"New Meadowlands" to Change Colors...Like Chameleon

2007_09_meadowlands1.jpg

2007_09_meadowlands2.jpg

Our neighbors to the west broke ground today on a new stadium for the Giants and Jets at the Meadowlands. Rather, officials officially broke ground today, since it's obvious to anyone that's been to the Meadowlands that construction on the new two-team stadium has already started. The $1.3 billion stadium will be jointly owned by the two teams and make both feel at home, unlike Giants Stadium, which irritates the Jets and their fans.

Architects for the new stadium have designed features that will accommodate both teams. Move over China, because the yet-to-be-named stadium (they're looking for a sponsor) will have its own "Great Wall," with 400' long by 40' high panels that will feature either the Giants or Jets logos. The stadium, which will seat 82,500 and is scheduled to open for the 2010 season, will also feature an outer skin of aluminum louvers which may change colors depending on the team as well. Interior lighting is already designed to change colors based on the stadium's home team.

With the stadium construction boom for all the local professional sports teams, we're surprised that the Jets and Giants didn't come away with a stadium each. Of course, the reason for that could be the whole West Side Stadium/NYC 2012 debacle. Stadiums are nearly finished/under construction/planned for nearly every local team. The Devils start their season this October in Newark, the Red Bulls are building in Harrison, NJ, the Yankees and Mets both have new stadiums underway, and the Nets have a planned stadium in Brooklyn. If Moynihan Station is ever built, it's possible that there will be a new MSG for the Knicks and Rangers as well.

Note the nice Auto and Telecom ads in the interior of the new stadium rendering

The Jets have fans?

Huh, who knew.

Rangers need a new arena...motherfuck the knicks

If the old Giants Stadium is demolished, will they find Jimmy Hoffa's skeleton under the 50-yard line?

Do people go there? I've never been there, not even for concerts!

"$1.3 billion stadium will be jointly owned by the two teams"

How much public money is being used for this project? I can't believe the tax payers aren't subsidizing this circus/future execution ground in some manner.

#5 - i don't think any public money is going directly to the football stadium. each team has $650 million in private financing (from AP article: CitiCorp is financing the Jets' portion, while investment banks Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers are financing the Giants' deal.) and the teams have a $300 million construction loan from the nfl.

i believe public money will go to other improvements around the area though (highway, etc).

Will the Meadowlands become easily accessible for New Yorkers? Nah.

I say forget about these teams if they want to have the NY name but don't want to play in the state. The only NFL team playing in NY are the Buffalo Bills.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the "public" money will come from PSL sales. Neither team has said a definitive no to them and it seems like an easy way to recoup costs. I hope I am wrong.

I like that. They should make it change colors depending on what's going on inside. Every time Eli Manning overthrows an open receiver, the colors can darken and sulk. It'll be the world's first mood stadium.

What no fucking roof! Well we really didn't want the super bowl played here anyway.

How many more years can the Jets continue to be the Giants' bitches! Jets, please get your own stadium, no other NFL team is in the same situation.

fugly

The color changing reminds me of Allianz Arena. More importantly, who's going to sponsor the stadium?

And seriously, it took them until now to finally put in a train station?
