Holy Tornado, Brooklyn! Reader Jeanne just emailed us with this observation:
I live in Kensington, Brooklyn and I think that a tornado just passed through. Have you heard any news about a tornado from anyone else? Around 6:30am there were heavy rains, thunder and lightning when all of a sudden the wind got really loud and we could hear stuff smashing into the house. It was all just 30 seconds or so but now there are trees down all over the block.Check out this photograph she sent as well! If you're in an area where trees have been knocked down, be careful - there may be downed electrical wires, too. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Brooklyn, Staten Island and parts of Queens. We're hearing some buildings' roofs have been blown off in Brooklyn - the FDNY is evacuating them.
This morning's thunderstorms have mostly moved out of the area to the east (towards Nassau County), but they drenched the area, which means one thing: Flooding, and lots of it in the subways. Check out the MTA's subway and bus alerts, as well as ones for LIRR and Metro-North (well, when the MTA.info site is actually working - seems to be overloaded now). Expect delays across all lines of the subway system - be patient.
NYC Transit Authority's Paul Fleuranges even told NY1 that riders should wait an hour, if they can, so the NYCTA can get the water pumped out (on a normal day, the NYCTA pumps out 13 million gallons of water), "Today is the day you give us time to get the subways dry." Roadways are also flooded - slip those galoshes on.
Let us know how your commute was and if there are any subways to avoid or to reconsider.
This is a photograph from muuuusic on Flickr, showing commuters looking for ways to get to work because the Times Square subways weren't working.

Update 4:40PM:
The MTA just sent us their service plan for the evening rush, which seems more like what will be running...maybe (we can't access the service alert for NYC Transit - everyone's probably trying to figure out how to get home!):
Posted on:8/8/2007 4:40:23 PMGovernor Spitzer and MTA CEO Lee Sander held a press conference this afternoon to discuss the subway issues. The MTA was taken back by the intensity of the storm and that drainage issues (which we take to mean city drains in conjunction with MTA drains) contributed to problems. the Daily Politics reports, "Spitzer said some three inches of rain fell in about an hour, overloading a system designed to handle 1.5 inches of rain per hour, in spite of improvements made following a 2004 storm - but also by smoke and wind (a large tree that fell across the tracks knocked out the B and the Q)." Spitzer ordered a review of the MTA's drainage system to take place within 30 days and Sander said, ""I am genuinely sorry that we were not able to inform people as best as we can."Due to severe flooding throughout the subway system earlier today, there are still extensive delays on some subway lines. We are working to restore full service to all the affected subway lines. This is the current status of subway operations:

And a reader sent us this depressing update from the MTA about LIRR service:
Due to severe weather earlier today, eastbound NYC Transit customers from the Queens Boulevard subway lines are expected to use LIRR service and/or buses. The LIRR will cancel and combine some trains to provide capacity for dedicated shuttle trains stopping at Penn Station, Woodside, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens and Jamaica. Specific announcements will be made at Penn Station. Additional NYC Transit and LIRR personnel will be assigned to key locations to provide customer assistance. See www.mta.info for specific information or read below.Good luck with the evening commute. Tell us how it went.Customers at Penn Station will experience numerous track changes and are advised not to descend to the platform until their train has been posted. Customers should expect lines and delays. LIRR staff and MTA Police will regulate the flow of customers onto trains, but expect
crowding. If possible, customers should stagger their work hours to avoid travel at peak times.
Update 8:30AM:
Via a kind reader who copied the 8:09AM update from the MTA website, which seems to be down, probably due to traffic (MTA, please upgrade your servers for more bandwidth!):

We're talking crowded trains when they pull into stations and crowded platforms that make you want to turn back home. Note how the MTA recommends you try to take buses when possible.

An amazing photo from reader Faith of a Manhattan-bound platform of a Queens subway station (aka, the left behind):

Good thing I swim to work. Sucks to all you subway usin chumps. You're livin in the past man.
aw fuck. JSQ>33rd St. PATH is also running on a 15 min delay. Why doesn't the MTA have email alerts like PATH? mta.info has no bandwidth.
I'm going to start kayaking to work.
JMZ is not running south of Chambers Street due to Flooding.

Astoria-bound n trains are running on the d or m lines from the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station to the 36th Street Station.
The 1 train is not running uptown or downtown, and in turn the buses are just way too packed. You could see people walking to their stops instead.
I just heard that there are NO trains running.
Walked 20 blocks to DeKalb, took an R train running over the D which turned into an E at W4. Nice!
my wife's telling me all the subways on the west side are down and the buses are too crowded to even bother.
Um, CRAP! Thank you, #5 - I'll add your update to the post.
I rode my bike to work. No delays.
The commute to LGA is a total mess... all the underpasses are flooded.
The tornado thing looks like it's hit more than just Kensington - I saw some brief footage on TV for something destructive that blew through the Orthodox section of Borough Park, too, just 10 blocks from me here in Sunset Park.
I heard a holy clatter at 6:30ish but nothing that sounded like a tornado. Just a wicked storm.
Also, my husband just got turned away from the 9th Ave D/M station - NOTHING running there.
mta.info is so slow.
word on the street is that there is no G service as well.
Today is really the day I'm glad I live and work in Brooklyn; I took the bus.
No trains from 34th St. (Penn St and Herald Square) in either direction A/C/E 1/2/3 N/R/Q/W/B/D/F/V
The latest from mta.info:
Wednesday, August 8 8:30 AM
Southbound service has been restored on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines through the Mott Haven area. All service is operating through the area slowly and customers will be significantly delayed coming into Grand Central Terminal.
