Stray Bullet Hits 12-Year-Old in Brooklyn

2007_08_shot.jpgA 12-year-old girl, who was with her 5-year-old brother, was struck by a bullet on St. Marks Avenue in Crown Heights. The Post reports that the bullet "exited her body" on the left side. The girl was not badly hurt and even managed to react calmly by heading to a bodega for safety.

A woman who was shopping at the store told the Daily News that the girl tugged at her shirt, "She came to me and said, 'Miss, I got shot in the back.' She was a brave, confident, little girl with a strong spirit."

The 12-year-old is in stable condition at Kings County Hospital. Apparently a 13-year-old girl may have witnessed the shooting, telling the News, "I saw a guy with a gun, running. I was really nervous." Police used bloodhounds to find the shooter, but they are still looking for a suspect.

Brooklyn, sweet Brooklyn...

That 12yr old should stop snitching especially in Crown Heights.

user-pic

Geez. It's the bad old days again.

Is it me or does 2007 seem to more violent than recent years? Are there any statistics for how we are doing so far this year?

user-pic

What a brave girl.

Hear, hear, guest#7, that is a brave girl indeed. sigh.

user-pic

since when do bullets in crown heights come from the matrix?

yes. one stray bullet, and now it's just like 1978. Jesus people, are you going out of your way to sound like paranoid gentrifiers?

user-pic

Yeah, one stray bullet.
You must only hear about the shots fired that appears on gothamist.
Crown Heights, especially the corridor between Atlantic and Eastern Parkway has had multiple shootings this year.

user-pic

you people must not go out at night. there's shootings everywhere or at least shots fired.
think about it, all the illegal guns, all the law enforcement agencies, retired and active who live in NYC,
gunfire is almost a given.

Unfortunately, people get shot at all over the city. So let's not pretend that shootings are a phenomenon limited to east Brooklyn or that we are all in danger of getting hit. Some perspective is called for.

Uh, so if "people get shot at all over the city" doesn't that mean "we are all in danger of getting hit?"

Uh no, it doesn't. Your odds of getting shot at are pretty low. You can actually live here all your life without getting shot. Imagine that!

user-pic

we're all in danger of getting hit but less so than say getting hit by a car. we live in this city so packed together and not know who our neighbors are.
your neighbor could be a bad guy or a cop cleaning his gun at night improperly or that new rookie cop playing with his gun. Happens almost every year.
or, you could get hit by a sniper in Stuy town.

Oh yeah...... but that was a guy shooting a shotgun out his window, wasn't it?

Too bad this story couldn't meld with the flasher story and have the guy hanging brain get shot in the nutsack, then wander into a bodega and say "Miss, I got shot in the nutsack."

user-pic

I believe mr. stuy town sniper was shooting a .22 rifle. like mr. jrod5417 said, your odds of getting shot are pretty low.
I'm born and raised in NYC, Manhattan, never shot, hit by car twice. Both during wet weather when the car skidded and hit me.

since when do bullets in crown heights come from the matrix?
ever since the one moved in.
