Civil War Re-Enactment Weekend at Governors Island

This weekend, you could take a trip back to the 1860s with a visit to Governors Island. It's the Civil War Weekend, and the 119th New York Volunteer Historical Association will "recreate garrison life on Governors Island during the Civil War, portraying officers, soldiers and guards in the Regular Army conducting drills, a guard mount and historic weapons demonstrations." Here's a schedule of events for both Saturday and Sunday:

10:00: Witness the morning calls (sick, breakfast, officers’) at the Garrison and Confederate prisoners being marched to Castle Williams under guard

10:30 - 11:15: Historic Weapons Demonstration on the field on the south side of Fort Jay
11:00: “Caring for the Confederate Prisoners 1” - Visit with the Union Guards as they distribute food rations to Confederate prisoners inside the courtyard of Castle Williams
11:25 - 12:25: Recruitment Rally followed by the surgeon’s inspection of the new recruits in the courtyard of Fort Jay
- 11:25 - 11: 50 for Recruitment Rally
- 11:50- 12:25 for surgeon’s inspection
12:30: Governors Island Music School Performance the courtyard of Fort Jay
1:00 – 1:45: The new recruits learn how to drill and fire a weapon on the field on the south side of Fort Jay
- 1:00 – 1:25 Watch the new recruits get inspected and drilled
- 1:30 – 1:45 Historic Weapons Demonstration
1:00: “Caring for the Confederate Prisoners 2” - Visit with the ladies from the local aid society as they distribute care packages to the Confederate Prisoners inside the courtyard of Castle Williams
2:00: “Civil War Prisoners of War,” a walking tour by Park Ranger John Pollicino on Governors Island as a Civil War prison; begins at Soisson’s Dock
3:00 - 4:00: Historic Weapons Demonstration on the field on the south side of Fort Jay

There are also special lectures on Saturday and Sunday. Take the 10AM ferry from the Battery Maritime Building if you want to catch the early activities.