There is extremely limited northbound Hudson Line service from Grand Central Terminal. These customers should listen for announcements at Grand Central and check the departure boards for train times and track locations.
There continues to be no service out of Grand Central Terminal on the Harlem or New Haven lines because of earlier flooding in the Bronx.
Metro-North employees are at the affected location. We will update customers as soon as additional information is available.
We appreciate your patience and regret any inconvenience this weather emergency may cause.
There is currently no R train at 77th St. in Bay Ridge. They are saying the computers are down.
anyone know if JMZ is running over williamsburg bridge?
I think it would be easier if they listed the lines that ARE running.
trees down on 86th - think they got an acura and a motorcycle.
walked to work from hell's kitchen--streets seemd fine i.e. no flooded intersections.
my coworker just told me she's about to hop onto the J from the myrtle ave stop to go to manhattan
Yes, looks like my block in Kensington. Lots of trees here, so lots of branches and leaves to get blown around. An entire tree is down in the adjacent street.
The R is shot to hell out here in Bay Ridge. So's the N. The buses are filled to capacity. They were saying at the station to take the F from 9th Street, but now that I see that half the F isn't running, I'm not sure how that's going to work.
does anyone know if the b or q is running?
The same update from the MTA from 8:09:25 AM is still on their page, for folks who can't get it to load, so there's no new information there.
No A/B/C/D from W 4th to 59th as of 9 AM.
Also, the conductor said the power was out on 6th Ave.
There is no B, Q, or S service from Prospect Park. There are trees on the tracks and flooding.
why bother
work from home
call in sick
not worth the hassle
I was just turned away from the R at Union St - the agent there was telling people the problem was specific to that station. We walked to Atlantic/Pacific, and were told no trains were running there either. Or at Borough Hall. Or the 2/3. Lots of people just milling around on the street now...
I think I lucked out. I live in Park Slope. Caught the R right away at Union St. It went to Atlantic-Pacific where it lingered for a few minutes then it went straight to Grand St and then Broadway-Lafayette, which is my stop for work! I actually arrived at work early!
anyone know if there's any service on the V?
Kensington blog has a few pics of the area.

No F or Q trains in Brooklyn. I tried Fort Hamilton Parkway while it was running earlier this morning, it was moving very slow and the cars were packed to capacity and entering the station every 10 minutes or so. The Q wasn't running at all when I walked over to Parkside. Some big trees were down in the park. Looked like it was some powerful wind but I had no idea at the time that there was a tornado involved!
L and G definitely not working, walked to the J/M (both running) and waited 4 trains. The car services were crazy jammed. N was working from canal to union square but i heard the six was not
I love how slowed transit results in fist fights. "Well, I'm not going anywhere, so I'm going to beat in your face."
We live in DUMBO and my husband and I split up to take different trains; he went to the F and I went to the A/C. The A/C wasn't running and the token booth clerk told me that the F wasn't running either, so I came home to wait it out. But I just heard from my husband that he got in okay on the F, just a little slow and crowded. I'm about to head over there now.
I love my bike.
;-)
PATH to WTC runs with 15 min delay... crowded as shit.
G train is not working at all. B61 buses going into Queens are packed and not stopping past Meserole. Heard the 7 train is having problems or might not be working, but I'm not sure of that.
Just wanted to thank everyone who is posting updates, it's really helpful!
no i lucked out
working from home in my pajamas
air conditioning
the sun is out now
i love technology
Took the N from 30th Ave and it took about 30-40 minutes longer than usual, but toughed it out and made it through to Union Square. According to the announcements, that specific train was going to be running as a W to Whitehall Street. Service Alerts saying there is no W in Queens makes no sense - if the N can run, why can't the W which is the same line in Queens?
Also, I would ask the MTA to please stop thanking me for my patience when I am stuck on a train and we are between stations: I'm not being patient, I have no other options at that time.
Brooklyners!
As of 9:30AM, the only trains running at Atlantic/Pacific are the N/R/D/Q.
Oh, I love living in NJ...:)
Is no one else happy about this? Snow day! I feel like a kid again. Fuck you rat race!
I live in Astoria, Queens near the Steinway stop.
I've been told that only the F and the 7 trains are running, and they are advising commuters to take the 101 to Queens Plaza to pick up those lines.
The line for the bus is wrapped around the block. I'm guessing over an hour wait for the bus (if it doesn't arrive already full) plus whatever the wait at Queens Plaza will be.
This is nuts.
I dont think anyone posted this update yet-

In addition, due to debris on the track at the Church Avenue Station, the b and q trains are running on the d or n line in both directions between the DeKalb Avenue Station and the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station.
Please expect delays in service system wide at this time.
I've got the full updates on Second Ave. Sagas too. I'll be updating them as information becomes available.
re: #44, thisisstillme: When my N was stopped at Queensboro Plaza, there was a Manhattan bound 7 leaving across the platform; obviously I don't know what was happening once it left the station, but it wasn't staying put at the station.
I live in Clinton Hill, I work around Wall St, so I usually take the C. Naturally, that was not running, so I walked to Atlantic Ave to get any of the myriad trains there. None of the myriad trains were going to Manhattan. Some were just sitting in place for as long as one and a half hours (this was the 3). Finally, I gave up, and after sharing the good news with everyone on my walk home, I am now trying to enjoy my day off, by sitting in front of a fan in this paralyzing heat. Enjoy the day off, Brooklyn!
The ferry commute worked fine :-)
I just took the L from Lorimer to 8th Ave, so the L is running fine. Everything else seemed to be crazy though.
Looks like Bronx service is restored on the 4. Thanks for the update, now I'm heading off to work. Later, good luck everyone!
