Laptop Containing City Employees' ID Data Stolen

stolenlaptop2.jpgThe laptop of a private consultant for the Financial Information Services Agency was stolen from a restaurant last night. The stolen computer could contain the personal financial information of as many as 280,000 retired city employees and the obvious concern is that the information could fall into the hands of identity thieves. The Daily News reports that the data could possibly include the names, address, social security numbers, and pension information of thousands of retirees.

Police sources indicate the computer was stolen around 8:20 pm Saturday night from the Korean restaurant Kang Suh at 1250 Broadway between 31st and 32nd Sts. and police interviewed the consultant Monday. The information on the computer may have been encrypted, but that is still under investigation.

1010WINS reports that City Comptroller William Thompson, who oversees the pension funds of city employees, was "outraged," and wanted to know how the members of the pension system would be protected from identity theft. In the meantime, a mayoral spokesman said that all city retirees whose data may have been on the laptop will be notified.

New rule: don't bring your laptops to random Korean restaurants if it contains vital information.

That's just retarded. What kind of city agency lets this kind of data out on a portable computing device to begin with. I work for government (occasionally) and they're really strict about this stuff.

I can understand how this happens. My brother works for the state and has vital information on his laptop, which was stolen out of his car. It's information that you need with you, and sometimes while in transit you stop and eat.

I am in complete agreement with comptroller William Thompson's outrage. Someone should be held accountable if any of this personal data is exploited. If only we could figure out who is responsible for overseeing the handling and administration of the city's pension system. Hmmm, who would that person be . . .?

GOOD! City Employees work at a snails pace. Perhaps this will wake them up.

I wonder if they person that stole it knew all this information was on it before it was all over the news?

Still being interviewed?

How many times can they ask the unfortunate guy what he ordered?

Is there a Korean spa attached to that restaurant?

Any organization should assume that X number of laptops will be stolen or lost. Therefore, laptops should *never* have sensitive information stored locally. Sensitive info should be stored on a secure server within the organization.

If the laptop user needs access to such sensitive data, they should log in to a password-protected server to access it.

Dear Reality Czech,

Wow... you must have absolutely nothing in your life if that's your comment.

I hope you are some high paid IT dude that works 16 hours a day and know's not a fraction of the happyness shared by so many city workers.

RmG (NOT a city worker, but someone with compassion and understanding)
