Giuliani's Daughter Must Really Hate Him

2007_08_barackrudy.jpg

Former mayor Rudy Giuliani may have participated in a Republican debate last night, but all anyone wants to talk about is how his possibly estranged daughter and incoming Harvard freshman Caroline joined a Barack Obama group on Facebook, as reported by Slate. Slate explained that "she withdrew from the Obama group at 6 a.m. Monday, after Slate sent her an inquiry about it." The article's author, Lucy Morrow Caldwell, was able to see Caroline Giuliani's profile because she is a Harvard student.

However, a spokewoman for Caroline Giuliani, who goes by "Caroline Hanover," explains her client's involvement in the group: "Before the presidential campaign got underway, Caroline added herself to a list on Facebook as an expression of interest in certain principles. It was not intended as an indication of support in a presidential campaign and she has removed it. Caroline is not commenting on the 2008 election."

Since his re-marriage to Judi Nathan, Rudy Giuliani and his children had not been very close. The Republican presidential wanna-be was a quiet presence at his daughter's graduation: He sat in the back, while her brother Andrew, mother Donna Hanover, and stepfather sat in the front. And Rudy found out Caroline was accepted into Harvard by reading it in the Daily News.

More Rudy fun: This morning, he was at a Wal-Mart in Iowa, buying granola bars, talking A-Rod, and possibly parking in the fire lane.

Update: Rubenstein Communications sent out this alert with the comments of Dr. Alan Hilfer, "pediatric psychologist and Director of Psychology at Maimonides Medical Center in New York" (who is available for comment):

“In the world that an incoming college Freshman lives in, a declaration on facebook is a very public action,” says Dr. Hilfer. “ In public families, particularly those in the political world it is understood that their differences will be kept private. Caroline Giuliani obviously has very significant issues of anger directed towards her father.”

“For any parent a public embarrassment is humbling. For a candidate seeking to develop their credentials in the area of family values this could be devastating, since Mr. Giuliani’s son, Andrew has previously said that he and his sister have issues with the way their father treated their mother in the final months of their marriage and in the subsequent divorce.”
Nice to have the professionals confirm exactly what we were thinking. Now, to track down Andrew Giuliani's Facebook page!

Good For you sweet caroline.
kick your dad in the nads.

user-pic

Hmmm... And she's also looking for "random play." Verrrrry interesting.

not only is she looking for "random play" but she's also looking for "anything she can get"!!

user-pic

The continued obsession with Giuliani's personal life continues but silence on Clinton. I know Hillary is not really a New Yorker but she does represent us in the Senate. You guys don't even cover the fluff pieces that the Times runs on Hillary or Bill or even last week's fluff job on Chelsea. Chelsea has moved on from McKinsey to work at a hedge fund. Bill "consults" for a fund now too.

Goes to show you someone in the family has brains.

user-pic

Hey Reality Czech, you don't have to post every inane thought that comes into your head. Get a job and/or a life. You obviously have neither since you have "commented" on just about every story, every day.

user-pic

Good ol' conservative family values.

user-pic

She can probably get any guy in Harvard.
what's the "poke her" reference under the photo?

user-pic

that's because number 4 chelsea ain't as hot as caroline.

user-pic

Good ol' conservative family values.

What does that have to do with anything? Is Giuliani running as a family values candidate?

user-pic

Rudy would probably be more upset if she joined a David Wright group.

This is my job you guest asshole.

user-pic

"poke her" is just a facebook reference.

#8, 'pokes' are a weird facebook thing, you can virtually poke someone to let you know you're thinking about them or whatnot.

#6, isn't that what the comments section is for??

I know her and she hates him.

user-pic

I thought MY job was to post on Gothamist every day?
I try to do my best to help gothamist get more traffic and google hits.

user-pic

if she hates him then I have something in common with her. I feel so special.

Man, does he have any children who don't hate his guts? Given the choice, I wouldn't want his life despite his money.

user-pic

This is my job you guest asshole.

Really? Namecalling and profanity is hardly professional.

user-pic

What did Giuliani do to these kids besides leave their mother? Half the people I know are children of divorce and most of them managed to stay balanced and maintain a relationship with the more offending of the two parents. My advice to his kids is grow the fuck up and don't act out in public. You didn't see Chelsea Clinton air the family dirty laundry.