Anybody make it in from Forest Hills this morning?
This is hardly a snow day.
Took well over an hour to get to work from Pavonia/Newport on the PATH. Usually takes less then 20 minutes.
Re-routed to Hoboken, standing next to a clostraphobic woman, listening to people whine that they had been trying to get to work since 6am.
We made it, after many many sweaty underground delays.
AVOID THE TRAINS. WALK AT ALL COST.
Went to the subway, not running, went home and got my bicycle. I must have seen at least six trees down in the Ditmas Park area. Crazy!
if you're in williamsburg, stay home.
as of 9;30,
- L & G not running;
- busses not taking on more passengers;
- car services report 90+ minute wait.
- JMZ has a 'one in , one out' line to get into the station. it takes about 4 trains to come by to get into the station. another 6-10 to get into manhattan, where you can transfer to nothing.
i forget, is it 2007 or 1907?
MTA updated the service alerts a half an hour ago. Full updates still here if you can't get the MTA's site to load. These are the same ones Jen has in the image in this post.
The L is running fine in both directions. Why are some of you some fucking lazy. Go to work.
Other than it being VERY slow, hot, and crowded, I had no problems commuting from astoria (ditmars) and there seemed to be trains in all the stations on the N/W line.
Live shot from Broadway-Nassau:

Couldn't take my usual L from Jefferson, so I walked down to Central Ave J. Took that packed train to an even more packed Delancey St. Went over to the F uptown track, wasn't able to fit on the first G train (!), but I was able to catch the next F. 25 minute commute usually, today it was 2 hours.

Once again mta's main site is down, but the server on the tripplanner domain seems to continue to work.
if anything larger than a thunderstorm ever hits NYC we are all going to die.
Bus and train service Manhattan-bound from Greenpoint was super crowded, so I just biked to work downtown! Gosh, it's humid today.
...woops..I meant just the buses being crowded since the G and L weren't running.
re 62:
Hey, be fair: The subway ran *great* in 1907.
The L wasn't running when I was at the station a few minutes ago, but I don't care anymore, I'm taking the day off. I love minor NYC catastrophes, everybody just hangs out.

The Q was running on the D line at Atlantic Ave around 8:30 this morning. The conducters themselves didn't know which line it was traveling on, arguing over the intercom where the next stop was.
By the time we got to W4th, one conductor said "Next stop 34th" another said, "Last stop, stand clear of the doors, train is heading back to Brooklyn" Back and forth. "No, 34th" "No, brooklyn". Everyone kept sitting down, standing up. It was pretty comical (though, not at the time).
Eventually the conductor came out and got into the other car and shut off the train himself, arguing with the other conductor. Forced to take the C which was traveling on the A line.
What a mess.
God I love this city.
walked from 75th ave. to 71st continental since the mta site said the F wasn't running where i live. turns out there was no F running at all. they actually taped off the entrance to the 71st continental station so no one could get in. LIRR was running a train every 5 minutes from forest hills and it wasn't actually that bad...
The MTA better be working their asses off to get trains running to Coney for tomorrow's Daft Punk show.
dont be like curbed, take that STUPID map/image down
Its 2007 and the mta can't get trains to work when it rains.
EEEEEEEW. Gross out.
I usually take the B51 in from downtown Brooklyn to City Hall. Because of the subway outages, the buses (and they were running extra) were overcrowded and I wasn't going to squeeze on. So I walked in over the Brooklyn Bridge instead.
I wish we had a clothesline in this office so I could dry the sweat out of my shirt.
I agree with 78 "dont be like curbed, take that STUPID map/image down". It's not funny and it looks stupid.
that subway map cracked me up!
subway LOLcats? LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME
This happens almost EVERY time it rains. You'd think the MTA would figure out how to handle water by this point.
it is a good thing that no one in williamsburg actually gets up before noon. they would all be screwed!
Holy crap, check this out:
http://www.rhythmism.com/images/mobilism/1186576834_a.jpg
Not sure what station it is, but that's pretty ridiculous.
i live in elmhurst in queens. walked to the roosevelt ave stop to get the 7. if you can get to the 7 use that. it's a little slow at times but it'll get you into manhattan...
so our subway system cannot handle rain...
it rains, and the subway breaks. yo would think this is 1926.
"In addition to suspicious packages, watch out for terrorist carrying a garden hose.. because we just can't handle water!"
Thanks MTA for years of corruption and incompetence
I'm a little confused. How did so many people *get* to Times Square to try and catch a train? Do that many people really live around there? Gross/Weird.
All we need now is a Blackout.
MTA and the news is ridiculously slow.
When I checked at 9am there was still no mention at all that all the Queens trains (except the 7) were out of service. I knew someone that went at 8am and they were not running at that time. And then bus lines to get to the 7 stretched an entire manhattan block (the long side).
has anyone had any luck with the 4-5-6? is there any way of getting from brooklyn to the UES or should i even bother?
Commuter nightmare. Best thing to work from home with the AC. :)
The MTA info is outdated. While I just checked and it says the L is out, I just took it to work. Running every 2 minutes and fairly empty.
I'm at home in Park Slope. Waited forever for F and couldn't get in.
I came in from Forest Hills. Caught a (somewhat late) Q12 express bus at one of the first stops so I got a nice seat. Then a few stops on, there were about 100 folks in line. They didn't all make it onto the bus, but of course a fat lady sat next to me and removed her jacket, and the aisle was packed. We didn't bother going to the next stops but turned onto Queens Blvd instead. It took about 40 minutes to go 10 blocks to the LIE on-ramp. From there, it was pretty smooth sailing. Can't complain: seat and AC. Too bad the express buses are now so full of fattys though, people who take the bus cause they know they wouldn't fit into a subway seat fat.
