READING: Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Presidential candidate John Edwards, will have the spotlight on her for the night as she reads from her memoir, Saving Graces. The tale of her teenage son's death and her current battle with cancer may have you grabbing for a box of tissues (and voting for her hubby?).
7pm // Borders [461 Park Ave] // Free
MOVIE: Postponed until Monday > Head out in the rain for a screening of the classic Marlon Brando flick, On the Waterfront. With plenty of Manhattan and Red Hook in it, the story follows a washed-up ex-prizefighter working on the docks for the local gang boss. As a bonus: "A conversation with filmmaker Jacob Burckhardt, a screening of his short Marten's Bar (5 minutes, 1976) – a poetic tribute to a solitary life shot in Manhattan and Red Hook, Brooklyn and based on a poem by Edwin Denby – and a screening of his father Rudy Burckhardt’s Up and Down the Waterfront (8 minutes, 1946) – an elegy to the city’s waterfront with its crates and boxes unloading in the morning, lonely men sitting on half-broken docks in the afternoon, and sailor bars at night – precede the film." And like at any good cinematic event, there will be free popcorn!
8pm // Elevated Acre [55 Water St] // Free
If for some reason you still want to see a movie outdoors, The Fifth Annual Central Park Film Festival insists they are still beginning tonight rain or shine. "The festival consists of FREE outdoor screenings and a DJ will spin tracks to match the movie's theme. WABC reporters will introduce the films, and Bloomberg will provide FREE gourmet popcorn (think popcorn and Oreos) for all." Tonight's movie: Staying Alive!. Bring an umbrella-ella-ella...
6pm // Rumsey Playfield [Central Park at 69th St] // Free
If you want to catch a more current movie, check out a screening of Leonardo DiCaprio's The 11th Hour (showing at the Landmark Sunshine) and head over to a discussion about the film with Air America radio host and author Thom Hartmann. Clips of the feature length documentary, which explores "the environmental crises caused by human actions and their impact on the planet," will be shown. With many of the world's most prominent thinkers, activists and even Mikhail Gorbachev having participated in the film -- get ready to face the reality of the planet's life systems. Watch the trailer here.
9pm // The Tank [279 Church St] // Free, RSVP here
THEATER: The American Living Room Festival surges onward at HERE with Poli Degaine (Punchy Draw). Now doesn’t this sound like zany fun? “Two puppeteers on the run are bringing with them a massive weapon of hilarity: they draw Polichinelle, the most famous puppet in the world and, with unbridled enthusiasm, get ready to perform a show of which exceptional qualities they have proclaimed. But, as planned, nothing goes as planned… Polichinelle laughs at everything. Death included.” Brought to you by wild French marionnettists La Pendue; theater blogger Lauren's Got Moxie loved it and says "the audience went crazy for the show." - John Del Signore
8:30pm // HERE Arts Center [145 Sixth Ave] // Tickets cost $15
MUSIC: Tickets are still on sale for the Jose Gonzalez show tonight at the Spiegeltent -- a great pairing of venue and musician. Wonder if he'll play The Knife cover from that amazing Sony Bravia ad. Mike Wexler opens.
10pm // Fulton Fish Market, Pier 17 // $35

Just FYI: The movie's been rained out. They'll screen it on Monday instead of tonight.
Er, 'On the Waterfront' is *about* Red Hook, only they filmed it on the New Jersey waterfront.
