Last Night's Action: Welcome to the Bigs
- Yankees 9, Devil Rays 6: Mike Mussina might want to worry now. Ian Kennedy threw seven innings of three-run ball -- though only one run was earned -- as the Yankees evened their series against the Devil Rays. Mussina might start if Roger Clemens is unable to go Monday, but the rookie Kennedy probably earned himself a few more starts with this one. Alex Rodriguez found himself at the center of everything today. He hit a first-inning home run, made the error that led to the two unearned runs, then had his bat confiscated. That only happened because Joe Torre had the umpires look at Tampa Bay's Akinori Iwamura's bat earlier. With the win and Seattle's loss, the Yankees suddenly lead the wild-card race by two games.
- Mets 5, Braves 1: What house of horrors? Mike Pelfrey of all people pitched the Mets to their second straight victory at Turner Field, and everyone knows how much the Mets love playing there. These wins have been welcomed by the Mets, who can sweep the series Sunday when Tom Glavine faces his old pal John Smoltz.
- Agnieszka Radwanska scored the biggest upset of this year's U.S. Open when she took out Maria Sharapova in three sets. Sharapova, who had a wide-open path to the final, can now look back on a disappointing year in the grand slams. Andy Roddick demolished Thomas Johansson before Roger Federer overcame a first-set hiccup against NCAA runner-up John Isner; Roddick and Federer remain on course for a Wednesday-night quarterfinal. And James Blake (pictured) defeated Stefan Koubek in a match that didn't end until after 1AM; he told the crowd, "There are a million things to do on a Saturday night in New York, so for you guys to stay out here until 1 a.m. really means a lot to me."
- Red Bulls 1, Fire 0: Juan Pablo Angel scored in the 75th minute as New York snapped a two-game losing streak.
