Irrelevant.
As per the good 'ol Report of the Commision on Pornography : (paraphrase, can't find my old copy) "appeals to the prurient interest and lacks redeeming social value".
Really folks, if your political expression is based on your like/hate of Barry's interviews, we're screwed.

Dadoc

user-pic

"Seeing as she is from New York and will almost certainly be our next President you might think Gothamist would mention it. "

You're kidding-about H Clinton almost certainly being the next President!

OH-Hasselback never supported torture-get your facts straight.
