MUJI Announces NYC Location in SoHo

2007_03_mujiprod.jpg

Remember this March when we told you about MUJI opening up a location in the new New York Times building? Well apparently that location is delayed, because Japanese retailer MUJI is telling us that their first United States location will be at 455 Broadway in SoHo. The new space will be about 3,200 square feet and will open in November.

People that are unhappy with just shopping for their plain-looking products at their MoMA store locations can rejoice. The new location will carry over 2,000 items including around 570 stationery items, 40 types of furniture, 590 housewares items, 30 electric appliances, and 330 apparel items amongst other things.

MUJI, which was originally known as Mujirushi Ryohin, means "no brand quality goods."

None too soon. I was running low of imported crap.

Do you mean "stationery"?

You will be able to buy stuff, but you won't be able to take it with you because it's "Stationary"...

I hope they bring the cool, only-in-Japan stuff....

yes. stationery, thanks. though it won't be moving much while waiting to be purchased.

it won't be moving much while waiting to be purchased.

Unless it's one of those creepy Japanese robot children.

Went to the MUJI store in Barcelona. They have a lot of quality inexpensive goods. Yes, it's just more useless crap to purchase, but at least (unless the have significantly raised the prices) you wont break the bank when you shop there.

Muji or Target ot KMart? MUJI!! Yea! Great design, good prices.

lets define "inexpensive" here folks...ikea inexpensive?

It seems they hire famous designers (at least famous in Japan), but they don't say who designed what...

Love MUJI.
Not for the average person, but it will surely make happy many visitors and locals in NYC

why would i need this when I get the same crap from the Moma store and Marchand legumes? It's just a gimmick. Instead of a calculator that you can buy in a dollar store you can get a calculator designed by some faggot european guy and pay 200 bucks for it. genius!!!

the worst thing is the electronic automated handsoap dispenser which costs 100 bucks. I just can't believe that people are so lazy they can't press down on a soap dispenser lever that they'll pay such a enormous price for a minor convenience.

About 10 years ago I stumbled on the Muji store in London. I LOVE it!! Inexpensive, well-designed and fun (both the store and and the products). I'm still wearing shirts and using the good-looking "generic" products like pens, file caddies and hand towels I've bought there over several visits (the last one about 7 years ago). Prices at least then were similar to Ikea (furnishings), Target (clothing) or Container Store (stationery/office supplies). And poster #16, keep your homophobic slurs to yourself. If you don't like things that look/feel/work good, then just be happy with Wal-Mart and shut up.

Muji does not stand behind it's so called design. Try to return something - and you'll find that once they have your money they could care less. What they are peddling is Ikea at 5 times the price. Muji is the Japanese Walmart.
