Two groups of teenagers on an northbound 1 train got into a fight that ended up with two teen slashed. The fight started around the 59th Street/Columbus Circle stop or the 96th Street stop, and then it spilled out onto the platform at 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway. Two were slashed with a knife and another teen was beaten with a cane; all were treated at St. Luke's Roosevelt. A witness told WABC 7, "I was in my car and I heard screaming ... from downstairs ... bunch of boys ran out and then this other guy ran up."
The stop is a few blocks south of Columbia University and the area is usually very busy. SubwayBlogger was on a 1 train while police were investigating at 110th: "The place was crawling with NYPD and rescue." And Newsday reported one resident as saying, "This is a grassroots problem. Anybody who rides the rails knows that the kids are a real menace."
The 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway station is no stranger to violence. In July of last year, a man took two construction workers' saws and "sliced open" the chest of a 64-year-old postal worker. The attacker, Tareyton Williams, was sentenced to 18 years in prison; his victim, Michael Steinberg, forgave him but doesn't forgive the MTA for allowing this to happen.

Yeah, I ride the 1 train, and have always assumed that all the trains are crowded with kids at that hour of the day. Is it just the 1?
I avoid the 1 at the kid-rush hour. They're awful to ride with. I wish they'd have more cops on the train during those hours, to keep them a little more orderly -- they tend to overcrowd the train, thinking it's funny to pack themselves in, screaming and laughing. Which isn't exactly a pleasure for people coming home from work tired and frazzled.

I take the train with these kids several days a week for the past 2 years and I have never felt nervous around them. Actually, I often hear then talking about school, their classes and their families. Sure they are loud, and show the average adolescent rudeness they are no different than any other neighborhood high school student. Which is to say they are not saints but they are not homicidal "ghetto trash" like some other careless commenters put it.

Most teenagers are loud and annoying no matter where they are - regardless of race or color.
And not all ghetto kids are violent. But, growing up in violent surrounding, where their peers are involved in crime - you can hardly blame them. Until our government starts taking care of American ghettos, things like this will keep happening.

It's true that in this city, black and latino teenagers are more annoying on the subways. But, I think that part of that has to do with black and latino teenagers riding the subways more than white and asian teenagers.
But, leave this city and go to a more suburban area, and it's gonna be the white teenagers who you notice to be more annoying.
taking the 7 train is usually filled with Asian kids, their behavior is not even close to the kids on the 1 train

case in point, senior year when everyone has their yearbook in hand. I've even seen this young orthodox jew couple acting all lovey dovey. Teens in groups are indeed loud and annoying. City teens more so. City teens from tough/poor neighborhoods are more intimidating, because of how tough they feel they need to appear, in order to survive in their neighborhoods without getting a beatdown every day for being soft. 99% of them are utterly harmless, and yes, it's tough to tell which ones are truly thugs when all are wearing protective coloring.
The poorest parts of modern american cities tend to be filled with blacks and latinos. 100 years ago it was italians or irish. 100 years from now it may be swedes, and we'll be reading about how violent those damned lutefisk-eaters are.

All the kids have to do is go to school and be good. Maybe if they were forced to wear uniforms? Mandatory community service for graduation? Increased after school programs? The kids today need to be more involved with their schools and communities.

I don't know about the rest of you- but after 8 -12hrs. of time consuming/ boring meetings, useless conf. calls, dealing with superior attitudes, backstabbing, being excessively mindful of your speech/ behavior/ dress/ ect.

But you have to make an anti-asian or anti-jewish comment for that to happen. Gothamist happily allows racist comments, unless they are directed at asians or jews, then the comments promptly get deleted. That IP address then gets blocked.
I wonder if anyone notices Gothamist's strange obsession with blacks and hispanics? I've calculated almost 60% of their articles are about blacks or hispanics, and usually not in a good light.

Truth is the vast majority of white people in this country have never been appreciative of the efforts of others to enhance or maintain the lives they enjoy. Blacks, Hispanics, nor Native Americans! As a matter of fact, they seem to truly beleive that everyone else is on this earth soley for their benefit.
They have collectively stolen, raped, sabotaged, fill in the blank, even killed!- soley to benefit themselves. Then have the nerve to become annoyed, even angry when a small group of these people appear to return their tactics.
