- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: Is there a bank robber hitting up multiple banks on the Upper West Side? There were robberies at 2438 Broadway and 59 West 86th St; there were also two separate police vehicle MVAs in The Bronx and Brooklyn; and a fatality under a train in Jackson Heights (it says A, but we'll assume it's the E).
- If any Wall Street types you know were depressed yesterday after the Dow lost 280 points, they'll be happier today: The Dow gained almost 250 points in a rally and Nasdaq had its biggest rally in a year (thanks to speculation that Apple will introduce new iPods before Christmas).
- Just in time for the start of school, a federal judge upheld the city's ban on metal bats during high school games. The law hits the books Saturday and groups opposing the ban have yet to decide if they're going to appeal.
- Also in time for school: Almost half of NYC teens have had sex: More than two-thirds use condoms, while only 8% use birth control pills.
- Quinnipiac pollster Mickey Carroll talks to The Politicker about Spitzer's scandal ("It's crazy!").
- Stop dreaming about your home fix it's and make them happen: Brownstoner is having a Salvage Fest on September 8.
- The 12-year-old girl hit by a stray bullet in Crown Heights was back playing with her friends yesterday.
- Robert A.M. Stern Architects will be designing the George W. Bush Presidential Library.
- Finally, a note to all aspiring gangsta rap parody artists. Don't film the video at the grocery store you work in like a pair of brothers in New Jersey did. That will get you fired.

Condoms are not considered birth control?
the A goes to jackson heights now?
2 - If you look at the article you'd know that birth control refers to the Pill.
Great photo.
The DOW gains on one company's potential gain. HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Apple is going to introduce an upgrade for the ipod. What next, Iran and Iraq along with Israel are going to kiss each other's ass and make up?
Just amazing how those pieces of absolute shits downtown garner the millions that they have no concept of how it's generated.
Condoms are not a birth control device?
It appears that those that make those decisions and choices are a bit DUH?
If it was up to me, the first child without a father and mother that accept responsibility is a free surf and having somewhat the same name, the second child is an OK, but the bitch is just having a good time, the third is somewhat irreponsible because they named the kid for some lost town in outer Nairobi.
But really does this world need an explosion of kids that can't spell Al Sharpton?
Yeyah! We just might be seeing the new video iPod with a touchscreen a la iPhone. Good thing I held out with my 4G iPod (circa 2005) - even the newest nano and 5.5G video iPod will appear obsolete soon. Any well-connected readers here with pix...?
iPods are the symbol of the throwaway society.
Well, I bet you have never heard Rachmaninoff's 2nd with Ashkenazy and Previn on an iPod with Ultimate Ears Super-fi 5 Pro earphones. I feel so privileged when I listen to the 2nd movement...
doesn't Apple always either upgrade or introduce new iPods every year in the fall? so why is this so big news?
oh god, head-fi nerds. good god almighty.
The A doesn't go to Queens. Everyone knows this. Do you guys live in NYC?
sorry, i meant, "it said A, but we assume it meant the E" because the A doesn't go to Jackson Heights.
By A train, you must mean the Times Square Shuttle.
I should add Mahler 4th 3rd movement with Szell and Cleveland - you don't know what you're missing...
"iPods are the symbol of the throwaway society."
To be honest, my iPod with approx 200 albums on it, the vast majority downloaded (legally or not) and a rechargeable battery seems much less wasteful than the prior alternative, which was a discman, 200 bought albums (physical media and plastic jewel cases) and god knows how many double A batteries. Sure, an iPod will last 3 years and be thrown away (I agree, a shame) but i never had a discman that lasted more than 4-5 years anyway.
In summary, I throwaway a lot less music related stuff now I have an iPod.
#16, I remember when eco-conscious rockers were pushing the "biodegradable" cardboard jewel case. In my life I have yet to throw away a single CD. Pearl Jam's Vitology is looking pretty nasty these days with its frayed cardboard corners. Sure, downloads don't produce waste but you have to back them up, either on CDs or DVDs or yet another hard drive that is going to fail sooner or later.
that produce rap video reminded me of working at jimmy johns in evanston, il.
i can't believe these kids are getting sued for being kids.
Whether they're legally in the clear or not, it's not a pleasant way to start off your freshman year in college with this extra burden. But then again, one of them is going to U Delaware and the other to some provincial college in PA? Well, it just goes to show what a pair of numbnuts these guys are, and could shirley use a swift kick in the tuckus.
I'm sorry but I'll say this again: what are they going to have at the Bush LIBRARY? AA inspirational word-a-day calendars and Bibles?
umm....the rally in the markets had nothing to do with new ipods.
great photo, really.
um, bush isn't in AA. if he were, and were applying things he would be advised to apply, we wouldn't be where we are today as a nation. maybe there's a "study bible for dry drunk emperors" (my compliments to TVOTR) out there somewhere.
i was thinking the same thing--how do you build a library for an illiterate? it's like a symphony hall and museum in honor of a helen keller (no offense to the hearing- or visually-challenged, just an analogy).
#19...before making elitist comments about other people's intelligence and schooling choices, you might want to use spell-check. Your errors make You look like the ass, and who the hell is shirley?!
#17
are you trying to discredit downloading as a "green" activity because you'll eventually have to throw away a hard drive when it crashes? that's insane.
i'm going to assume you're not though, and tell you that yes, i've had many hard drives fail on me, but i usually find that having two hard drives with your full music library on them is almost 100% safe.
as a matter of fact, about every month i'll back up my entire computer onto a hard drive that sits in a drawer.
and why are people freaking out about a new ipod, you ask? because this one might be the touch screen, which would be the most exciting ipod release since the first generation.
it makes me laugh over coffee to read the rants of people with no lives...

The A goes to Queens. Ask anyone who lives in South Ozone Pk., Howard Beach or the Rockaways.
(And if you were being sarcastic, forgive me as I have just started my first cup of coffee for the AM!)
[20], I was thinking coloring books.
Why can't the Bush library just be located here?
http://gothamist.com/2007/08/29/katrina_two_yea.php
I'm sure the locals would be thrilled!
yes, the head-fi nerds.
