After Settlement, Imus Slapped With Defamation Lawsuit

2007_04_imusgone.jpgThe same day that Don Imus settled his breach of contract lawsuit with CBS, he was slapped with a lawsuit by a member of the Rutgers women's basketball team. Initial reports yesterday put Don Imus' settlement figures with CBS as high as $20 million, but reports today say that figure is actually much lower. In addition to the settlement, The Post says the two sides agreed to a "non-disparaging" clause, forbidding the sides from criticizing the other. The Daily News talked to industry insiders who believe Imus' settlement was in the $10 million range.

Imus had $40 million remaining on his contract when he was fired from his CBS morning talk radio show and was seeking as much as $120 million in unpaid salary and damages. The next step for Imus could be a job at WABC radio, which Imus is reportedly most involved with in discussions. While WABC disputes that they are in talks with Imus, the Daily News says that if the station does add Imus, they may cut Ron Kuby, one of their current morning hosts.

The lawsuit against Imus by Kia Vaughn, a junior center from The Bronx, alleges that Imus, his former co-host Bernard McGuirk, CBS and CBS radio are responsible for damage done to her character and reputation. There's no monetary amount listed in the lawsuit, but Vaughn's attorney Richard Ancowitz said, "The full effect of the damage remains to be seen." The lawsuit alleges that Imus' comments were in the context of a news or sports report, so he had standards to abide by but ignored them and that Vaughn was humiliated, embarrassed and publicly mocked for the comments. It's believed that this is the first suit from a member of the Rutgers women's basketball team.

"Imus had $40 remaining on his contract..."

is that all?

talk about a waste of time and money.

Great! So now we know that Kia Vaughn is a nappy headed ho. She would have been better off not suing.

BTW- Imus looks dead in that photo. Is he?

Everyone should get over themselves. I can't stand this politically correct bull shit. Imus was paid to stir the pot… he did. The Rutgers girls would never have had the fame that they did without Imus’ rude remarks. It is because of his bad taste and manners that they got recognized at all. Lets face it, like the saying goes “Even bad publicity is good publicity”.

This is ridiculous. Imus is an asshole, can't we just leave it at that? Doesn't this girl realize that she is losing her dignity by going after him in what can only be interpreted as a desperate money grab. I'm sure that this has all been traumatic and I don't want to take away from that, but jesus, just call him a dick and move on.

Can I file a lawsuit against anyone who continues to talk about this crap?

I hope that the Rutgers basketball players come after him one at a time until they bankrupt the old fool. Imus loved the court system when he was suing. Lets see how he likes it now!

suing? she'll be lucky if she gets a dime.

Rutgers ladies should pay him for the press.

Is anyone else getting the "Imus Comeback? Vote Now!" banner ad? I know it's not Gothamist's fault but it confuses the ad/content boundaries.

She's going to get plenty in the suit.It is sure to be settled out of court with the lawyer who brought getting the lion's share of the $$$$$$$$$$$$

Why would Imus settle? I'd take my chances with a jury. If you're a public figure you are fair game to anything. And as players on a national runner up basketball team the Rutgers women were public figures.

THE LAUGHMAN COMETH

Welcome back to radio, Don,

You and your laugh-filled show,

Choosing targets like no one else–

Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.

Let’s face it people, if someone called your mom, daughter, or sister a HOE you’d all be reaping restitutions and understandably so. Of course there’s the more civil route…a good old slash and thrash, which we all know would land you in the slammer. Imus is getting exactly what he deserves-- if he took a shot at a religious group you’d all be up in arms!

Is he allowed to go out in public looking like that? I believe he wears a cowboy hat, no?