Manhattan street traffic is bad, too.
Honking horns everywhere.
feh, ay luv ur lolcatz map! can we has some mor lolmeem pleez?
The technology must exist to keep this from happening every time it rains....
The next time the trains stop because of rain they should drag all those lazy, incompetent mta workers out on the streets and force them to shuttle people around in rickshaws.
I biked over the Brooklyn Bridge, but even THAT was insanely crowded. There were a line of about 15 bikers in a row, and we could barely move because of all the people walking into the bike lane.
Really makes me glad I don't have to wear a suit to work. I saw a lot of guys with drenched dress shirts & ties on.
People dissing the MTA for "not handling rain" are misinformed. On a completely dry day, they have to pump out 20 MILLION gallons of water to keep the subway system operational.
That image of the rats floating on barrels and a flooded subway station is from a Scientific American article of what would happen to the city if humanity left it: the subway flooding would happen on the 2nd day of our absence. So mother nature dumping a metric ass ton of water on us will usually overwhelm the pumping systems.
#89...I believe there is a little thing called the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Times Square.
MTA site has not been updated in a while - anyone know if the 4 5 6 is running, please?
NY1 just said the 4 5 6 is not running in Manhattan, but I don't know what their source it.
any one have any success on any line getting to Metro Tech, DeKalb or B. Hall?
I took a Q running on the local R track up to 23rd about an hour ago. It was packed but running.
#102 is right. When you build anything underground you have to contend with groundwater. Add in a severe thunderstorm and the system can get overwhelmed. And this sort of this doesn't happen every time it rain.
#102,
There is always a solution.
The people that apologize for the MTA don't make sense to me.
The public transportation system should be the #1 priority for the city.
They are not doing us a favor by providing mass transport. Without it, the economy is seriously damaged. The city runs by the transportation system.
It is one of the few things in life that new yorkers are indeed entitled to!
Life, Liberty, and a fully functional B Train!
Guest [101], sorry about that, I was one of the pedestrians darting into the bike lanes on occasion. I tried to look beforehand, but I had to get around some of the slow walkers or I'd STILL be on that bridge.
I also took the L train from Grand Street to Union Sq. at 9:45 this morning. Train was empty, but running. I even missed one, but the next one came within 2 minutes.
I have no idea why they are saying it's not running. I asked the guy in the booth and he said the train had been running fine for the last 20 minutes or so.
@77: I know that's right!!
Why is it when shit like this happens that pedestrians feel they have the God given right to take over a bike lane? There are more people biking to work when this shit happens and they need that bike lane. I only clocked three people while riding over the Brooklyn Bridge this morning. Feels good too!
#108,
There is trouble on the B and C nearly every time the is significant train.
It happens VERY often
Thanks for the 4 5 6 update - what about the 1 2 3?
It looks like the 1 might be running (mta site says it is NOT running between 14th st and south ferry, so I guess it must be running from the bronx to 14th?
It's just not urgent for me to get to work today and I don't feel like wandering around for nothing.
Wait a minute. A tornado? In Brooklyn? Um, if that were actually to happen in such a densely populated place, I have a feeling the damage would be a lot more than some downed trees and commuter chaos. You'd think those transplants from Iowa and Kansas would know better!
Just tried to take the 4/5 from Fulton Street - it's only running one stop to Brooklyn Bridge - waited about an hour for buses, but none had room...and cabs, fucking forget it...I think I'm calling in today...
It's time to make it official - the month of August is now known as Monsoon Season.
Next - and this is a huge leap of faith - maybe the MTA will get it together with an official plan of how to handle the increasingly regular wash outs that our new weather pattern is throwing at us. So far it seems that they are operating without any plan other then -- Just Shut It Down.
I took my car for its annual inspection to a brooklyn fourth ave auto shop this norning... was turned away as the shop was totally flooded. Apparently this happens all the time all along fourth ave everytime it rains. Guess the city needs to figure things out too.... feel sorry for all those high end condos that will have this as an ongoing issue.
#108- No, this happens to half the lines every time it rains. And there's always going to be inclimintal weather in NYC, year round, every year. It is fucking ridiculous that the MTA does not know how to handle or learn from a regular occurrence any better each time it happens.
It is not enough to expect paying customers to "deal with it." A hurricane, fine. An earthquake (however unlikely), fine. But a heavy rain? Give me a break.

As usual I got on my bike in Washington Heights, and rode the greenway down to midtown, passing the cars on the westside highway the whole way. I arrived, dry, happy and ready to fill in for my collegues who were stuck underground because they have to rely on an antiquated MTA!
A bike is your only defense against bloated, disfunctional, and unaccoutable city agencies!
[Insert random complaining about an infrastructure I don't understand]
New service updates as of 11:15 are available at Second Ave. Sagas.
the fact that the MTA can't even handle the increase in traffic to their website is telling
Yes...a bike would be nice, but what about those of us who live 80-90 blocks from where we work? Doesn't work out too well for us.
#122
The only thing we have to understand is that it is broken and does no have to be
[121], you definitely have the right idea. Wish I had someplace to put my bike here at work, though with all the coworkers who haven't made it in at all, there's a lot more room than I realized!
ride a bike!
ride a bike!
ride a bike!
yahoo!!!!!
