On the Plate: Upcoming Food and Wine Events

pickles.JPGSeptember 15 & 16: Party at the Red Hook Ballfields
Celebrate the extension of the vendors' permit through the end of their season in October and add on extra festivities for Mexican and Central American Independence Day. Caesar Fuentes, the organizing force behind the vendors, promises that "the food vendors committee will host a livelier than usual weekend event - more soccer games, pinatas, music, and a 2 day art exhibit featuring photographs taken by the food vendors." Sounds good to us.

September 16: International Pickle Day
It's pickles, pickles, and more pickles at the 7th annual festival on the Lower East Side dedicated to all things pickled. Co-sponsored by the Lower East Side Business Improvement District and the NY Food Museum, this free multi-cultural event features pickles from around the world, sharing culinary practice, home canning tips, exhibitions, great music and tasty treats, including an abundance of free pickle samples from the likes of Wheelhouse, Rick's Picks and many more. 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side.

Appetizers offered include; Cornbread with Ancho Honey Butter, Kruez Regular and Jalapeno Sausage, Smokey Chipotle Devilled Eggs. Dishes being served at dinner include, Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket (Moist & Lean), Market Chicken. Sides are the most important compliment to BBQ and next week, Longhorn Cheddar Mac & Cheese, Campfire Baked Beans with Burnt Ends, and Cool as Cucumber Salad will be featured. The dessert will be PB & J Cupcakes. 6:00PM – 8:00PM. Tickets are available online at www.4foodiesusa.com for $50/person.

Taste dishes featuring greenmarket fresh produce from local restaurants including Fleur de Sel, Strip House, Tocqueville, Union Square Cafe and many more, while sipping on wines from New York State and around the globe, and New York microbrews. General Admission $115; Day of Event $125. Tickets available online. 7:30 - 9 pm., 17th Street and Union Square West.

September 20: Il Buco "Sagra del Maiale"
il Buco will celebrate its 13th anniversary while hosting its fourth annual "Sagra del Maiale", an outdoor commemorating the Autumn Equinox and celebrating all things pig-related.