She looks more like Donna than Rudy. She must thank God for that every single day.

user-pic

Giulani's kids have a bad case of "You hurt mommy so we hate you" syndrome.

user-pic

I think you're right, [4].

Also, LOL, [13].

user-pic

Come to think of it. Will Giulani's brats be invited to his inauguration? Maybe they and Donna can seethe for four or eight years. That'd be fun.

user-pic

#25 are you the same jmh that posts on elynah?

user-pic

[22] I can't imagine that it's easy to have Giuliani for a dad. It seems like it's more than just leaving their mom if he's not showing up at his daughter's school events, etc.

user-pic

I get that it's a political family and all, but I think it's pretty fucked up that if Caroline dares express her own political views, it must be because she has 'anger issues against her father'. Maybe she just wants to support a candidate who shares her values.

22, 24: It goes rather beyond "hurting mommy" when the guy informs his family at a press conference that he's separating from his wife. That's going to hurt the kids, too.

user-pic

#28, my father travelled all the time for business and missed events. Big deal. You want food on the table? You want to go to a fancy prep school and then Harvard? You want expensive vacations? If she keeps acting out Giuliani should mail her tuition check and then tell her to get a job in the Harvard cafeteria. Cancel her Blackberry and her credit cards.

Coast to coast shows, he's know as the globetrotter
Lonely roads, God only knows
He's grown farther from home, he's no father
He goes home and barely knows his own daughter

he blows, it's all over -- lonely road scholar ... this old rhapsody ...

would you capture it? or just let it slip?

#22, how would this be considered acting up? The girl is a freshman at Harvard, for God's sake.

People are reading way too much into this. It's very, very common for 18-22 year olds to express different political, religious or social views than those held by their parents. Caroline's not running for office, she's not obligated to toe her father's party line, and she's entitled to her own opinions. She's also entitled to her privacy, and to be free from half-assed third party analysis of what her family situation might or might not be.

user-pic

#33, it is acting up. She can have whatever political views she wants and I'm sure her father would agree. Nobody here is saying she has to "toe her father's party line". The point is she publicly embarrassed him. You can't tell me an 18 year old raised in the internet era doesn't know that anything you put online is going to be seen by everyone. If she wants to vote for someone else she can do so in the February primary in the privacy of the voting booth. A stupid Facebook link isn't really support for another candidate. I'd have more respect for her if she was out in ghetto collecting signatures to get Obama on the ballot or something useful. This smells more like she was sitting at home and felt like lashing out at Daddy. You seem to be implying that because she's a freshman at Harvard she can't be acting up? I went to a different Ivy League school and know/knew plenty of Ivy students and plenty of them were incredibly stupid, naive, and childish at 18 and 21. And plenty of them aren't terribly impressive in their 30s.

user-pic

Hooray, Caroline's on our side!
Donna Hanover = Class

re. #26

"inauguration for rudy" .... ya gotta be kiddin' me!!!!

what inauguration for rudy????? you really think he stands a chance? what a F^&*#%^G laugh!!!

user-pic

Mitt Romney is going to get the GOP nod. even with all his flip flops and gun loving acts.

user-pic

Hooray, Caroline's on our side!

What side is that? Barak "Let's invade Pakistan" Obama's side?

user-pic

#33 you said:
"The point is she publicly embarrassed him. You can't tell me an 18 year old raised in the internet era doesn't know that anything you put online is going to be seen by everyone. "

He publicly embarrassed them and their mother by announcing to the entire world that he was leaving their mother at a press conference. That was a very asshole thing to do. And then proceeded to move his mistress in, and then trashed their mother through the divorce. He doesn't sound like a very nice person. I will hate his guts too if I were his kid.

user-pic

The side that's opposite the dark side,
the bald side, the side who married his cousin side.
Caroline's on OUR side, how cool is that?
How can one have two of his own offsprings who hates his guts? God Bless you Donna hanover, God Bless you. You raised two great human beings.

user-pic

what inauguration for rudy????? you really think he stands a chance? what a F^&*#%^G laugh!!!

