Pinkberry Taking Over the World

pinkberry6thave.jpgpinkberry_mornheights%5B1%5D.jpg

Did you ever wake up one morning and feel like something's not quite right with the universe? The other day, we had that very feeling. During the course of the day we learned that not one, not two, but THREE new Pinkberry locations are in the works in addition to the four existing branches. Do we really need three more Pinkberrys? Some people say yes. We mentioned the word "Pinkberry" in front of a friend last night and her reaction was downright freakish. She spewed adoration for the tangy unsweetened yogurt with cultlike intensity; if there are others like her in the city, then perhaps the exponential growth is a good thing.

Pictured above, the 6th Avenue location, near 12th Street, and another in Morningside Heights, at roughly 112th Street and Broadway. The third upcoming location will be 2nd Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets. Have you seen a Pinkberry in the works in your 'hood? Let us know.

UPDATES: Mia reports that a Pinkberry is in the works at 58th street between 8th and 9th, and Greg & upperwestside girl mention one either on Broadway between 70th & 71st, or 71st and Amsterdam. A commenter has spotted one on "3rd Ave & the 20s." Taking. Over. The World.

I like Pinkberry. I think it's yummy. I like the bitter yogurt. It's also a nice thing for us lactose intollerant people. (Yes yogurt is dairy, but the lactose is already broken down and therefore doesn't make us sick.)This is why I do there, not because it's a fad.

I agree it's a little pricy, and I hope it doens't go crazy with store like Starbucks and such, but a few more locations is nice to have.

And if you don't like it, then fine. Don't eat it. Then, I don't have to worry about you making the lines longer.

    hey, it's spectator!

Soon the city will be fulled with all corporate businesses.

I thought the general consensus was that Pinkberry tastes funny.

It does to me anyway. I've tried to like it, but just can't.

One coming on st marks between 3rd and 2nd Aves as well...

Yogurtberry is another gelato chain from SoCal..considered a poorman's PinkBerry..yet just as packed and popular.

  • guest

I had a Yolato frozen yogurt the other day with mango topping, after I saw that the Pinkberry on Bleecker still isn't open. It was actually very tasty and I'd go back again.

    "Thousand Island dressing."

Someone asked if Pinkberry is opening up any new locations in the outer boroughs. On 37th Avenue off 82nd St. in Queens I spotted a sign for "Yogurtberry: Coming Soon." The logo was nearly identical. Yes, the impostors have arrived...

Also, my cousin worked a brief stint at Pinkberry. The manager made a big deal about the "secret formula," which my cousin told me is powdered yogurt. Everyone is paying all this money to eat yogurt with yogurt added to it.

    1.Dear NYC,

You're killing Mom and Pop. Fuck you!*

    2. Mom & Pop over charge and have bad service, they also do not speak engrish.

Actually, Mom and Pop don't overcharge - they just can't afford to sell stuff for the same price that the major soul-sucking chains do. I know it's easy to say, "oh well, too bad," but it's ruining this city.

And while some Mom and Pop's should try harder to learn the language, I have no problem with them as long as they are a productive part of this society.

And as far as service goes, I get much worse service in chain stores, because they don't give a shit about their customers beyond prices.

13/18 - psst, those people are not actually New Yorkers...

  • guest

A similar chain, Yolatto, tastes better, costs less and has shorter lines on average. I only know of the one on McDougal Street below Washington Square park, but I think there are a few other locations in the city. They offer but soft serve and a version with Gelato consistency that is out of this world. I highly recommend it.

there really is a sucka born everyday.

you people would eat shit on a stick as long as the packaging had a sleek design and a $10 price tag. Tools!

  • IceCreamNewYork

I'm not sure just how many Pinkberrys Manhattan should have before it becomes oversaturated, but surely the outer boroughs can support some? I think they'd do much better if they expanded outwards instead of taking over Manhattan.

How about some love for the outer boroughs, Pinkberry?

    Dear NYC,

You're killing Mom and Pop. Fuck you!

  • guest

The name still sounds like "dingleberry" (on a pink anus, no less!).

Just switch to the thick greek style yougurt (even the fat free version is great) and add some frozen berries and honey. Whether chilled or put through an ice cream maker, it's so much better for you, and delicious to boot.

