City Cuts Sales Tax For Clothing, Shoes Over $110

If there's ever a time for some fall shopping, it's now, as the city's portion of tax on clothing and shoes is officially eliminated effective today.

Mayor Bloomberg announced the removal of the 4% tax during his State of the City speech in January. Consumers will still have to pay the 4.375% state sales tax for clothing and shoes over $110 (fun fact: 0.375% is supposed to go to the MTA, but we're pretty sure it ends up in a general fund). And items under $110 are still totally tax free. Previously, the sales tax exemption for items under $110 was only offered during certain weeks, as a way to encourage New Yorkers to buy more.
