NYPD Warns of Potential Enemies Within

jihad.jpgThe NYPD released a 90-page report this week detailing how Western native residents can become politically radicalized and adopt a terrorist mindset. Although the report claimed that the likelihood of such transformations is lower in the U.S. than in European countries, the conclusions reached by the study were decried by civil libertarians and advocates for Arab-Americans. The NYPD's study is based on the cases of 11 plots over the past six years.

Radicalization of an individual reportedly follows a sequence of four distinct stages, although the report is careful to point out that individuals who go through some of the stages will not necessarily progress to committing terrorist attacks.

  • Pre-Radicalization: seemingly ordinary individuals with regular lives and jobs adopt a jihadist mindset as their own.

  • Self-Identification: individual begins to drift away from his or her prior identity and associate almost exclusively with others sharing a new and similar mindset. This phase is usually triggered by a personal catalyst such as the loss of a job or a loved one or real or perceived persecution.

  • Indoctrination: an individual intensifies jihadist beliefs and concludes that personal action is required to further his or her cause through militant measures.

  • Jihadization: a member of a cluster of like-minded individuals commits to an identity as a holy warrior and actively participates in the planning, furtherance, or execution of terrorist acts.

Critics of the report objected to the fact that it cast certain otherwise positive behavioral changes like giving up smoking or drinking as potential indicators that would raise suspicions of terrorist activity. The executive director of the Council on Islamic-American Relations accused the report of casting a pall of suspicon over the entire Muslim community.

The report focuses exclusively on Muslim terrorists but states "There is no useful profile to assist law enforcement or intelligence to predict who will follow this trajectory of radicalization," and it sounds to us like these steps could be adopted by any radical ideologist. Nonetheless police commissioner Ray Kelly called the study a "groundbreaking" new tool for law enforcement agencies investigating potential terrorists. Kelly also identified the Internet as "the new Afghanistan," as a place for radicals to adopt terrorist training.

So basically, according to #4 "Jihadization" if you commit or plan terrorist acts, and hang out with people who do so, you may be a terroist. Wow that's a radical idea.

This is incredibly interesting. I didn't know the NYPD did such in depth, comprehensive reports. I'm definitely gonna read this.

Hmm...No profile, let's see last time I checked we weren't being attacked by elder Chinese women, nor was there a radical Hindu sect plotting attacks, seems with the exception of Oklahoma City, we've been attacked by male Muslims aged 18-50, perhaps that's a good place to look.

I'm declaring a Jihad against Jihad in the name of all secular human beings

What a complete waste of time and money. Tell me one thing this report says that people don't already know or think they know. One thing.
The only thing this does is rile people up on both sides of the issue...it certainly doesn't make me feel safer.

Oh, and #3 go to India if you want to see radical Hindu attacks against, of all things, Muslims. Everyone can be radicalized...

user-pic

I suggest they be more worried about this,
molon labe. along with Waco.

#3, speak for yourself. i get attacked by elderly Chinese women all the time on the train as they storm through the door frantically searching for a seat.

How come the NYPD is only worried about radicalized islam? McVeigh and the Unabomber sure weren't muslim.

pssst..... i am one of "them"... a "western native" that has been "radicalized" - better look out!!! plus i am white so screw racial profiling, and i am in no "jihad mindset" - just plain PISSED!

sheesh, this report is sooooooooo stupid. i hope the nypd at least paid a good writer so he/she could practice his/her craft. otherwise, this is just another total waste of tax dollars like most other grandiose projects by the nypd these days - rnc arrests, CM arrests/general harrassment, parade rules, shooting blacks 50 times, 50 squad car surge simulations.... the list goes on.

user-pic

don't forget the new change in the 4473's.

I'm not sure I can get behind that image's association of Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens) with bin Laden and Mullah Omar. Unless it's a joke about how he ended up on the no-fly list because people are stupid and make assumptions based on names, it kinda comes off as being stupid and associating anyone with a Muslim-sounding name with terrorists.

user-pic

yeah the republicans... ba da cha

You Guys. At the corner of Broadway and Walker street there are always these crazy ass homeless muslims praying to ALLah on carpets. You know they are planning an attack. please call the police on them.

"The executive director of the Council on Islamic-American Relations accused the report of casting a pall of suspicon over the entire Muslim community.": The contents of the Koran should be enough to do that.

The NYPD has been working with the IDF and has the most comprehensive anti-terror policing task force in the united states and possibly the world...

It's funny how a lot of people just assume the NYPD is just street cops with billy clubs and glocks, but a lot of the force consists of highly educated officers from all backgrounds.

be careful, they're planning to poison us with their hallal carts. those are secret secret bomb factories. that's when they take out their prayer rugs and pray leaving the cart unmanned.
now who in their right mind would do that? right, number 15?

i'm worried about edict #2,
loss of job? loved one? of course when you lose a job you're going to have a new set of friends or any friends at all. Thank God, I could lie and say I'm self-employed or I would be on this wanted list.
yeah, here's a similar mindset, We lost our jobs.
I don't see Hate america on the list. isn't that a biggie? I got news for Kelly, it's not just muslims who feel like that.

Post #20 said: "I don't see Hate america on the list. isn't that a biggie?"

I'm not sure how exactly you a define a "biggie," but I hear the rants of hate against Western values as a whole... Not just hatred of Americans. There have been scores of attacks by Islamic fundamentalists on countries that do not support the United States of America's policies.
Even that American-Al Qaeda jerk said that they do not respect international law, because Al Qaeda only respects Sharia law.

Ironic you choose to illustrate an article about the radicalization of some Muslims with a racist little picture that conflates Yusuf Islam (peace campaigner, folk singer, Muslim) with Osama bin Laden (terrorist leader, Muslim).

Now, why on earth are those Western Muslims feeling alienated?
