Spitzer's Scandal Rolls On

2007_08_ethicstoday.jpgGovernor Spitzer's ethics woes went to the national stage yesterday when the Today show ran a segment (see it here) about the mess that included the on-screen caption "Spitzer Scandal." Sure, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office did not find any law-breaking by Spitzer's aides, just dirty tricks-ing by way of using the state police to discredit Spitzer's main Albany rival, State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.

Though Spitzer has maintained he had no idea that his staffers were planning such things, the Today segment made him look pretty bad. Bruno was even interviewed in the segment - and he looked like the grandfatherly victim in the whole mess! If only Today show viewers knew how screwy Albany really was.

Of course, Troopergate/ Choppergate/ Brunogate does get more murky: Yesterday, the Post revealed that Spitzer staffers may have emailed the governor from their private email accounts - and that those emails were not included in correspondence submitted to Cuomo or the state inspector general during investigations. Some Spitzer staffers, including suspended communications director Darren Dopp and secretary Richard Baum (both cited in the attorney general's report for their roles in trying to bring down Bruno) as well as Spitzer's spokeswoman and counsel, had "personal BlackBerrys or ones paid for by Mr. Spitzer’s campaign account," according to the Times. Naturally, now Bruno wants those emails to be turned over. This is totally why Corzine doesn't email anymore!

As for other Spitzer doings, the Sun reports that Spitzer is giving a 15-page, single-spaced speech at the Chautaugua Institution today and that it is "expected to draw a parallel between America's historical struggles against communism and terrorism and his own battles with the Legislature as leader of New York." (Please, someone tape this!) Yesterday, Spitzer blogged at DailyKos to congratulate them on YearlyKos - no mention of his Albany issues.

Finally, a website explaining how Spitzer financed his attorney general campaigns, The Spitzer File, launched. The Politicker reveals the creator is Michael Caputo, "former campaign aide to George H.W. Bush and public relations buddy of Republican operative Roger Stone."

I am so glad I didn't vote for Spitzer the bully.

This is what gets me the most about this: the situation makes Bruno look like a saint when folks know he's a sinner. (And in the spirit of bi-partisanship, Silver is just as bad as Bruno.)

Unfreakingbelievable.

Nine months after the elections and nothing has changed in Albany or DC. The Democrats made such a stink about the wiretapping and then they voted to make legal essentially the same program. I hope they don't actually wonder why their approval rating is lower than the President's.

Well this is starting to prove the truth about politicians - they are the last people who should be elected to any office.

eliot spitzer is allowed to play a little dirty in a dirty political sphere such as albany.

that said, to say that you didn't vote for spitzer "the bully" is outing yourself, and that's a bit pathetic. it was pretty much spitzer, suozzi (come ON!) or not voting. you either threw away your vote or let it expire. well done.

Not voting between a douche and a turd is making a choice.

I wanted so badly to believe in Spitzer. I was acquainted with him during his heyday as the Enforcer, and during his run for Governor. I can't really reveal all that much, but I will say that it became very clear to me that his main priority was and is politics, image, and smearing his enemies by whatever means necessary. I don't think any of this makes Bruno look like a saint, it just makes Spitzer look as bad as the rest of them - which is something I've known about him for a long time. He and his people will do whatever they can to frighten and destroy the reputation of those he deems as a threat...and I'm not talking about just other politicians, I'm talking about "little" people in his circles that couldn't harm him even if they tried.

So I have to admit, I am gloating a little to see his deeds brought to light.

The Republican Noise Machine is cranking into high gear over Spitzer, who is seen as a potential presidential candidate, and a serious nationwide threat to Republicans. They need to kick up as much dust now for use later. That's why characters like Caputo showing up making "Swift Boat" like websites. They're scared and they're trying to take him down as fast as possible on any grounds they can stir up.

I look forward to hearing the results of the ethics investigation. John Feerick, the Chairman of the State Ethics Commission, is beyond reproach. Bruno's rantings and ravings are the last thing anyone should pay any attention to.

Actually-noone but Bruno has said anything-it's the press that is pushing for an inquiry-Why ?SPITZER IS A CROOK.

My money is this Caputo guy is dirty. He's all over the Web. Check this random weirdness. Jeff Goldblum played him in a movie?? Huh??