Does anyone know if Brooklyn landline phone service is down?
i understand the flooding problem, but what i don't understand is how they couldn't get the buses running any better.
i managed to catch a 4 from borough hall to fulton at about 8:50am, and was informed the A was running which i planned to take to 42nd and then walk to my work. obviously the A was down, so i went to the nearest bus stop only to see about 300 people, not in a line, waiting for a bus that wasn't coming.
at this point, there's only one solution for any person with a brain. look around you, find 3 people going near your work, and SPLIT A TAXI. from fulton to 40th and 6th it cost us $4 each.
a bike in the summer... not all of us can show up to work drenched in sweat and stinking for the rest of the day
#129 - I'm in Bay Ridge and my phone service is fine.
Took me 2 hours to get from Williamsburg to Grand Central... Normally takes 25-35 minutes. Took a bus to the JMZ, the M to Canal, then no trains from Canal. Buses were either not coming or so full they just drove right by. Taxis were all full too. Called my work's car service and they said it'd take them 40 minutes to come pick me up. Ended up walking up to 3rd & 15th then hitching a ride from a friend of a friend who was driving. Total insanity.
congestion pricing will solve all!
I live in Woodside between the Northen Blvd stop on the GRV and the Woodside stop on the trusty 7.
Got to the GRV, there was smoke coming out of the grates a long the street. Smelled really bad, like and electrical fire, cause there was an Electrical fire at the Northern Blvd stop!
So I walked to the 7. It was running fine, just packed.
ah, but the sweat gives you that "peppermint patty sensation" when you get into an airconditioned space!
I am number 121,
Yes its true I was sweaty when I arrived on my bike, after riding 125 blocks in 100 degrees humidity. But I changed my clothes when I got here, and was on the desk at my professional public service position at 9am when we opened, because I was the only one here.
On a normal day, this commute door to door takes less time than the A train, on a 3 speed bike. Today it took 2 hours less. And you know what, I arrive the same sweaty mess when I take the train in the summer, but dont have an excuse to change my clothes.
well #143, you can thank Sheldon Silver for not letting the congestion pricing plan to progress. You can also thank him for stalling previous plans for the 2nd ave. subway.
He is the prime example of a status quo, do nothing, career politican and should be out of a job
What I don't understand is why people don't just stay home. Or why employers won't understand if people can't get in to work. Consider it a snow day. Nature wins. Sorry, we can't overcome everything in a half hour, and it's arrogant to think we can.
#129, I talked to someone in Brooklyn on a landline a couple of hours ago.
will Metro-North be be letting people use the train from 125st to Grand Central? since the 4/5/6 is down.
"what i don't understand is how they couldn't get the buses running any better"
MTA workers have to get to work too...
All you BIKE PEOPLE...STFU PLEASE
How many people do you think that is a realistic solution for? How many parents have to take young children to school (and are afraid of city streets with a young child on a bike)? How many people don't have room in their tiny apartments to store a bike? How many people are too old or don't feel comfortable riding on city streets? You do what you have to but please leave your holier than thou (aka can't put yourself in anyone else's shoes) attitude at the door...
I meant 134!
-138
the bike riders need to get off their self-righteous rants. i am an avid cyclist. however i don't bike to work for a myriad of reasons. 1.) it's too dangerous to ride through Midtown at 8am. 2.) I actually wear a suit to work and need to appear presentable. A lot of people would ride a bike to work if they didn't have these two problems. Just because you get to wear jeans and t-shirts everyday at your slack-ass job doesn't mean you have a right to shit all over everyone else.
As for pedestrians coming into the bike lanes on the bridge, what the hell did you expect?!?!
"Wah wah wah, my precious bike lane was blocked by the thousands of subway commuters who were stranded all over the city, waaaaah!"
Have some sympathy for people other than yourselves.
riddle me this.
I signed up for the MTA weekly alert emails
they have the power to email everyone on that list if need be
WHY OH WHY cant they email or send a text msg when the trains ARENT running?
they have the power
they have the technology
they are just lazy!
Now every idiot with an internet connection thinks he/she knows everything there is to know about mass transit and civil enginering. Sometimes tunnels flood people! If they didn't, there wouldn't already be pumps down there working 24/7.
And to all of you snarky bike riders, let's see how hard you would have been laughing at the cars if it were still raining at 9 AM.
to #102 & #108: 1st, I thought it was 13 million gallons/day (not 20); 2nd, perhaps that means that we need to somehow improve the pumping capacity in the tunnels and not simply excuse it considering that this does actually happen on a frequent basis, though not usually so widespread.
#145, you forgot to add dumb, incompetent, and (at higher levels) corrupt
look at the street traffic.
You think drivers will yield to buses? Make dedicated emergency bus lanes when this happens. ticket drivers that violate the lane because this is an emergency. One mode of transport is gone and there's only surface transit. there's still non-stop honking out my window.
This is ridiculous, no reason why this should happen every freakin time and we just take it up the ass every time.
the latest alert seems to suggest the 4-5 are running in the city but i've heard otherwise? can anyone confirm/deny?
BTW, just looking over the news outlets, I thought there is a disproportionate hysteria over the commute. What about people's homes, cars and other property being damaged?
#146
actually, i LOVES riding in the rain!!!
signed,
#'s 128 and 136
Is anyone having service issues with AT&T? I'm in Windsor Terrace and my phone keeps going from 2 bars to nothing at all.
[145], I wondered the same thing. If the MTA can email me every Friday about service disruptions over the weekend, why couldn't they email me this morning to let me know that there were service disruptions today?
As for the buses, I have to figure that there are only so many of them available, and they didn't have enough available buses and drivers to fully compensate for the excess demand.
"What I don't understand is why people don't just stay home. Or why employers won't understand if people can't get in to work. Consider it a snow day. Nature wins. Sorry, we can't overcome everything in a half hour, and it's arrogant to think we can."
