There's No "D" in Dallas

2007_09_sgiantscowboys.jpgThis was the Eli Manning we have been waiting for. With Brandon Jacobs hurt and the Giants down 17-6, Eli took his team onto his shoulders and proved that he can play quarterback at an elite level. The only problem is that he couldn’t play defense.

The fact that the Giants lost is not shocking, it’s tough to win in Dallas. The fact that they lost by giving up 45 points is astounding. Yes, Osi Umenyiora got hurt in the first half and yes, Michael Strahan wasn’t in game shape, but that doesn’t excuse the secondary. Tony Romo averaged 23 yards per completion and that was without Terry Glenn to throw to. The Cowboys added 142 rushing yards as they sliced through the New York defense at will.

While the defensive woes are going to be a major problem, it looks like the injury bug that plagued the Giants last season is back again. Osi Umenyiora and Brandon Jacobs both have knee injuries. Kevin Dockery hurt his ankle and worst of all, Eli Manning has a bruised shoulder. Losing Umenyiora or Jacobs for a stretch would be very bad, losing Eli would be devastating. The “hefty lefty” is a great nickname, but Jared Lorenzen doesn’t appear to be much of a backup quarterback. The Giants will have to hope that Manning is a quick healer.

I'm still keeping the faith.

Good. The Giants will tank and finally Run Tom Coughlin out of town. Thank God.

Btw, Lorenzen's better nickname is "The Pillsbury Throwboy"

The "Pillsburry Throw-Boy" is a lot better and tougher than people give him credit for.

That being said: the Giant's secondary is dismal, the depth chart is shallow, they have no proper running game (or a proper fullback) and the ring leader (Coughlin) just looks confused on the sidelines.

Tom Coughlin is done.

If Ely Manning keeps putting up these numbers, he will save his job. But I'd rather see the Giants have a strong defense.

confusion is a look that's all too common for the giants. coughlin and manning both. i think eli should try to trademark his look of confusion though.

The Giants have the worst secondary in all of football. And sadly, it's been that way for a while. It needs fixing more than anything else.

One thing I don't get - in the 4th quarter on a 4th down run, Lorenzen SLID, and came up 1 yard short. The guy coming at him was a cornerback, must have been 50lbs lighter! For god's sake, if you're built like a (big) fullback, why not play like one!

Other than a 4th and 1 where they need to move the pile, I hope I never have to see Lorenzen in a regular season game again.

no one can criticize manning's performance last night. he was accurate throughout the game (even after hurting his shoulder), and the interception he threw was 100% not his fault (plaxico slipped and fell). every time the giants fell behind, eli brought them back with some excellent passing.

That being said, the g-men will not win many games this year if their defense can only make 2 stops per game.

"i think eli should try to trademark his look of confusion though."

Eli looked confused to you? Not many confused QB's throw 4 TD's.

Eli gets so much shit that he doesn't deserve.

HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!

Hey Cowboys fan - you aren't winning a thing with that defense.

#10 - the confused look he always has when something bad happens.

Hey #12, I've got one thing to say to that: Cowboys 45 - Giants 35.

Tom Coughlin is done.

If Ely Manning keeps putting up these numbers, he will save his job. But I'd rather see the Giants have a strong defense.

"Save his Job?"

You should check when Eli's season went south last year. I'll give you a hint: when the left side of a right-handed quarterback's offensive line stops blocking (point: all the starters get hurt and inexperienced back-ups are in the positiion), quarterbacks get a little jumpy about getting murdered by a hit they can't see coming.

Anyone who thinks Eli's a bad quarterback when he has a competent offensive line protection either 1) pays way too much attention to what the media is telling them or 2) is an idiot. They went 6-2 last season before Luke Petitgout got hurt and 2-6 after. Think about it.

And, news for you, there aren't any better coaches out there unless Parcells decides to coach the team... Cowher's going to Cleveland.
