Hawke Eyes the Changes in NYC

2007_08_arts_hawke.jpgWith a new movie coming out based on his first novel, The Hottest State, Ethan Hawke talks to The Daily News about how New York has changed since it was his muse in 1997.

"You know that great diner where we talked before?" asks Hawke, talking about the Chelsea spot he was giving interviews at last fall for his Tony-nominated work in the epic trilogy "The Coast of Utopia." "It's gone! I went away and came back, and it was gone."

He also notes his disbelief when Tower Records closed, and of course at the heart of his city, the Hotel Chelsea, is much turmoil. He stopped by his old residence after the recent changes were announced to do an interview and "saw Stanley Bard, the manager, and I said, 'What the hell's going on?' I just love Stanley. He's taken care of me my whole life. And I love that place. Chelsea Hotel is the last man standing. It's the last beacon of, 'Not gonna fall to corporate America.' And it looks like it just fell." Stanley told us about this visit in a recent interview we did with him saying Hawke "embarrassed these people" (the new management).

As for his new movie, it was filming around town last year and even turned the building across from his hotel haunt green. And speaking of green, maybe he can donate some ticket sales and help bring the Bards back...or buy the hotel himself.

I loved him in gattaca

also people saying they remember when NYC used to be cool remind me of scene kids who remember when *insert subculture here* used to be cool.

It's kind of a cliche at this point.

its too bad he doesnt have enough money to actually invest in the city.

I didn't know he likes to get wet?

Maybe he can ask his ex-wife. Isn't she dating that hotelier or somebody?

its too bad he doesnt have enough money to actually invest in the city.

And if he did he would probably put his money into luxury condos. Sorry, but that's where the higher returns are. Anybody with significant assets is going to turn them over to a private banker to invest and that person has a fiduciary duty seek the highest returns. Conveniently it allows the rich to not really know what their money is doing. It could be used to buy up a company, load the company with debt, pay the new owners a nice dividend, and throw the company into insolvency and it's workers into unemployment. But hey, they drive Priuses.

Ethan Hack has about as much relevance to NYC as any of you hipster fucktards. He doesn't have enough cash to make a difference, and he wouldn't know the first thing about running a hotel, even a perennial shithole like the Chelsea.

He's not that good of an actor, even less talented as a writer, and far too full of himself to be worthy of your accolades.

Who's taking bets that #7 "guest" is Uma?

You go, girl friend!

cliche my arss
it is sso gloomy in the arts lately in New York all the real core of the underground is gone
only bankers and students come to stay for longer than 6 months
what ugly buildings everywhere popping up in downtown
soho fartists selling to bankers their precious lofts
closing down
New York is closing down
you fools

not even the remainders can distinguish art from corporation
sad
snif
good bye York Old

Ethan Hawk wrote a novel? Bawahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

new york didn't used to be "cool," it used to be a living, vibrant, edgy city. now it's just another town in america. welcome to the new midwest.

i wish ethan hawke would put it together to save the chelsea the way bette midler helped save the community gardens...or what's left of them after many were plowed under by condos.

This is why Jersey City is so much cooler than New York.

Congratulations Ethan!!!!

Congratulations Ethan!!!!!!!!!!

He shouldnt be talking at all about the chelsea hotel, because on the hotel's blog was a story abour Mr. Hawke doing tons of drugs, and romping around with hotel prositutes. Is that good for his image to even have lived in or have been associated with a place filled with drugs, prostitutes, and crackheads? Well I guess all the other stars are doing it so why not. On second thought maybe it is good for his career. He could be the next Lindsay Lohan but the man version.

Honestly if I lived in that crack den I would be really embarassed to tell anyone, especially if i was famous. No famous people really live there anymore. Most rich/ famous people can afford better accomodations.