Not everyone can work from home, and not everyone can take a day off.
We've got updates at 11:56 a.m. on the service.
#119, I totally agree. It's a fucking rainstorm, not a nuclear bomb or a volcano. It's rain. It happens a lot. Surely the most-ridden subway system in the world should be able to figure out a way to deal with a lot of rain. And yeah, I think it's totally insane that they want to raise fares on us again. I think X million people paying roughly $4 a day ought to be able to deal with the problem.
Does anyone know the best person to write to to demand better service?
Wow, that commute sucked. Me and the Mrs was on the "Express" Bus from 7:30 to 11:30...
Our Bus had a revolt with people freaking out demanding to be let off for a Bathroom Break.
The Underpass on Queens Blvd being flooded was the problem for us.
This is why there are anti-monopoly laws.
When there is no competition, the quality of service and innovation in any business crumbles.
This is why socialism doesn't work.
I'm not saying that it would be easy to have competition in the nyc transit system. It's probably not workable. But nonetheless, that is why the entire system is broken and thy still want to raise fares.
Due to the fact that the MTA has no rival, it is the job of the city to make damn sure that the subway system is top notch... but they have not done so.
"Thank you for riding the MTA, New York city transit.... like you have a choice"
you do have options.
its called a car.
have fun getting anywhere today.
oooooooh better yet get a helicopter
#157, presumably the MTA would need to spend lots of money to make the system more rain proof. Where will that money come from if they don't raise fares?
Not everyone stays home because not everyone is on a salary, and maybe that day of work is important. So please stop with the "why don't you just stay home?" Of course people would like to stay home, but sometimes that is just not an option.
Also, it is not defending the subway to acknowledge how much water they pump out on dry days. It is important for people to know that it's not JUST the rainwater that they're dealing with.
This is a little late, since most trains seem to be running better now, but re: Brooklyn to the UES, I took the bus downtown and caught the F from Jay St to 63rd/Lex. It was incredibly slow (took about 2 hours total) but no diversions/rerouting or anything.
Just wanted to share since I'd heard rumors the F wasn't running at all. It is running, though when I got off at 63rd/Lex the conductor was announcing there would be extensive delays in Queens.
F train in Brooklyn is running. I picked it up at Fort Hamilton (after a handy call to Crossroads Cafe) and took it to Jay Street to catch the A train. Seems normal, except for the sludge of water at Broadway/Nassau, yech.
better yet, where were the "shuttle buses" taking the place of suspended train lines. like MTA usually does when it doesn't run the L train on weekends.
a car in manhattan is NOT an option
161,
this is what they would like you to believe. They have mis-allocated millions of dollars over the years due to incompetence and corruption... and politics. That is why there is cause for anger.
Also, most of the money for projects comes from local allocations.... public funds.
I strongly agree that we should have congestion pricing, but garbage local politicians like sheldon silver are obstructionist for any type of change at all. It's all because the public does not take an active enough role in knowing the facts
Hot map, Zach!
Nice job.
dude! no more flud on the map??!!
wtf!
Hey good point #35 - those two guys the other day with their homemade sub were visionaries, as it turns out. And like all true visionaries, they're being crushed by the man!
"Yes...a bike would be nice, but what about those of us who live 80-90 blocks from where we work? Doesn't work out too well for us."
Bullshit. It takes less than an hour to bike 80 - 90 blocks which is only 4 - 5 miles. Get off your fat ass.
"a bike in the summer... not all of us can show up to work drenched in sweat and stinking for the rest of the day"
Bullshit. Get there early and give your self a little wipe down and spray yourself with cologne/perfume. No one will know the difference.
"How many people don't have room in their tiny apartments to store a bike?"
They have things called bike racks, they also make fold up bikes.
"How many people are too old or don't feel comfortable riding on city streets?"
No, but they feel comfortable walking like zombies on the streets. You should ask how many are lazy fatasses, I think that will get more replies.
"i am an avid cyclist. however i don't bike to work for a myriad of reasons. 1.) it's too dangerous to ride through Midtown at 8am. 2.) I actually wear a suit to work and need to appear presentable. A lot of people would ride a bike to work if they didn't have these two problems. Just because you get to wear jeans and t-shirts everyday at your slack-ass job doesn't mean you have a right to shit all over everyone else."
You could always change at work. Too afraid of midtown traffic? Do this city a favor and move you spandex/lycra wearing dumbass.
"Have some sympathy for people other than yourselves."
Bullshit. No vehicle has one bit of sympathy or respect for bicyclists, no pedestrian has one inch of sympathy for bicyclists, they get none from us!
Oh, and socialism does work, but not in a place where you can be as greedy as you want to be!
HAHAHAHAHA, I take the bus to work, suckas!
Biked in from Forest Hills to Wall Street. No big deal. I do it pretty much year round. Brooklyn Bridge was pretty crowded and lots of very angry people.
I thought this is a Manhattan/Billyburg blog, who cares about the rest of NYC?!
nice empathy for your fellow humans, Reality Czech!
Reality Czech is a moron
Enough with the bike bragging! Some people don't feel comfortable on bikes, get over it!
Storm Damage in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn 8/08/07:

Shit happens. But, I can't deal with assholes who try to force their way into already over-crowded subways - especially when it's so freakin' hot out.
If it's that important for you not to be late, get up earlier or take a cab on days like this.
i cant figure out why all of the stranded commuters didn't do what i did. get off the bus / train, go to the nearest starbucks. power up your company provided laptop, connect to starbucks wifi internet, then vpn into your company network and work just like you were at your desk. seems so easy and logical. it is a nice, air conditioned atmosphere with food, drinks and a clean bathroom. it's weird that everyone else in the city is not doing this.
how did this storm not wake me up last night? I barely knew it was raining
@181: Please tell me you're being sarcastic...
