Man Fatally Gunned Down in Brownstone Brooklyn

2007_09_22clifton.JPGJust a few blocks away from the Pratt Institute, a man died after being shot three times on Clifton Place yesterday afternoon. Lawrence Sumpter, a Staten Island resident who had grown up in the Clinton Hill neighborhood, was being chased by a gunman. Sumpter headed to 22 Clifton Place, a brownstone in renovation; a witness told the Post that Sumpter tripped and his pursuer "just got over him and emptied [his gun]."

Another woman told the Times she heard the gunman shouting, "You think I’m a joke! I told you not to play with me!" A worker at 22 Clifton Place had run to the basement when he heard the shots. Sam Saliman said, "I went upstairs and saw the guy. He looked dead."

The killer was apparently known to neighbors as "Psycho" and was believed to have two guns. He was also riding a bicycle. Another witness said, "He looked content. Everybody was moving out of the way." Police suspect the killing may be related to a turf war and have not made any arrests yet.

The street's residents who knew Sumpter, who ran a window installation business and had four children, described him as "caring and generous" - he had sponsored neighborhood children's school activities and sports.

should i be worried? as a white hipster who lives in bklyn (cool way of writing brooklyn huh?) and doesn't know where clifton is could someone just simplify it and tell me if its the white side or black side of bklyn? if it's the white side, then YIKES! if it's the black side, whatever.

care to elaborate further on your comment, #2? I want to gauge how much of a prick you are.

What's up with this white side / black side BS? I guess white Pratt students' lives are more valuable to some? This took place two blocks away from Pratt. Check your google map.

Da heck kind of ghetto stuff is this?

user-pic

Whoa, #3, I'm going to assume you are being sarcastic.

user-pic

there are black people in brooklyn???
i guess i must live in the white part...thank god!

i used to live on the next block from there. scary. i guess people can be relieved that no bystanders got hurt in the middle of their dispute.

hey #4, i thought all anonymos posts weer form the same person...therefore #2 was you

prick

if the neighbors all knew the perp had two guns, then by golly why did they not call the police and retreive their award?

user-pic

#11: cuz that would be seeling out to whitey, duh

The murder happened 1,100 feet west of Classon Ave (aka the border between Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill). Both neighborhoods are majority black, so #2's comment isn't relevant (aside from its troll-like insouciance), but you can say that the murder happened in the more prosperous of the two neighborhoods, Clinton Hill.

Ignore the racists, folks. It's less fun for them if no one engages.
The main thing is, I think we can all agree that it's a classic mistake to either joke or play with a man named Psycho who is known to carry two guns.

um doesn't matter the color, jerk. i could be called a white hipster very easily. i live on clifton. its every age and color. wake the fuck up or stay in williamsburg. people like you give us all a bad name.

Who the hell are most of these idiots posting bullshit about the Black/White side of things?!! Do you not understand the value of human life? Someone has died and you're worried about the stupid boundary that your RA's tell you not to cross when you start orientation at Pratt?!!! Give me a break, the people of this neighborhood (MY NEIGHBORHOOD-oh and I'm a Pratt Graduate also, oh and I'm black)are respectful hardworking people who look out for their neighbors. So until you actually get to know the people that you're encroaching upon, please don't make blanket ignorant statements-or take your ass back to Iowa where you below-OH AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF BUSHWICK TOO!!