  • guest

Maybe they're opening up new stores so the lines won't be so bad. It's why Starbucks opens stores within sight of each other, mostly to minimize wait times.

  • guest

Man, there are a lot of bitter people around here. Lighten up, folks!

  • guest

I can't wait--the midtown east location is opening less than a block from my apartment! Such an odd location, though...

  • guest

    pinkberry the new shake shack.

    shake shack be over.

  • guest

edEx, sure it might have lots of sugar but the target clientele is yuppie girls that are anorexic or bulimic or possibly both.

and guest #13, yes, New Yorkers are incredibly sheeplike. What makes them even more annoying are their claims to be individualistic and cutting edge when most of them are so desperate to fit in that they all wear the same clothes and frequent the same businesses. Baaaaah!

  • hslaton

@13 -- You might have a point there. The cupcake thing is really baffling. I will be goddamned if I'm gonna stand in line for a freaking cupcake.

  • cwbuecheler

Anyone who waits in line for an hour for a cup of frozen yogurt is a straight-up idiot. I don't care if it's made from ambrosia and topped with tiny pieces of pure love.

  • Toby von Meistersinger

It is better than another bank, Starbucks, or Duane Reade.

  • Jen S

Pinkberry is gross. I'd rather pay $7 to eat a cup of vomit (with Cap'n Crunch).

  • guest

At least it's not another bank.

  • guest

New Yorkers (at least the ones you see online) love to display freakish obsession with faddish food places.

It's amazing the amount of sheep rants about the latest cupcake joint, or burger stand, or coffe hole.

I guess I can understand it to some extent. . . I was 22 and new to the city once and saw the same behavior. Maybe people are trying a little to hard to identify?

  • upperwestsidegirl

there's also one being built on Broadway between 70th & 71st. I walked past it last night ....

  • Pinkberry's motto should be: "Keeping America Fat; One Yuppie at a Time."

It may feel and taste good, but it is by no means good for you as they claim:

According to the nutritional information on the Pinkberry website: The 13-ounce large size has 16 teaspoons of sugar (65 grams).

    basically, it's a 1/3 of a cup of sugar.

  • guest

There's one coming on 3rd Ave & the 20s, too.

  • robingee

    Stop saying Pinkberry!

  • Brooklyn Enthusiast

I tried Pinkberry the other week and the line was out the door. I am still undecided whether I like it or not. I liked the fruit on top, but the "tang" of the yogurt was strange. Generally I would prefer ice cream or TastyD.

  • hslaton

Simply put, WHO GIVES A SHIT? All this L.A. garbage needs to go back to L.A. It is YOGURT. Or whatever, who cares. More accurately, though, it's a "lifestyle" item. People eat it because they hear celebrities talking about it in US magazine, OK!, or one of those other stupid rags -- which, by the way, you are not an intelligent person if you read. I don't care if you actually are intelligent and you're just like, "Oh, it's candy, it's just like TV, it's OK" -- no it's not. Intelligent people should never buy such a thing. Also anything as popular and "scene-y" as Pinkberry (or Trader Joe's, or Whole Foods) should be viewed with a great amount of suspicion. Speaking of Whole Foods, I can't believe Gothamist is sponsoring a singles event at a FUCKING GROCERY STORE. The apocalypse is truly nigh. (Can anyone tell the weather is affecting my mood?)

  • guest

this smells like krispy kreme to me. remember when everyone was all about jamba juice and that gelato place? and beard papa? I would still have eaten at beard papa if they didn't raise the price to 4 dollars a cream puff. These places are ridiculously overpriced now. It's fast food for the rich stupid and lazy.

  • Opinion Jones

How much you wanna bet I can throw this football over those mountains?

  • guest

you wrote that it's unsweetened which isn't true. they use natural sweeteners.

  • Nick S

what happens in the winter? do people buy frozen yogurt when its 30 degrees out?

  • guest

pinkberry adds sprite to their yogurt for that tangy taste. And it's not real yogurt cause it doe not have provactive cultures. My suggestion is to buy real yogurt. Freeze it and put frozen berries on top and then let it melt for a half hour and you've got the same thing for 1/5 the price.

  • guest

Pinkberry is NOT real yogurt, so don't call it as such. No, New York does NOT need more Pinkberry locations. Do we really need more of this artificial crap in New York?
