- Yankees 5, Red Sox 3: This game wasn't important in the American League East race. If a miracle occurs over the next three weeks, it may be looked upon as signifcant, but right now it simply helps the Yankees in their quest to make the playoffs as the wild card. Andy Pettitte threw seven innings of three-run ball, and the Yankees broke a 3-3 tie when Johnny Damon homered off Daisuke Matsuzaka in the seventh inning. Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera also pitched in for the scoreboard-watching Yankees, who should have their eyes on the Mariners-Angels series.
- Phillies 4, Mets 2: How many games is Guillermo Mota going to blow for the Mets? Any reliever would be better at this point. He gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Howard in the bottom of the 10th as the Phillies won their second straight in a four-game series. The most excruciating part of this game came when the Phillies tied the game in the eighth inning on a roller up the third-base line that just stayed fair. Tom Glavine threw seven shutout innings but didn't get the win, and the Mets have to be thinking about avoiding a sweep in the back of their minds.
- At the U.S. Open, Maria Sharapova broke out a red dress and won in style, nearly scoring a double-bagel win in her first-round match. Andy Roddick followed that up with an entertaining win over Justin Gimelstob. Daniela Hantuchova, the No. 9 seed on the women's side, was the highest-profile casualty.
- Shock 71, Liberty 70 (OT): At 16-18 during the regular season, the Liberty probably didn't deserve to be in the playoffs. Despite giving themselves plenty of chances to win this game, the Liberty players couldn't close the deal. They led by 10 points in the third quarter and by five with two minutes to go in the extra session. Janel McCarville couldn't tie the game by hitting a free throw in the closing seconds, and the Liberty got sent home. The Shock, the defending champions, avoided the upset, but maybe the Liberty exposed them as a vulnerable team.
- Staten Island 1, Aberdeen 0: This game remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when the Baby Bombers won on an infield single by Donald Hollingsworth.
- Brooklyn 3, Hudson Valley 2: Ezequiel Carrera stole the show in this one. He went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored in his team's win.

It was not a "double bagel" for Maria. Good Try though. The Italian broad won one game, it was the biggest cheer from the crowd...except for the red dress of course.
Sharapova won 6-0, 6-1 which is NOT a double bagel.
You guys are Yankees obsessed. I'm not a Mets fan nor do I live in NYC BUT:
I am a White Sox Fan, the worst in their division, yet I support the Cubs (blasphemy!) cause they are in the race for my city's success.
The Gothamist should do the same. The Mets are important in NYC right now (blasphemy!), the Yanks are not.
Go Mets!
didn't Brooklyn and Hudson Valley play two games tonight? Brooklyn won both 3-2 and 4-0.
haha, matty...it goes to tell you something when the yankees are getting more coverage than the mets. They ARE the most important team in NYC and they probably will stay that way for years to come. The Yankees will always be a threat (except against the Angels) to get a surprise win, the Mets, well, they're the Mets, and they'll always remain second class in my heart. :-p
god, mota is so awful. he really needs some more 'roids.
or perhaps, Matty, you should consider that the Mets are leading their division by four games over the Phillies and six games over Atlanta. The Phillies are the Phillies and will break the hearts of their fans (a group that includes me) in the coming month; they're not really a threat. The Yankees, on the other hand, are only one game back from the AL Wild Card bid.
On the other hand, I don't know much about Mota, but Howard is leading the NL in RBIs and has 35 HRs (3rd in the NL) on the season, despite injuries in the early part of the season; translation: they guy can hit even if your pitcher doesn't suck.
Well what I meant to say is that this site should focus more on Women's basketball.
I agree; but this whole city prefers to cover the Yankees first; even in a good year. Remember last October? the Mets made it farther in the playoffs; yet the Yankees downfall was the first story on some nights at the start of the Mets-cards series.
In any case, I think Mota should go back on steroids. Yes, he can throw 95 mph, but he has no real juice or movement on his pitches now.
Agreed, Mota back on 'roids ASAP.
A post about Maria Sharapova is worthless without pictures. Actually, Daniela Hantuchova too.
Henn gets sent down. Moose earns a vacation.
Pettite and Joba pitch brilliantly.
Hey, Joe: this is survival. If Roger gives up three runs in the first, you can't leave him in there.
And, am I the only one worried about relying on Kennedy, a rookie, for the pennant run?
