Two Arrests in Newark Shootings; Police Still Seek Other Suspects
Yesterday, the principal suspect in the execution-style triple murder turned himself in to Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Booker was at a press conference to announce that another suspect, a 15-year-old, had been arrested when he learned that Jose Carranza would only turn himself in to Booker. Carranza's fingerprint was found on a beer bottle at the scene of the crime, and his photograph was picked out of a photo array by the shootings' only survivor, 19-year-old Natasha Aerial. Her 18-year-old brother Terrance and friends Iofemi Hightower and Dashon Harvey, both 20, were killed during the Saturday killings.
Authorities believe that Carranza fired at least one of the fatal shots, and they looking for at least three others suspects, one adult and two teens. Carranza, who had previously been charged with aggravated assault and raping a child over a four-year period (starting when the child was 4) and was awaiting trial in both cases, will likely be arraigned today, with charges including three murder counts, attempted murder, and robbery. He is being held on $1 million bail. Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow said that she would try the 15-year-old suspect as an adult.
Carranza's surrender was rather dramatic: Upon learning that the suspect would surrender, Booker quickly ended a press conference and then met a lawyer who had brokered the surrender. He met Carranza, who wore a "Hulkmania" t-shirt, on a street near Newark City Hall; Booker recounted, "I had absolutely nothing to say to this individual. He said no words whatsoever." Update: Carranza, a Peruvian immigrant, has pleaded not guilty, and the police have arrested a third suspect (a teenager).

Beyond the numerous grammatical errors in the post (surprise, surprise), if this guy was awaiting trial for aggravated assault and raping a child, why was he allowed to be out of jail? I'm all for innocent before proven guilty, but there are some charges (rape, especially of a 4 year old) that do not warrant a postable bail, if bail at all. Obviously this guy is a shitbag, so the charges of aggravated assault and rape are probably true.

Mexico does a fine job of patrolling their southernn border. Then they pass out maps and water bottles on their northern border.

This is a horrible crime, but making racial attacks against latinos, regardless of country of origin is a non-issue. This particular individual, as well as all other involved, regardless of age, sex, race, language spoken at home, etc. are horrible horrible people with obiviously a nasty criminal past that questions as to why this man in particular was on the streets at all. If the person who did the crime was some other ethinicity people would not say such things. This is not an immigration/Mexican/Ecuadorian issue, this is a horrible tragedy about 3 students that were murdered by some really bad people.

It seems like the commenter at 10 a.m. has a point. After all, when was the last time an English-speaking, American-born resident of Newark committed a violent crime? Probably no more than five minutes ago (I'm only being slightly facetious).
This problem extends beyond any immigration issues, and, to be perfectly frank, that little English quip is personally insulting. My father moved to this country (and into Newark, coincidentally) from Venezuela in 1974. He didn't speak English, nor did his parents or his older brother.
For the record, one of the safest areas of Newark is the predominantly Portuguese Ironbound section. If everyone there is legal, than it's only because immigration laws were more lenient when they came over. If we approach the issue in Newark as an immigration issue just because this guy was Ecuadorian, nothing's going to change.

How the hell did he get out of jail on the 4 year old rape charge? Had he not been given bail, these three kids could still be alive. This only compounds the tragedy further. It's high time that we start treating rape as seriously as murder. We could avoid senseless murders such as this and the murder of the police officer in Brooklyn last month who was also killed at the hand of two convicted rapists.

This basically shows haw messed up the justice system when it comes to sexual assault/abuse cases. If this guy happened to sell a lot of marijuana, you better believe he would be behind bars, but because he violated a little girl repeatedly, he gets to walk the streets.
There should pedophile and sexual abuser specific jails and they should remain there until they are all dead. When people commit heinous crimes, they always go back and notice the pattern. Fox News tends to go nuts when this topics come up and this is something I actually find myself agreeing with Bill O' Reilly on (which is nuts in itself). If there were stricter laws on disgusting perverts, then maybe other crimes could be deterred. I mean there is a show on TV dedicated to catching perverts who want to sleep with 12 year olds on every week. The effect of sexual abuse does not only end with the victim and the family. A civilization that does not punish offenders of this kind to the full extent of the law can't really maintain any moral high ground.

If a person comes to this country with values that are not consistant with the average productive tax payer, and they remain in a state of culture shock, then acting out in a deviant manner then they are a problem. In some parts of CHINA, they still kill little girl infants or abort them because they cost to much. In many ASIAN regions little girls and boys are solicited and used as prostitues. Some people implied that Imette St. Guillen was a snuff murder. It is alleged that certain Asian cultures and their pornagraphy are the go to place for snuff films.
Immigration is the issue IF the come here with a the sleezy mentality that disrupts our way of life.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when Americans are learning manners and morals from sitcoms. There are plenty of American born molesters. This is a deep rooted problem in America and most places discussing the effect of sexualizing beings before their time. We all wonder why Britney Spears lost her mind and why little pagent girls develop eating disorder. Because this girls were sexualized for AMERICANS and the media before it was appropriate.
I agree that many other countries have disgusting protocol towards women - I have seen 9 year old girls in Thailand being sold into prostitution for a refrigerator.
