Early this morning, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. WABC 7 reports that the police received "several 911 calls for a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian lying in the roadway" after 1:10AM.
The victim, a man in his 30s who officials believe may be homeless (he had no ID), was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Hospital. A 51-year-old man, who was driving a 2006 red Chevy Avalanche, has been arrested at his home in Queens in connection to the incident.
Here is Transportation Alternatives' map (with data from 1995-2001) showing crashes involving pedestrian for that part of Lower Manhattan.

Last night at the intersection of West 4th Street at 10th Street, a young woman driving a Black Jeep Liberty clearly and unlawfully turned left onto West 4th from West 10th against the red light (she didn't even attempt to stop and then make the turn, which still would have been illegal) and literally almost hit me, she came close enough that my chest and shoulders hit the left side windows in the back as i tried to lean back, but was off balance so I fell in.
She stopped and started coming at me and screaming at me as if me, the pedestrian, with a perfectly legit walk signal was at fault.
Finally some "big" bystanders came thru and pushed her back to her car... others were calling the police...
she did all of this on a very busy intersection in the West Village with hundreds of people watching... what the hell is wrong with people?
Effing A-holes!
The problem started with women having the right to vote.
A red Chevy Avalanche, huh?
You would think with the San Genaro feast detail the cops would of caught the guy.
^^^ get real ^^^
Walked thru San Genaro last night. Cops were all clustered together near each street intersection - from 6 to a dozen cops standing together, chatting, smoking, laughing. Probably some of the easiest detail these guys get each year.
that's true, one cop I saw was so bored he was reading what was on a can of energy drink from abroad. and, it was mostly shop talk.
Yet another scumbag in an SUV taken off the road, hopefully for good. Why is it that SUV's attract so many scumbags?
Did Dunken Dougnuts have a stand nearby, or a featured tent at the festival? Talk about a cash cow with all those cops around.
