Raccoon Attack in Prospect Park!

2007_09_bkraccoonn.jpgAs Park Slopers discuss the elementary school pigeon killers lurking about Prospect Park, the animals decide to strike back!

The NY Post reports that "a masked marauder" was on a rampage yesterday in the Park as he took a bite out of a woman who was on an outing with her family at The Lake.

The animal had been lurking unusually close to people when it struck, sinking its teeth into the woman's thigh. Her husband managed to pull it off and then it fled.
The Parks Commissioner says it's likely the raccoon just got hungry! The NYPD later caught the little guy, who was not rabid but later euthanized. Here are some tips about dealing with the raccoons in Brooklyn, which are described by the Parks Commissioner as "tough New York City raccoons."

#14, if you see a raccoon that has "rabbis" in daylight hours, you're probably in Williamsburg rather than Prospect Park.

Seeing a raccoon out in daylight hours means that it probably has rabbis. So, why would the family just stand around? common sense people.

I bet the woman deserved it. The raccoons hate the self-righteous Park Slope moms just as much as the rest of the city's residents...

They're all over New York City. I saw one sauntering down Central Park South a few months back, completely fearless. Later on, it took a break near some of the carriage horses. Tourists stopped to gasp and gawk and snap pictures. It just stood there, totally unphased by any of it. It was also very big. The City with all its garbage must be paradise to them.

This morning as I was leaving for work I noticed a dead raccoon in the middle of 10th street between Prospect Park West and 8th ave. Could this be the beginnings of an invasion?

    Poor raccoon... RIP

The raccoon was euthanized so it COULD be tested for rabies. not the other way around. You need brain tissue for the test.

Deserve? I would have left its bleeding head on a 3ft pike in the Nethermead, birds eating out its eyes, as a warning to other raccoons.

"...who was not rabid but later euthanized"

So this is what we do in these situations. Its not like the animal has a TASTE FOR HUMAN FLESH!!!

    The Raccoon didn't deserve that....

How the hell did they get through Queens?

Now they're in Midwood which has a fair amount of greenery but hardly bucolic.
