Extra, Extra

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: an unstable building at 37th Ave. and 31st St. in Queens, a stabbing on State St. and 3rd Ave. in Brooklyn, and an organ transport on the Cross Island Parkway in Queens.
  • GrandOpening on the LES is following up its single-table storefront Ping Pong concept with another slice of Americana: the drive-in movie theater. $75 will secure all six passenger seats in a ragtop Ford Falcon. We recommend burning the two extra tickets for a less awkward double date.
  • In what to us makes NJ Gov. Jon Corzine seem like a candidate for a "Ripley's, Believe it or Not!" segment, the reformed seatbelt wearer had 10 pounds of excess bone growth removed from his femur during surgery today. Ten pounds!
  • The Times' Freakonomics blog notes that panhandlers may earn more than low-ranking NYPD cops.
  • Four tales of people who just had to leave the city.
  • The New York Post will soon start publishing a Page Six glossy magazine that will weigh in at almost 100 pages and come as an insert with the Sunday paper.
  • Friends and family gathered today for the official naming of the block at 53rd St. and 8th Ave. as Jerry Orbach Way.

What, no mention that the Times is eliminating Times Select and making all content (and some archives) free again?

From the article re NY'ers leaving:

"More New Yorkers leave the city every year than move here, a trend highlighted in a population study released last week.

The report showed that in 2005, 300,000 people left New York, and only 200,000 arrived from across the U.S. and other countries to replace them."

Then how is it that the City is supposed to have 9 million people by 2015 or whatever? I someone b.s.'ing us?

The population of the earth is increasing... and nobody is moving here from other planets.

Yes, I think the PlaNYC projections are based on expected reproduction, especially by new immigrants. If we can change that, maybe we can limit development?

it's called mexicans and puerto ricans having 5 babies a week. More blacks are leaving cause it's expensive but they hate the winters so they move to atlanta. Poor whites who accidentally had kids but are responsible to want to take care of them come to their senses and realize they can't afford to take care of them. which leaves us with superrich bankers and the people who live paycheck to paycheck dreaming one day they will be or marry a superrich banker.

Speaking of well-earning panhandlers, you know that smelly whiney white little runty guy who's always getting on the 1 train, saying he's straight out of the hospital? You should see the giant wad of money he keeps in his sweatsuit pants. I wish I had a camera -- it was about four inches thick.

I'm pretty sure the outflow numbers refer to New York vs the rest of the country. The deficit is made up with births and immigration.

#2 People having children will increase the population.

I'm tired of Grand Opening's shtick. Somebody put the space to good use.

Page Six may the only thing the NY Post has going for it. The rest of the paper is worthless.

It doesn't surprise me Corzine had ten pounds of extra bone removed from his femur. It's most likely occurred to compensate for the weight of his wallet.

The panhandlers are the low earning police officers. How can they live in the city with the shit pay they receive?
