Unfortunately, what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Last night MTV took over the Strip and filled it with up and comers, the standard rock, rollers and rappers and of course...the token has beens.

Last week The New York Times reported on some problems at the network over the past few years.
For one thing, critics say the Video Music Awards, intended as a raucous counterpoint to more staid ceremonies, has become stale itself; the show has endured a four-year ratings slump, including a 28 percent drop last year.To redeem themselves they gave the VMA's a makeover. The show was brought to Vegas last night and instead of the performances all being in one space, they were spread out throughout the hotels. A website called "You R Here" was set up for instant reports via MTV and fans. Interactive, flashy and fast-moving it was...but Justin Timberlake said it best in his acceptance speech by simply stating, "I want to challenge MTV right now to play more videos!" Only to be followed by his next acceptance speech in which he received his award from the girls of reality show The Hills, then declared that no one wants to see reality shows on a music network. Oh yes he did!Another issue is the channel’s slow response to the explosion of video and social networking online. Music fans are regularly watching music videos on its Web site, mtv.com, which drew about 8.5 million visitors in July. But Yahoo’s music service, which has long showcased videos, attracted 23 million, and MySpace’s music site drew more than 21 million.
JT's ex and the other makeover challenge of the night, Britney Spears, opened the show with a tired performance. The song, the dance and the energy level were at an all time low -- and according to The Daily News, Brit was warned beforehand to rehearse, relax and stay out of trouble.
"Britney knows she's on thin ice. When they agreed to the performance, they sat her down and told her she should not be going out, and instead focus on rehearsing and resting," an insider said. "She seemed to be thankful and appreciative for the chance, but who knows with her? MTV made it clear that her usual behavior will not be tolerated."
The best part of the night? The two previous Mr. Pamela Anderson's got in a brawl. We're guessing Kid rock (after failing earlier this year) tried to punch Tommy Lee in the face. We think next year MTV should stick to their hometown and spread the performances throughout the five boroughs. Britney at McCarren Park Pool, Beyonce on the Brooklyn Bridge, and all brawls over broads settled by a breakdance-off underground in the subways. Too bad Kanye won't be there though.

street skank.
Britney is the new Mike Tyson. People tune in to watch a train wreck of an event.
The full weight of crap is falling in on itself. Is TV dying out? We can only hope.
I think Beck said it best..MTV makes me wanna smoke crack.
Isn't false advertising to call it "Music" Awards
what the fuck? she could never sing before. She was just a good monkey and followed choreography from black gay guys really good. Now she can't dance and her body is far from her 2000 days. So she's just like every other stripper in vegas now.
MTV should just die altogether.
Or, maybe the next awards show, they can have a real celebrity death match, last one alive wins the award!
It's a sad state of affairs when you're dancer look like models compared to you and you are mocked for what you used to be able to do best. Sing along and repeat dance routines, Britney you need to go back to rehab, or god sakes atleast put some clothes on you're giving white trash a bad name.
she should have said that she had diarrhea.
Poor Britney. I just couldn't decide whether it was funny or sad watching her performance. Funny? Sad???
I made this online comic to make the whole situation more funny:

Still, sort of sad though.
When is she going to overdose on pills or drive off an embankment..? : (
Please die already..
"Gothamist is a website about New York"
She just looked really scared and confused.
The whole show was weird...it felt really disconnected.
But I loved Chris Brown's routine.
MTV is shit and has been for at least a decade. More lights and more pop stars are not going to save it.
Britney is just Southern white trash and she was never that good looking or talented, unless you like white trash skanks.
Now MTV, when was the last time you ever showed a music video?
Sarah Silverman bombed harder than Britney Spears.
I give it 10 days before she overdoses.
It was like watching Anna Nicole doing a live performance, y'all!
Um..retire.
I think I heard four different vocalists on that recording. None of them Brit.
yay, Justin! i'm not really a fan of his, but i very much appreciate him calling MTV on no longer living up to their name.
Kid Rock decks Tommy Lee. I love it, at last some rock n' roll.
I kept it on in the background hoping to catch a couple good performances. Alicia Keys was the only one who impressed me. It just made me realize how little raw talent exists in pop music anymore.
southern trash
Britney should go from brain-dead pop fool, to being a pole dancer at some loser club in Vegas. It's all over, but she could dance and lip-sync for drinks.
That figure reminds me of a swayback horse.
Huh?
Justin Timberlake helped kill MTV himself by ushering in the era of plastic LIP-N'SYNC junk - then making it worse by bringing in those BET 'urban music' thugs who only seek to defend their bank accounts.
Anyone who's ever known an employee at the Viacom building in Times Square the last 5 years knows very well that MTV is no longer a conceiver and fashioner of cutting-edge entertainment.
Venture capitalists, lets get a move on...
Damn. Is she turning into a wide-load or what? Motherhood hasn't been good to her.
the VMAs were a joke.
the producer should be fired.
what's up with both Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson showing up with magicians? Are they the new celebrity-trash accessory or are they using their magic powers to infiltrate the exclusive club of the famously washed-up and/or talentless?
