Newark Unveils New Surveillance Program

2007_08_newarkpc.jpg

Mayor Cory Booker unveiled new technology to help fight crime in Newark. The plan is called "Community Eye," and it will "marry audio gunshot-detection technology with a series of remote-control public surveillance cameras into a network," according to the Star-Ledger. Booker hopes to put 100 cameras and audio gunshot-detection machines to work, as the Newark Community Foundation has promised to raise $3.2 million for the effort. Booker said, "When all the cameras and gunshot detectors are up, we will have about 8 square miles of the city covered."

The detectors will be able to differentiate between gunshots and engines backfiring, as well as alert police immediately for faster response times. Newark police director Garry MacCarthy said, "I kind of feel like a kid on Christmas morning."

Community Eye has been in the works for months, but took on a greater meaning in the wake of the execution-style shooting of four young Newark residents which left three dead. The Newark police are continuing their manhunt for more suspects, as three of six suspects are currently in custody. There is much attention about how the suspects may have been involved in the gang MS-13, which has roots in Central America. While police and prosecutors are trying to downplay the gang connection, two of the suspects had MySpace pages mentioning the gang. Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas McTigue explained most Newark gang violence is related to the Bloods and the Crips.

The NY Times has an article that details the lives of the suspects, a "mixed band of men and boys" whose violent behavior scared residents of an apartment complex in a middle-class Newark neighborhood. It's also believed that one of the principal suspects, Jose Lachira Larranza, shot at least one of the victims, while another 18-year-old (who investigators are still looking for) may have been one of the other shooters.

NJ Governor Jon Corzine visited long survivor Natasha Aerial in the hospital yesterday. He praising her courage and later visited the schoolyard where her brother, Terrance, and two friends, Iofemi Hightower and Dashon Harvey, were killed.

Another program under the guise of "safety" that will no doubt be another way for the gov't to continue to spy on its citizens.

big brother is watching you.
(so is ceiling cat)

This system probably won't make much of a difference. They need to rehabilitate - not just monitor and hope the problems will go away.

How bout just bombing El Salvador into oblivion? Go right to the source.

Oh please, does any of this shit happen in any other western country? No. America is a ficked up place and it is only getting worse. You can't stop this shit.

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
DIVERSITY IS STRENGTH!!!

"WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
DIVERSITY IS STRENGTH!!!"

I've seen this once or twice on this website, what on earth does this mean? Is it some sort of odd irony/paradox thing that 2d-rate minds indulge in?

"Oh please, does any of this shit happen in any other western country?"

Probably not, other Western countries (by which you probably mean white Christian countries, and not the obvious crime-ridden Latin American countries in the Western hemisphere right? Click through this for fun http://www.google.com/search?q=crime+rates+latin+america&hl=en&rlz=1T4PCTA_enUS218US218 ) don't import gangsters, they use homegrown ones.

How could ignorance AND diversity is Strength?
I thought ignorance is Bliss.

Yeah, America is fucked. Everyone should get out while they still can, especially you Reality Czech.

Technology is not going to be a quick fix for the decades old problems of Newark and its history of graft, corruption, incompetence, lawlessness, and having good paying jobs leave the city in search of cheaper labour.

The previous mayor and current state senator, Sharpe James used city credit cards to go to places like Brazil with various women, engaged in land deals where him and his cronies profited, and all sorts of other stuff including getting laws passed in Trenton that would legalize some of the things he was doing. (For those of you who don't know New Jersey allows for dual office holding, so James was both mayor of Newark and a state senator at the same time.) Yet despite the incompetence, lying, stealing, cheating, and letting the city go to hell in a handbasket, he is beloved by many in Newark.

I hate to say it but Cory Booker just seems to be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but the iceberg hit way before he took the helm.

Newark police director Garry MacCarthy said, "I kind of feel like a kid on Christmas morning."

I'm glad MacCarthy is so enthusiastic about his work, but considering his job is curtailing murder, maybe he could dial it back a bit, or find a more tasteful simile?

I'd love to get out, thing is, no other western country allows just anyone to immigrate there, unlike the USA. No other western country allows someone to become a citizen without speaking the national language.

So, pay for my air ticket JMH and at least I'll have a bit of an incentive to go.

Otherwise shut your fatass.

You apparently speak some English, which is spoken in many other countries besides the United States. Further, given how much smarter than the rest of us you seem to believe you are, learning a new language and finding a job should be no problem at all. Seems a small hurdle to overcome in order to be able to get off the one-way train ride to hell that you seem to believe New York is.

7: It's doublespeak from the book 1984

When I first heard of this new measure to fight Gun related crimes in Jersey, I laughed out loud ! Because it's not going to help the police get the guns off the streets, It's going to muddle the process even further . Instead of capping the gun crimes Police after they arrest the "Would-be Shooter" will trace the gun back to the Manufacture who has nothing to do with how the firearm was used in the crime ! OK, Let's look at it from another prospective . Say the gun used in a crime is traced back to a previous owner . What are the Police going to do ? Are they going to arrest the previous owner for selling the gun to the shooter ? Will they arrest the previous owner for there connection to the crime ? (Arresting them as Accessories to the crime)See what I mean ? It's not going to work this is a good start towards help to slow-down all the gun play in the hood out there but it's not going to stop it . I think that if the Police were to just do there jobs and fight the crimes in those plagued neighborhoods within a year OR two they would make significant advances ! As usual, The easy way out is the norm and things always seem to get worst ! Posted by; "Still Not Amused"
