DWI Suspect Drank Bottle of Vodka Before Hitting Three

2007_08_vodka.jpgUgh, the story about the woman who police believe hit three pedestrians in Forest Hills on Saturday afternoon gets worse. The Post reports that 54-year-old Susan Karnabe told the police she drank a bottle of vodka 45 minutes before the crash and that she had visited her police officer son, who "told her to get lost or he would call the police." (The court papers say it isn't clear if he knew she would drive, but did he know how she got there to see him?)

Karnabe was arrested and charged with DWI, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of an accident after plowing into 3-year-old Mia Tetelman, her 57-year-old grandmother and her 85-year-old great-grandmother. Witnesses shouted to Karnabe to stop, even showing her the stroller the toddler was thrown from (and that was been dragged under the car), but she did not slow down.

Police, using license plate information from witnesses, tracked down Karnabe hours after the incident. Karnabe had a blood alcohol reading of .094, above the legal limit of 0.08; she also "admitted that as she drove home, she hit something and heard people screaming."

The Post says Mia Tetelman is breathing with a respirator and has broken ribs and bruised lungs. Her grandmother Alva Govshovitz had cuts and bruises and great-grandmother Frida Shein had a broken rib, black eye, and cuts and bruises.

It's a reasonable guess that Karnabe's cop son is soon going to be her ex-cop son.

Yet another reason marijuana should be leaglized.

I am sure everyone has the one relative or friend that has never taken any responsibility for any of their actions. When they knock on the door, you don't even open it, and just tell them to get lost.

If there was a "Public Intoxication Law" in this city, the jails and courts would never get anything done.

Talk about "Mommie Dearest", I am sure he has enough personal baggage due to growing up with that self-centered witch.

Great grandmother or great grandfather? I can understand the occasional typo, but that's a pretty major error.

Yeah, but it was a really small bottle of vodka.

there was a reason he told her to get lost. she's a scumbag. why should people be responsible for their crazy ass mothers? children shouldn't have to take care of parents. It's called unconditional love for a reason, there's no conditions.

Take this lowlife drunk out in back and shoot her. End of story.

I know this sounds crazy, but I lived in the same building as this lady. She was unfortunately was stricken with mental disease. She was divorced, had no family besides her son who I saw on numerous occasions and fed off of her misery, mental disease and taking advantage of her when ever he needed something. She spoke about her grandson 'constantly' and adored him. She was never malicious and always would lend a helpng hand (ALWAYS!). Unfortunately a mental disease is truly a disease and her doctor should have taken that into account and worked a little bit harder on preventing her to get a license. Mental disease is the hardest disease to battle beause it is you against yourself. I know deep down inside she is feeling terrible which does not justify what happened. I know for sure right now that she is in the hospital suffering from seizures probably from alcohol withdrawl. So I say again, never close the doors on your unhealthy loved one's. Please read definition of unconditional love in your dictionaries. She likely woulnd't have been as depressed and drunk if she had loving support from her family. May god bless the families of little Mia.

My concern goes out to the victims of this tragic accident and not to the perpetrator of this CRIME. By victims I mean the accident victims and her family members.

It goes by the term: ENABLING. Most support groups suggests that the families and friends of these substance abusers stop engaging in the emotional blackmail that ensues in this type of situation and let the substance abuser take responsibity for their behavior.
