Pencil This In

2007_08_arts_dawn.jpgMOVIE: It's certainly not the kind of night for an outdoor movie, so we suggest sitting in the cool a/c and watching the 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. "Gone is the possibility of mankind’s dominance in this sequel to Night of the Living Dead; the zombies are in control now, with a group of AWOL soldiers and TV producers on the run from the staggering hordes. A deserted shopping mall offers a safe hideout, as well as the setup for Romero’s savage satire on consumer culture." The early screening will be introduced by producer Richard Rubenstein, more info here.

Another King Vidor directed film is playing tonight, and if you really want to be outdoors this eve...this is the place. This time his adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead will be on the big screen. Whether or not you're a fan of Objectivism, there's a good story here. Gary Cooper plays the brilliant, young architect Howard Roark who white-knuckles on to his artistic integrity at all cost - and Patricia Neal plays his counterpoint, Dominique Francon.

A conversation with filmmaker Caspar Stracke and a screening of his 12-minute film No Damage will follow the main event. He created the short from fragments of over 80 different feature and documentary films showing the architecture of New York City.

Sunset // The Elevated Acre [55 Water St] // Free

THEATER: With temperatures kicking up toward the 100 degree mark, the Dixon Place HOT! Festival seems timelier than ever. Tonight, for one night only,Virginian author Peter Neofotis is in town and will be performing Queer Ducks in Concord, VA. As this is Dixon Place, the home of avant-garde, sexually-charged performance art, it’s only natural that Neofotis’s tales involve a “mixture of sodomy, gypsies, and the blessedly different.” - John Del Signore

8pm // Dixon Place [258 Bowery, 2nd Floor] // Tickets cost $15.

MUSIC: Silent Barn can get a little hot, even when it's not humid like today, but we're willing to sweat it out for tonight's show. Ill Ease, Ninetynine, The Epochs and Vivian Girls take the stage. They tell us to "stick around till the end for a special performance by PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ !! Now w/ Shah from Ex Models on guitar!"

8pm // Silent Barn [915 Wyckoff Ave] // $7

Tonight Universes take over Tompkins Square Park. Described as "an urban ensemble that could only have formed in New York City, Universes combines poetry and political activism, hip-hop and jazz, minute social observations and expansive philosophical themes for a unique theater experience." Tonight they perform Live From The Edge, a "celebration of communal creation, tracing the evolution of a culture’s poetic language from nursery rhymes to hip-hop flow."

8 to 10pm // Tompkins Square Park // Free

EVENT: You never know what you'll get at an Andrew W.K. performance. This past weekend he rocked the Highline, in the past he's given motivational seminars. Tonight he'll be at the Peoples Improv Theater for some...improv? We're actually not too sure, but we hear it'll be a duet with Sightings vocalist/guitarist Mark Morgan. More info here.

8pm // PIT [154 W 29th St] // $10
