Community Asks for Safer Streets Through Mural

2007_08_mural.jpg

In recent years, Third Avenue in Brooklyn has seen three children killed by vehicular traffic. Last year, 4-year-old James Rice was fatally struck by a Hummer at Third Avenue and Baltic Avenue, and in 2004, PS 124 Juan Estrada and Victor Flores were fatally struck by a vehicle as they crossed Third Avenue at Ninth Street, just blocks away. On Tuesday, arts organization Groundswell Community Mural Project unveiled a mural at Third and Butler: In the mural, the three children are represented, asking drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians alike to respect each other on the road and to prevent any more tragedy.

As Streetsblog had reported shortly after Rice's death, the Department of Transportation had made recommendations like creating neckdowns and a raised crosswalk in the wake of the 2004 deaths, but never actually did anything. Recently, the DOT told the Brooklyn Paper that work for road improvements to increase safety will begin soon.

Brit in Brooklyn has more pictures of the mural's unveiling. Rice's grandfather spoke, imploring drivers to be more careful - the Hummer driver who hit Rice only got a ticket for failure to yield.

Yeah a Mural..

That'll do the trick..

Look for bullet holes in the Mural after this weekend

Excellent. It is an outrage that a "Failure to Yield" ticket is all that comes of a child's life.

Cars (car drivers) are given too many exemptions from common decency.

"There oughta be a law" enforcing a zone of safety around pedestrians and cyclists of about 5 feet per 10 mph. And they oughta enforce it.

Love the street signs. Any idea if those oare actual signs anywhere. Nice fresh looks to old messages. And lets face is "Slow kids playing" is like "duck and cover".

Oh Yeah, and "Guest" is a punk I reckon he's a steroidal bully. I hope that he's happy, though I doubt it.

I don't think this mural is going to anything but distract drivers.

It'll be covered with gang tags by next month.

Gang tags and bullet holes? Are we just stereotyping here because it's in a predominantly minority neighborhood. Last I checked Boerum Hill is pretty safe so I won't expect to see either on this mural except for some chipped paint from the next car crash.

Yeah it's not really bullet hole-flying territory. 3rd Avenue and 9th St as well is just industrial and 2 & 3 story wood-frame homes. It's not Compton.

Yay, the traffic death problem is solved with the mural.
Next, ets send the mural painters to Newark where a mural can solve the murder problem, then to Iraq where they can end the violence there with a mural.

Funny, I was nearly run over by a truck making a turn from Union to 3rd Ave today when I had the right of way. I think once drivers get to Third Ave they think the area is deserted and no one will notice if they blast through an intersection with total disregard for those in it.

Oh yeah, screw murals. They should just have some undercover cops walking back and forth across the intersections.

why are staffers dissing jen chung's story?
she felt it was important enough to post and so do I.
this isn't suppose to stop auto related deaths, the title says, community asks for safer streets through mural.
it appears other methods are falling on deaf ears.
like cancer, one of these days one of your loved ones will be in an auto accident.
