TV Dinners: August 20-26

tvdinner.jpgWhat’s worth watching, food-wise, on TV this week?

Tonight on No Reservations (10pm on the Travel Channel), Bourdain goes to French Polynesia. Serious Eats reviews the series—and his trip to Brazil—here.

On Top Chef, Episode 9 airs Wednesday at 10pm (Bravo). This week, Chef Geoffrey Zakarian is the guest judge. On last week’s episode, no one was eliminated. Grub Street hates it when everyone makes nice. We agree: it doesn’t make very good television. And Bourdain is not a big fan of Howie, calls him Howie Knows Best and numbnuts. Hee.

Martha Stewart continues in repeats this week (10am, NBC). No guest chefs this week, but each day she’s making a different kind of pie.

And PBS (Channel 13) continues their Sunday afternoon five-show lineup, from 4-6:30pm. First up is Chef’s Story, this week featuring Marcus Samuelsson (of Aquavit), then Food Trip with Todd English at 4:30pm, featuring the chef’s favorite things. America’s Test Kitchen follows with a summer cookout, followed by Lidia Bastianich on Lidia’s Italy, then by an episode on Mexico on Daisy Cooks! With Daisy Martinez.

How did Anthony Bourdin get to be so famous? His restaurant is a glorified TGIFridays and his book was mildly amusing.

"Top Gear" makes its USA premiere tonight on the BBC America
network, with two eps at 8 and 9 PM. I had the good fortune of watching an episode of this program on an Icelandair flight from Paris to Reykjavik earlier this month and, if the laughter on the plane is any indication, this could be a hit. I would describe it as "Car Talk" meets "Monty Python." Excellent viewing. Highly recommended.
