Don Imus Settling With CBS, May Plan Return to Radio

A developing story from the DRUDGE REPORT: "Radio host Don Imus has agreed to settle his contract with CBS for $20 million, and a non disparaging clause, legal sources claim. The move opens the possibility Imus will soon return to the airwaves -- on WABC in New York! [Top radio executive strongly dismisses Imus will be offered WABC slot]..."

We all remember that four months ago, Imus was fired by CBS from his morning radio show and shortly after MSNBC removed his show from their morning broadcasts, after he called players from the Rutgers' women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos". The ensuing controversy raised questions about decency on airwaves and whether derogatory terms had become too familiar in popular cultural, especially hip-hop music.

The Daily Intelligencer thinks this sounds familiar, because the Imus feature in New York magazine last week mentioned a settlement, including a non-disparagement clause. We can't wait for details of the non disparagement clause. Or to hear what the Rutgers women's basketball team thinks. We do think the Reverend Al Sharpton will be weighing in soon, though he's previously said he wouldn't oppose Imus' return.

As it happens, Imus' former venue CBS-owned WFAN announced their morning drive team of Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton today.

He should never have been fired for that "nappy ho" remark. He should have been fired because he wasn't funny.

Don Imus is generally honest. I don't always agree with him, I don't even like him all that much, but he shows what can be done with good talk radio. And with unvarnished honesty, it's no surprise that some people get a little uncomfortable. Imus certainly doesn't waste the power of his venue on fart jokes the way Howard Stern does. That being said, Don Imus is still a perfect example of what can happen to old guys who try to talk hip.
