Last Night's Action: Keep It in the Park

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg

  • Tigers 5, Yankees 4: Joe Torre says the Yankees are "all right," and that's a good description. They're not in great shape, but they're not quite foundering. Phil Hughes allowed three early Tigers home runs -- while going in a pitchers' park -- and the Yankees couldn't make it up against Detroit's bullpen. After the Red Sox swept the White Sox, the Yankees sit 7 1/2 behind Boston in the American League East. That wild card looks plenty tempting now.

  • Dodgers 6, Mets 2: After taking a flyer on David Wells, the Dodgers reaped the rewards. The lefty threw five effective innings and denied the Mets the sweep. John Maine hasn't looked dominant of late, but he could learn a few things from Wells. Keeping the walks down helps pitchers immeasurably Free passes didn't hurt Maine Sunday. The loss only featured one walk, but Maine is still 1-3 with a 7.77 ERA in five starts in August.

  • Shock 76, Liberty 73: A valiant Liberty second-half comeback came up short, and now the two teams will play a deciding Game 3 on Tuesday. After missing its chance to pull of the stunning upset against the defending champions, the Liberty will be lucky to be in that one.

  • AVP Brooklyn Open: Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh got revenge for last week's loss in Boston by wiping boardwalk with Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh, 21-18, 21-16. It was their 11th AVP title this year and 16th title overall.
  • Staten Island 9, Lowell 6: The Baby Bombers love their big innings. Six runs in the eighth helped them win this one against the Spinners.

  • Brooklyn 8, Vermont 2: Dylan Owen and Brooklyn's bats make for a good combination. The pitcher improved to 8-1 (with a 1.82 ERA) as the Cyclones won on the road.
