Last Night's Action: Keep Your Hands to Yourself

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Phillies 3, Mets 2: With Shawn Green's weak ground ball to shortstop, the Mets appeared ready to tie the game. With runners on first and third and one out in the ninth, Endy Chavez jogged home as the tying run. But Marlon Anderson, who was on first, blatantly -- and unnecessarily -- pushed Tadahito Iguchi with two hands. Umpire C.B. Bucknor called interference and the automatic double play, ending the game.

Thanks in part to to Anderson's stupidity, this series has gone as bad as possible for Mets. They've lost the first three games and now lead the division by only three. They've wasted strong starting pitching performances the last two nights. Good news? Orlando Hernandez faces Kyle Lohse Thursday.

  • Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: Too bad the Yankees stunk up the joint in Anaheim and Detroit last week. They've won the first two games of this series with Boston and now trail the Red Sox by six games. Even if they complete the sweep Thursday, they'll be down five games. If they lose, it'll be back to seven, so they shouldn't entertain any delusions of winning the division. Roger Clemens took a no-hitter into the sixth. Kyle Farnsworth returned to his evil form but was bailed out by Mariano Rivera. Chien-Ming Wang faces Curt Schilling in the finale.
  • Staten Island 14, Aberdeen 4: Donald Hollingsworth stole the show until he got pulled from the game. He had two hits, two runs and an RBI before being pinch hit for.

  • Hudson Valley 2, Brooklyn 1: All the scoring happened in the first. That means the Cyclones held a lead, but only briefly.
  • Roger Federer wore all black and cruised into the third round at the U.S. Open, beating Chilean qualifier Paul Capdeville. He'll draw American John Isner in the third round Saturday. Serena Williams also won in the night session. During the day, Federer's foil, Rafael Nadal, struggled with a knee injury but still beat Australian wild card Alun Jones. That doesn't bode well for his chances.

Tom,

You don't have to give the mets more coverage if they LOSE!

Strike a balance, yo!

Clemens took a no-hitter into the sixth (granted he walked five and hit a batter). Try doing that when YOU are 45. Farnsworth was the bullpen dog of the night. Mariano got the last four, including fielding three grounders himself. Shades of his former brilliance. Today, the Wang/Joba show.

#1 you are an idiot to expect fair and balance report from Gothamist on anything. Bring on the football season already, I am tired of the steriod freaks.

BOSTON SUCKS !!

What a bunch of pussys

Watch for the Yankees to sweep tonight, then sweep in Fuckway park in September

The Yankees will take the division this year on another RedSux choke

That Met game was painful. They'll find all sorts of ways to lose, god bless them. As for the Yankee game, they lucked out with Manny sitting out.

I wouldn't count on the Yanks doing anything in the post-season except for 'roids, golf, and in Jeter and A-Rod's case, trolling for sex in airport bathrooms.

@1:

Don't get offended, Boorstein is a moron and this is his schtick.

LOL #6

Once again Boston is their own worst enemy...

Beckett pitches out of jam after jam, gives up fourteen hits and only four runs

and Boston batters only manage one hit in six innings..?

something smells bad. This will be the tipping point where the RedSux die

This Yanks/Red Sox rivalry is way overblown, since it's been some unexpected team winning it all the last six seasons. I bet that it will not be either one of these overrated hack teams.

except'04, but again everyone expected the Yanks to win it all, and we all know what happened.

The Yankees have been closer than this already and blown their chance to close the gap. They might grab the wildcard, but they're not taking the division from Boston.

Not that it really matters. Boston just lost one of their major bats, and the Yankees are mostly a group of tired old men. It's Detroit or Anaheim's world series to lose, this year.

Um, yeah, because surely no one in the NFL ever used steroids.

Yankees, tired old men??? Yeah, those 24 year olds sure are tired!
