NYC Fountains, From Bethesda to the Unisphere

2007_08_bethed.jpg

Two years ago, we wondered if there was a big list of all the fountains in New York City. We haven't made that much progress with the list, but at least now we have a list of the "display fountains" the Parks Department maintains. And it's interesting - Brooklyn only has three while Staten Island has eight. Of course, there are many fountains outside of the Parks Department's jurisdiction (for instance, the fountain outside the Brooklyn Museum), so if you can help remind us of others in the comments, that would be great.

And this lovely photograph of Bethesda Fountain is from ~Raymond on Flickr.

I'm a little pissed at the Parks Department regarding fountains.

I ride my bike 3-4 days a week in Flushing Meadows Park, and those fountains haven't been on all spring and summer. In fact, the Parks Department told a WCBS reporter that the reason the big globe hadn't been all year -- and would not be on -- was because it had a leak problem, and couldn't be activated. I asked a parks department grub what the dealio, and he said the PD wouldn't pay to have it on.

Now -- lo and behold -- the big globe is ON -- as is are many of Flushing Meadow's other fountains.

I guess the park is worth making look good for the tourists at the U-S Open, but not for you and me and the thousands of other Queens residents who pay taxes and use that park all year long.

Fountains are good enough for Manhattan, but not Queens.

    F*** the parks department.

And thank you for listening to my rant.
