Last Night's Action: Sweep Dreams!

  • Mets 3 Braves 2: Some people may question Willie Randolph’s managing, but they had better give him credit for this weekend. After a dismal sweep at the hands of the Phillies, the Mets responded in a huge way, sweeping their archrival in Atlanta.

Tom Glavine contributed at both ends, driving in the first run of the game and allowing only one run in six innings. David Wright added his 25th home run of the year, driving in Jose Reyes.

The only downer in the game was another shaky performance by Billy Wagner, but with the division lead back to four and Pedro returning tomorrow against the Reds, things look pretty good for the Mets.

  • Tampa Bay 8 Yankees 2: Yes, Seattle lost and yes, the chances of winning the division were tiny anyway, but the Yankees simply cannot lose a series to Tampa in September. Just as they did Friday, the bats disappeared and when Andy Pettitte struggled in the seventh, the game was essentially over. Now the Yankees have to regroup and face the Mariners who come in on a nine-game losing streak.
  • Brooklyn and Staten Island Spilt: Mike Antonini, Brad Rustich and Eddie Kunz combined to shut out Staten Island as the Cyclones won game one of their doubleheader 3-0 clinching a playoff spot.

In the nightcap the Baby Bombers got revenge with their own shutout 6-0 behind the pitching of Heyer, Kiley and Peterson.

  • The Williams Sisters Advance: Serena Williams won 6-3, 6-4 and Venus won 6-4, 6-2, as both advanced to the quarterfinals. Rafael Nadal also advanced easily 7-6, 6-2, 6-1.
