Last Night's Action: A Wild Night In Pittsburgh

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Mets 10 Pirates 8: What should have been a laugher became a little too close for comfort two different times Wednesday night. The Mets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, thanks to doubles from David Wright and Carlos Delgado and a home run from Moises Alou, but Pittsburgh crept back into the game. The Pirates scored twice in the second and added single runs in the fourth and sixth to make it a 5-4 game.

The game remained that way until the ninth when the Mets broke things open by scoring five runs. But, Pittsburgh wasn’t finished yet and loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. After scoring three times to cut the game to 10-7, Willie Randolph brought in Billy Wagner to close things down. Pittsburgh got the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Xavier Nady struck out to end the game and give the Mets an exciting victory.

  • Baltimore 6 Yankees 3 (10 innings): After appearing dead for eight innings, the Yankees’ offense woke up in the ninth, scoring three times on a Shelley Duncan home run to send the game to extra innings. Unfortunately, Mariano Rivera simply didn’t have it and gave back those three runs. But, Seattle lost again so the Yankees remain tied for the wild card.
