Mayor Bloomberg said that he has no intention of calling off tomorrow's 22nd Annual United American Muslim Day Parade, despite a barrage of calls, emails, and letters asking him to do just that. Opponents of the parade, which will run down Madison Ave. from 41st St. to 27th St., say that it is a threat to national security and an insult considering that it is only two days before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Bloomberg stressed that it would be a "terrible mistake" to implicate a whole group of people for the acts of a few and that Muslims were a vital part of New York. Organizers of the parade said that the protestors were more likely to swell the attendance of the parade as anti-parade sentiments were unifying Muslims around the region.
One of the websites that is protesting the parade and wants the city to revoke its permit is Americans Against Hate. It's leader, Joe Kaufman, says that the parade's organizers are Islamist radicals and that security for the parade should be beefed up due to the extreme threat they pose. Kaufman, who lives in Coral Springs, FL according to amNewYork, will be holding a protest rally a block from the end of Sunday's parade at Madison and 26th St.

The parade has been held for the past 22 years. Why are people only now claiming it's a security "threat?"
I hate all the goddam parades. The only annual parade should be Thanksgiving. That's it. Get rid of all the rest of them, please.

Everyone needs to grow up and stop being such scaremongers. And if, god forbid, something does happen, it's probably not going to happen because of the Muslims, but rather because of idiots. In which case, we should stand behind the Muslims' right to conduct a parade just like the rest of us (you know, like the Italians, the Dominicans, the Irish, the Gays, etc., etc.). Not to mention the right to be protected from idiots.

There may not even be much resemblance. The 9/11 attackers were Arabs, while Muslim in the United States are predominately South Asian.

What is the criterion for organizing a parade? We have parades that are ethnic holidays (St. Patrick's Day - not strictly Irish, since it excludes Irish gays), ethnic pride-stirring American holidays (Columbus Day), geographic pan-ethnic themes (West Indian Day Parade), lifestyle/gender identity (Gay Pride). What is "Muslim Day?" I am not being critical. I'm actually just curious.

Disliking somone because of the religion they're BORN INTO is wrong, just like disliking them because of the race, ethnicity, skin color, etc that they're born into. People can't control, and aren't responsible for, how they're born.
But they ARE responsible for the beliefs and culture that they CHOOSE, as adults, to live by. When someone chooses to follow a belief system that opposes the basic principles of my culture, why am I required to "like" them?
