HIV Diagnoses Rising Among Young Gay Men

2007_09_dohchart.gifThe Health Department released preliminary data that shows HIV infections increasing among gay men under age 30.

Specifically, for men-who-have-sex- with-other-men (MSM) under 30, HIV cases have increased by 33% and account for 44% of all new diagnoses (in 2001, they accounted for 31% of all new cases). The number of older MSM with new diagnoses of HIV is declining, but the number of new HIV cases for MSM between ages 13 and 19 has doubled. Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden expressed his concern, "We’re headed in the wrong direction. Unless young men reduce the number of partners they have, and protect themselves and their partners by using condoms more consistently, we will face another wave of suffering and death from HIV and AIDS.”

Other facts from the Health Department:

  • Blacks and Hispanics still bear a disproportionate share of New York City’s HIV burden. Among all MSM, blacks received twice as many HIV diagnoses as whites in 2006 (232 versus 101), and Hispanics received 55% more than whites (157 versus 101). The disparity is even more striking among adolescents; more than 90% of the MSM under age 20 diagnosed with HIV in 2006 were black or Hispanic (81 out of 87).
  • Every borough except Staten Island has seen HIV increase among MSM under 30 since 2001. The largest increases occurred in Queens (49%) and Manhattan (57%). The increase in Manhattan was concentrated in East and Central Harlem (up 115%, from 26 to 56), and in the Chelsea and Clinton areas (up 56%, from 25 to 39).
The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS president Debra Frasier-Howe said, "These numbers are devastating. After 26 years of AIDS, we cannot drift backward. We must ask all New Yorkers to accept some responsibility for helping our young people protect themselves. Their lives are not dispensable.”

The Health Department offers free HIV testing at 10 STD clinics and has been distributing free NYC Condoms. More information about the new data and HIV testing here.

i'll be the first to say it. After everything we know, and after all this time ... if you're still getting the HIV, you're an idiot. Take responsibility.

It makes warped sense. They didn't come of age in the aftermath of the first wave in the 80's and they don't know how bad AIDS really is so they are not being careful. They think if anything AIDS is a chronic disease that they can live with. It's absolutely tragic.

i love all the gazillions of dollars spent on aids research and education and horny ass gay dudes always fuck it up. you know all those billboards about babies and heterosexuals who can get aids too? that's just propaganda. Heteros and babies have like a .00008% of getting AIDS. Everytime you give money to AIDS research it goes to fund the asslicking ecstacy addled faggots who stick their dicks into anuses full of shit. many anuses full of shit actually. gay men are much more promiscuous and unprotected then any demographic. A gay man may have as much as ten partners a week. Lesson: AIDS only affects selfish gay bastards

Stop making apologies for these people MT. I agree with you that they think AIDS is a chronic illness but I don't believe for a minute they haven't been told over and over that the virus mutates to become drug resistent and that in any event infection means a shortened lifespan. And if AIDS doesn't scare them, hepatitis should.

J. Cheung,

You should report a bit more responsibly and tell what is happening in the world. From what I've heard AIDS is out of control in Asia and still Africa, not to mention places like Brazil where so many Westerners are on the down low. Don't give us this tunnel vision regarding minorities in NYC. Go global or not at all.

# 6 - I don't think MT was making excuses but rather pointing out the warped logic that some of these young men may have.

# 4 - You're a tool. Have some guts and sign in with your real name and say that ignorant shit. Moron.

OK, the NYC Dep't of Health makes condoms available to everyone for free. What else would you like all New Yorkers to do? That's a great job of sounding profound while saying nothing.

although this report is somewhat discouraging, there is a brighter side that should be taken into consideration, which is that these are cases that have been reported, allowing for the possibility that greater pressure to be aware has resulted in broader testing. this could mean that the number of unreported/unrealized cases of HIV have actually decreased. of course, knowing if this is true or if it's completely unrealistic is nearly impossible.

My love note to Guest [4]:

i love all the gazillions of dollars spent on research and education and yet a bigoted guest commenter always fuck it up. you know all those people with actual sign-ins can have guts too? they must just be propaganda. Commentor's with actual sign-ins have like a .00008% of being a bigot. Everytime you give money to blogs like Gothamist it goes to fund the education of people who care about their community and people within it.

My favorite part of your rant - "many anuses full of shit actually." eloquent

attention gay people: stop doing meth!

This is absolutely horrible, but unfortunately one look at craigslist or online dating/hookup sites could have precluded ever needing a study. Hell, anyone who went to Roxy on Saturday nights knew this for a fact as well.

I just hope this is a momentary blip sort of thing and people starting using their heads again when it comes to sex.

number 4 is absolutely right, regardless of whatever they choose to sign in with.

stop spending billion on an ACQUIRED disease.

Ya, #7, I think you're on the wrong site. You need to be on Globoist not Gothamist. I know they both look/sound similar, but really they're not. Honest Injian.

AIDS is terrible, but black people with AIDS are worse.

Jen shows her jungle fever once again.

The numbers for blacks or hispanics makes sense, since the majority of young people in NYC are black or hispanic.

I wonder why Jen does post the number of Asian AIDS patient diagnosis. The NYC website also has that cohort.

If she did, she would see overall Asian AIDS cases risen over 57%, and over 119% for those over 30.

The numbers for young Asians are not accurate, because my experience with young asian twinks are that we stay DEEEEP in the closet, and usually don't come out until the 30s... after our mommies finally accept the fact we'll never marry "a nice chinese girl".

People like Jen are dangerous because the research dollars needed to help epidemics in the Asian community, like hepatitis (almost 25% of foreign born Asians in NYC are hepatitis positive, which will lead to cirrosis of the liver if not treated early) and potential epidemics like AIDS never reach the Asian communitie. This is because the general population doesn't believe Asians need the help.

P.S.
Anyone up to calculating the percentage of Jen Chung articles dedicated to blacks? Me thinks she desires the black rod. ha ha ha.

At the same time, teenage pregnancies are down. Teenage girls are having less abortions, too. Maybe the problem in the gay community is gays do not say no enough times (although, one screw up is enough). Teen girls KNOW unprotected sex is going to screw up their lives, no matter what HE says.
Smart girls or better incentives?
