Last Night's Action: Another Win

  • Yankees 7 Orioles 6: This game is an example of how good things are going for the Yankees right now. Ace gets slapped around for three runs in the first, no problem. All-time great closer blows it in the ninth, no problem either.

New York stormed back from a 3-0 deficit and overcame a blown save by Mariano as well. As has been usual recently, home runs played a part in the show. Bobby Abreu slapped one to make it 3-2 in the first and Wilson Betemit, getting a rare start at first, hit one in the second to make it 4-3 Yankees.

New York took a 6-5 lead into the eighth and Joba (call me Jaba) Chamberlain set down the side with two K’s in his Yankee Stadium debut. That set the stage for Mariano and Melvin Mora started things with a single. After an out, that sent Mora to second, Rivera got Tike Redman to hit a soft liner to center. Melky Cabrera didn’t have a play on the ball, but he gunned out Mora at the plate to preserve the lead. But the next batter, Brian Robers, singled to right and when Abreu’s throw was high, Redman scored from second.

Still the Yankees had last licks and they took advantage of them. Melky Cabrera was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Jason Giambi single. That brought up the Captain, Derek Jeter, who hit a slow roller to second that Brian Roberts grabbed, but couldn’t get to the plate in time. Melky scored and the Yankees won their fourth straight.

Joba Chamberlain for President! A 99 MPH fast ball and a nasty slider. Does he have a third pitch?

While Boston was trading away prospects to acquire washed up Eric Gagne -- who's blown a few saves for them already -- the Yanks added a homegrown youngster to the roster who's yet to give up an earned run and who strikes out half the batters he faces.