Considering Hillary Clinton has all but been handed the nomination by her cronies in Hollywood, the media, and state houses around the country that moved their primaries up, yes, Giuliani has a good chance. People hate Hillary. This is going to be a close election if Giuliani is the nominee because the left won't have a pro-life candidate to bash and Hillary Clinton is as much a war hawk as any neocon. If you really want a Democrat to win the Presidency you should be pulling for Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney. One is an actor with no experience and the other is a scary Mormon.

user-pic

What happened to that Chinese guy that used to post a lot?

user-pic

I'd hate my dad too if he was never there, leaving mommy to take care of me and then suddenly dumping her for another woman. The publicity of it too must've made it hell each day.

user-pic

#41

you have a point - people HATE hillary -, but from what i recall in recent (or perhaps not so recent) news, rudy is either wavering or has shifted to the "right" on the abortion/choice question - that should not be surpising as there simply are not enough republicans out there who would support a pro-choice candidate. that said, either rudy will be "bashable" come nov. '08 re. the abortion question, or he will be passed over in favor of somone who is more pro-life, among other things (e.g. pro-gun and stuff like that).

btw, regarding the "if you want a democrat to win the election" comment, i personally can honestly say that i could not care less about having a democrat win - i just want someone who is sane and capable which of course is no one in the current field (not even barack especially after his "lets invade pakistan" statement).... but i/we can dream, right?

All of you who are saying that the "kids should grow up" and "my dad worked all the time too" need to STFU. You have no idea what it was like in that household, good or bad, so you can't really make an informed comment about it. All you can do is speculate, which is completely useless.

user-pic

I bet andrew and caroline are smarter than their dad. what's their SAT scores????????
yah yah, SATs don't mean anything, whatever, you probably went to a diploma mill. Or how bout this, you went to the "Harvard of the......", we've heard them all from people who didn't go to an elite school.
SAT scores, Let's see'em. Let's see all the candidates SAT scores.

As Nelson would say:
HA HA!

user-pic

#33, I went to an Ivy League school too, and I know exactly how insane it can get, but this kid isn't doing anything wrong. For true examples of a politician's child acting up and embarrassing their parents, please refer to Jenna and Barbara B.'s antics and Gore Jr. for good measure.

Caroline's expressing her opinion, and she's allowed to do that. Just because her father is high-profile doesn't mean she has to restrict her political views to a voting booth.

Frankly in this day and age, I'm just happy to see an 18 year old who is actually interested in voting and politics, because there's a lot of apathy out there.

Pretty funny, #13.

And of course the 9/11 Whore parked in a fireman's spot... don't people know he's really a fireman? And a policeman? That's why he was able to singlehandedly save all of NYC on the eleventh. That's how he was able to keep the entire city from burning down!! He and only he.

Get used to saying it now: Madame President.

user-pic

Another of NYs dirty little secrets.

She's disgusted with Dad's politics, esp. the 911 "credit claimed". Even the most cursory review reflects trading FDNY lives -- lot's of 'em -- for personal profit and political gain (one reason he's got firefighters nationwide picketing all his public appearances.

He's scum of the earth to those who know him or his administration. She's kept other family skeletons tucked-in the closet but just independent and shocked enough not to tolerate another of Daddy's big lies.

#50... this is why, according to lots of DC sources, Hillary can't wait to run against him.

And bear in mind, yes, people hate her, and truth be told I have no real passion for her. But it's nothing compared to how much people hated Bill. I was in high school and was about to vote in my first prezzer in '80, and I can tell you first-hand, people HATED Reagan. Hated, hated, hated. Hated and feared him. And I'm told that that was nothing compared to how much people *hated* Nixon. People also hated W. in '00 and even more so in '04.

So, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush... what do these guys all have in common? They got elected.

user-pic

Good for Caroline, she shows she has a mind of her own. If her Dad makes the ticket come next year and she votes in her first presidential election I hope she remmbers that this country has privacy in the polling booth. She can cast her vote for the fuller brushman if she so wishes. Life is about choice. It is the choices made in life that determine the strengeth of our character and the convictioon of our principles.

user-pic

W. didn't get elected, W successfully stole an election in a pure effort of smoky room politicking.

#33 got it right. She has no obligation to refrain from expressing her views, even if they happen to differ from her father's. This is America, remember?

Btw, when did facebook become a legit source of information for the media to reference? A friend of hers could have added that group to her profile as a joke, without her noticing. My facebook page used to say that I ate babies. That doesn't mean it's fucking true.
