EVENT: The American Opera Project has taken on...baseball? Tonight they present Baseball Through The Eye of the Artist. You'll catch some scenes from Daniel Sonenberg's opera-under-development The Summer King. And stick around for Bang The Drum Slowly, "the acclaimed 1973 baseball film that marked the beginning of Robert DeNiro's illustrious film career."
Dusk // Fort Green Park Conservancy [Washington Park St, Brooklyn] // Free
THEATER: Tonight the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theater trundles through the Upper East Side with their little wooden friends to enchant (and frighten?) children of all ages. Their production of Dr. Faust “offers the Czech marionette classic in what is as close to its original as you can get on these shores. The staging incorporates age-old technical tricks, fire and thunder, hellish gargoyles and underwater creatures.” Gargoyles? Hell yes! - John Del Signore
8pm // Bohemian Hall [321 E 73rd St] // Ticket prices vary.
ART: The Artist meets the Computer tonight at MoMA. The exhibit is a high-tech presentation of a series of videos "produced by young contemporary artists working with computers, digital technology, and the machine as part of their artistic practice." Artists include Pierre Huyghe, Cory Arcangel and Frankie Martin, Seth Price, Daria Martin, Mark Leckey, Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, Paper Rad, Michael Bell-Smith, Lars Laumann, and Takeshi Murata. We hear Smith's video involves R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet". More info here.
8:30pm // MoMA [11 W 53rd St] // $10
MUSIC: VHS or Beta is the retro-named band that (to be honest) we hadn't heard much from lately and sort of thought they went the way of their namesakes. Tonight they're in town to play a free show -- promising old and new hits.
9pm // Studio B [259 Banker St, Greenpoint] // Free with RSVP at going.com/vhsorbeta
Going even further back into the past...The Meat Puppets are at Knitting Factory tonight (ending a two-night run). We just caught these guys at SXSW earlier this year and soaked up ever drop of Backwater...heh. We suggest you check them out...tickets are still on sale!