181,
because great numbers of people have jobs that cannot be accomplished simply by sitting in front of the computer
No, you're a guest and a moron. Suck it, because you like it.
Hey Reality Czech - do you realize you sound like a self-righteous prick?
Do us fellow cyclists (and fellow Czechs) a favor and lighten up.
mike D. yes, totally being sarcastic. starbucks solution worked for me b/c i have a laptop and a job where i can get a good amount of work done on email, IM and cell phone. it worked for me and probably a small percent of others in the city today.... but, just like those who suggest riding a bike is the answer, it's not really practical for the masses... (181)
Any update on the Metro North service on the harlem line?
incredible repartee Reality &^#@!
Wish I knew this before I waited for the R in Brooklyn. I reverse commute (I work on L.I.) and it was still hellish. B63's up 5th Ave were jam packed and all the traffic made walking faster anyway. Once I was on it, the trains were packed with people trying to get from Flatbush to Penn Station. Had to deal with a tall guy holding the pole above my head with B.O.
There's nothing quite like a brisk walk on a hot and humid day to really make you wish you worked at home.
East Harlem to DUMBO in one hour on the bike.
so are you being sarcastic or not?
what kind of work do you do? without being overly complicated.
Fantastic...no 4/5 from Fulton street...so I go and try to wait for an M1 bus for two hours and the only ones that come are too crowded to get on...so I call work and let them know. Guess what, they're writing me up (I'm a college student, so this is a retail gig) for failure to show up...after I called them several times earlier explaining the situation. Rich Bitch Boss from who comes in from Westchester says "Take a cab"...right, what part of college student doesn't she get...I don't have $20+ for a cab ride (I live pretty far from work). So I'm writing a nice, big letter to the HR department right now...fucking retards.
You know if everyone was as smart as you and biked, RealityCzech, then you would be stuck in a bike jam! And some of us fatasses WALK instead of bike. How lazy of us.
Also, some people's jobs think it's "unprofessional" to show up in non-work clothes or with hair wet with sweat.
More people walk when this happens too, that's why they take over the bike lanes. Pedestrians will ALWAYS have the right of way in this city (even though they legally have it EVERYWHERE), so get off your high horse (or bicycle) and deal with it.
@181/187: I have had jobs before where I could have done the same thing. Not so much these days. Just wanted to make sure you remembered "how the other half lives."
#191, you sound sexy.
Hey bike hippie, we can all smell you, we're just too professional to SAY ANYTHING.
I get just as sweaty standing in the crush on the L and Q platforms as I do humping my bike over the Williamsburg Bridge. The bike gets me there just as fast on the subway's best day, and HOURS faster on a day like today. The MTA monopoly can go F*@K itself.
191 here. oh yeah, I totally rolled into DUMBO drenched in sweat. I work at a gallery which is closed today, so I get it that an hour bike ride for a suited person is just not in the cards.
I know how the other half lives, I've been both halves.
Yes, ride a bike in the city and risk being run over by a taxi, or better yet, getting squashed underneath a bus. The mayor should recommend this route for all NYers!
191/199 - I was totally serious... you sound like a man with a fabulous brand-new hardwood floor. Call me!
what about buses, are they still packed? i'm going to take the m101 or m103 from grand central downtown
It's all well and good that there's an option to hide guest posts, but what this forum really needs is an option to hide Reality Czech's posts.
90 degree weather, air quality poisonous, sure I'll ride a bike. Sounds like a great idea.
Bicyclists should be forced to use the Manhattan bridge.
#205, why?
The MTA issued an update at 2:20. Things are slowly getting back to normal.
By the way, that modified subway map showing only areas of lines with active service is great. The MTA should publish those for weekend disruptions as well.
I mean, the LOLcats version of the map was great too, but in a different way.
Does anyone have any sense of how accurate and reliable the MTA updates are? Are the trains they say are now working actually working?
yeah, would have been great to have a few hundred thousand extra stranded riders thanks to the congestion pricing... what a joke. and on top of all this they want to raise the fares?
Interesting that the G train is listed as suspended between Court Square and 4th Avenue, given that it's not even supposed to run as far as 4th Avenue.
Most of you guests are fat assed jerk-offs who are ruining America but are too blind to know it. Yeah, I'm self-righteous because I know better than you dumbass. Wake up. No, I will not lighten up and JMH suck it you turd.
210, that doesn't make any sense. They simply could have chosen to pay the 8 bucks and drive in today. Or they would not have attempted it at all.
Also, the system would have already been improved from the extra revenue. (if used properly , of course)
did reality czech seriously just try to insult somebody by calling them a "guest"
you weren't invited to comment here, you took the extra minute to register. big. fucking. deal.
I got off the A at 125 after taking it from 181, looked for a cab or a bus then went back to 181, got my bike and rode in. Yes, it was hot and nasty, and a headwind the whole way. But fun.
What I find frustrating with the MTA is that there seems to be no protocol in place for days like today. Or, if there is a protocol, it's a poorly executed one. I'd have imagined a command-central post, where each station calls in with hourly updates. Command-central makes calls on which lines do what, call stations back. Employees at the stations are posted at the ENTRANCES and update commuters on the situation with real information. Even if I couldn't get to work, at least I'd know which trains/buses were actually running!
Instead, I got a different answer from every MTA employee I spoke to. I know they're trying their best, but since heavy rainfalls seem common enough in this city, and the subway system is so widely used, I'm surprised that MTA leadership hasn't come up with a better way.
and be prepared to pay more for that fantastic bullshit soon enough...
Yeah, I'm self-righteous
OK, just so you're aware of it.
Probably F0-F1 (mod Fujita)
Spoke with my Mom this AM, lives near 61st & 6th.
She was down the basement, checking for flooding.
Had the basement door to backyard open.
Around 6AM she heard the "Freight Train" sound rolling over the house her words, not mine.
Took her & my sister's full weight to push the door shut.
Her house OK, one broken window from a "twig", furniture blown off the back porch. Sections ripped off the Storage place on 63rd & 6th & damaged surrounding buildings.
Be interesting to see the pattern of the fallen trees, differing angles of fall may indicate rotation, therefore tornado.

I was not aware jeans and a t-shirt indicated "slack ass job." The irony is my work brings in the money so you number crunching chimps in the cubicles can continue what you do...
"This is why socialism doesn't work."
Yea, um city run transit systems aren't socialist. In fact, they're the standard. Idiot.
if you had the most basic reading comprehension, you might be able to understand the context of that statement. I did not call the transit system socialist. I was comparing the lack of competition..... bigger idiot
point is, Paul, if there was competition, the service would be better. This is obviously hard-impossible to accomplish in New York, but that point was stated in the post you are referring to
Here's a look at socialism: hockey, basketball and football have a socialist system where each team has a salary cap, baseball doesn't.
Hockey has parity, basketball has parity, football has parity, baseball has the NY Yankees spending as much as they want because they can just raise ticket prices next year.
Got it?
Just got through reading thru the last 200+ posts.
Some folks just trying to share info, lots of the usual mass transiters, Bike Nazis, Starbucks Wi-Fi'ers etc. After >200 posts, nobody said it's Al Sharpton's or W's fault? Come on, guys you're gettin lazy here!
I hereby sentence all all of the malcontents to the following (with a special place reserved for anybody with the name reality in their tag):
You win!
You get a one-way ticket to the outskirts of Mumbai, where you can sit on a roof surrounded by 3 meters of water watching corpses float by. That's what's happening right now in the world.
And you won't have to worry about anyone in your precious "bike lane", but you might have trouble getting a good Wifi connection, and I don't hink you'll be able to get your favorite "juicy syrup" for your Latte. But feel free to complain (in a loud and strident voice). Those surrounding you on that rooftop only speak Hindi.
Ah, I revel in that vision!
Get some perspective. Have some compassion.
It could be much worse.
Salaam Namaste!
Dadoc
So what Nick S. You registered and your are a moron of previously unknown proportions. Suck it cause you love it.
Some more updates from the MTA and lots of finger-pointing.
The only thing to be "gotten" from your post are that you are a pinhead
that was for this Reality Czech dolt
-228
- Though the idea of biking through midtown traffic is a bit harrowing to those of us who are just not so good at it, i'd certainly try to get over it..... Iiiiiiif i wasn't commuting from NJ for the summer. So, yeh, biking is not an option for everyone.
- Reality Czech... your comparison of economies to the way sports leagues work is so asinine it's almost adorable. A salary cap does not equate to socialism. Nor does it equate to parity (parity in the NBA? really????). There COULD be more ECONOMIC parity in baseball even without the salary cap... some teams/owners are just too cheap. And where did those ridiculous salary numbers come from anyway? Oh right, the players union....
Nor does money equate to success/happiness (particularly in sports. When was the last time the Yankees won a championship? And look at the random teams which have won or contended for the last couple).
- "Suck it cause you love it" ....real classy sign off you got going there. I can tell Reality Czech is an individual who has put a lot of thought into things......
Hockey has parity, basketball has parity, football has parity, baseball has the NY Yankees spending as much as they want because they can just raise ticket prices next year.
I guess that explains the Patriots winning 3 of the last 6 Super Bowls?
Or Spurs winning 3 out of the last 5 NBA titles and the Spurs and Lakers sharing 7 of the last nine.
And the... six different world series champions since the Yankee Dynasty ended.
I give your troll a B+. Extra points for using sports to make a completely incorrect analogy and for ignoring the fact that most people don't want to spend all day smelling like a shady strip club mixed with BO. Well played.
hey 196 - an hour from e. harlem to dumbo is sexy?
try wash hts/inwood to battery park in 35 mins!
call me.
Does anyone know what's going on with the Ronkonkoma line eastbound (LIRR)? They are not posting any delays, but I find that hard to believe...
Yes T Kaisen, Parity is not measured by who wins the championship, but by which teams have a chance in hell of getting there. In baseball it's always the same teams. In hockey, basketball or football, any team can make the playoffs. The better team has won each time. Unfortunatley, for a Yankee lover like yourself, you may eventually learn that you can't buy a championship.
CoOOoOol LeTz TuRRRrrN THis INTO a Sp0rtZ ThReAD!!!!!
REALITY CZECH - EAT MY NUTZ!!!!!!!
the only people that use sports analogies for any comparison are slack-jawed simpletons...
ITS NOT APPLICABLE OR RELEVANT!
I like how the MTA says people should stagger their work hours.
Yeah, I'll just get in touch with all the other commuters and we'll work out a schedule.
According to the MTA's site, last updated at 4:40 there is no R service to Astoria-Ditmars Blvd... the R doesn't go there. The screen capture above has what I assume is the correct information.
okay, back to the matter at hand people.
Can anyone tell me about the 4,5,6 going uptown?
I'm about to try and go home.
thanks!
let me clarify, I know the 4,5,6 is running, but how insane is it?
Here's some more coverage of the storm, from Bay Ridge:
