Attacks in Williamsburg

2005_08_wburgattacks.jpgToday, we received a tip about recent attacks on women in Williamsburg.

so Friday night at about 1:30am i got attacked right out front of my apt building as i was trying to get in the door. i fought a good fight but the asshole got everything... id, cc cards, cash, phone, and a couple of kicks to my face. bruises and cuts aside... be careful in your own neighborhoods. he literally came out of nowhere. i live on south 4th between wythe and kent in williamsburg. the cops said that most likely hes a repeat offender, so if anyone hears of ANYTHING in williamsburg, let me know. Because the guy beat me up the cops are going to leave this as an open investigation. There are supposedly security cameras on the outside of my building, so hopefuly they would have caught the whole thing. GIRLS watch out when you are walking alone at night. this sucks. this guy is wanted for robbery and assault and the police are taking this VERY seriously.
Then an update saying:
there is apparently a guy in williamsburg who is attacking girls from behind and cutting their faces, i did not get cut, but i also hit the guy and fought him off as much as i could. the cases all might be related. still waiting to see if the security tapes come through.
There have also been attacks on the North side of the 'Burg. The precinct couldn't give many details (the detective was off today, too) and when we called the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information's office, we were told systems were down on the first try and then the line was busy on the second and third tries.

With the East Village/LES Sex Attacker caught and then released, and now this...it may be a good time to take a self-defense class. Here is one suggested seminar and class - please comment with more. Also, RightRides has also expanded its service (here's a map of the areas they serve).

Just in time for SoS's anniversary.

Self-Defense Classes???

How about the radical idea of allowing people to exercise their constitutional right to keep and bear arms?

Imagine that, being able to defend yourself from violence the way our constitution allows instead of being victims in our own neighborhoods.

Oh, I forgot, people in this city love to scream and yell about every other amendment being trampled, but don't give a rat's ass about the one that allows you to protect the others.

user-pic

I believe the best combination of self defense is Krav-Maga mixed with a good jogging programme. My advice: don't try to fight the attacker... use Krav-Maga to get distance and then RUN. You will not only survive, you will also have foiled the robbery.

Even with a gun, without some form of martial arts and cardio to create distance, the gun could be taken away from you quite easily. Then instead of a purse grab, you might end up being led to an ATM, or worse... your apartment, by gunpoint.

user-pic

Guns don't save people, people save people.

What's this about "since I got beat up the cops will keep this as an open investigation"? So if there had been no injuries the cops would have closed the case without doing any work?

user-pic

time to stock up on pepper spray. I'm getting them on my way home during the labor day weekend.
get a stun gun while you're at it, they're cheap.
I wouldn't carry a gun in the city, too risky.

user-pic

hmm...ill prob get shit for this, but that's not exactly the safest area in the burg....it's all industrial and at that time of nite its completely vacant....def not a place to walk alone, guy or girl, after midnite....the freaks stay near the water...

Oh yeah #2, that's great. Let's let any idiot who can clear a basic background check run around with a handgun in his/her pocket all day. Even if you were naive enough to think people would only use them for "good" (fighting off attacks) doesn't make it any better, or safer. Think of the anarchy if people started whipping a gun out every time someone looked at them cock-eyed.

user-pic

Self Defense classes? How about a compact Glock 9? I forgot this is new york city, where only criminals can have guns....

user-pic

Unfortunately #6, I don't think stun guns are legal in NYC. But yeah, I have to go get some pepper spray. I leave near this area, and while my street isn't industrial it doesn't feel completely safe at night.

user-pic

Self-defense is good. But, good old intelligence helps also.

Get someone to walk with you if you plan on staying out late, or take a cab and ask the driver to drop you off right in front of your door and wait until you get inside of your building. Or, if you have a roommate, call them from your cell phone and ask them to come downstairs and meet you at the front door.

user-pic

more like puertoricans

A friend of mine (liek an idiot) came home at 5AM after drinking in the East Village. He llived off teh Halsey St stop in the J. When he left the station he walked by a group a black guys and was about a half block away when he heard someone running. He turned around and this six foot black dude is charging right at him. He starts to run but the guy kicks and punches him. Eventually, after much screaming the black guy get up and leaves him alone, not even robbing him! The police come and when my friend asks them what he shoud do, they reply, "Move." My friend left the hood the next day.

These are the tragic stories of gentrification.

user-pic

You really shouldn't fight back. If this guy had a knife or a gun, she could have been more seriously injured or killed. It sucks, but just give them the wallet and the handbag.

reason #2343 to never move to williamsburg.

user-pic

#2, there is a very special episode of the Golden Girls that you clearly missed, where Rose buys a gun and nearly shoots Blanche coming home from a date. To quote Sofia: "I've lived through World Wars, but one night I'll break wind and Stable Mable here will blow my head off."

I disagree with #15. I've been mugged twice and both times I resisted. The attackers left with nothing. In both cases they said they were armed, but I suspected they were bluffing. If I'd seen a weapon it would have been a different story, I would have handed them what they wanted (I'm not a very imposing person).

On another note, I have to say, I hate it when people say things like, "he literally came out of nowhere." Just leave out the term "literally" and it's fine.

user-pic

Here's a fun fact: Pepper spray is legal in NYC, not mace, but the good 'ol NYPD feels the need to stop and question my girlfriend regarding her carrying of pepper spray. "Why are you carrying this?" Gotta love that NYPD.

user-pic

I was mugged at the Lorimer J, M stop in June. Apparently, my mugger had been targeting women in their 20's and 30's as they approached the subway stations. Detectives told me he had mugged approximately 6 or 7 other women in the East Williamsburg area in a span of two weeks. This was at 7pm (still light out) and there was a station attendant approximately 15 feet away. This man approached me with a gun and took everything.

PLEASE be careful when taking the J, M or G stops in this part of williamsburg. Even if it's light out, these criminals are acting extremely ballsy and threatening women. Although this man did not physically assault me, he did pistol whip one of the girls. Detective still haven't caught the guy, so be extremely cautious. I'm extremely paranoid and upset from this incident and would hate for this guy or any other mugger to attack more individuals.

user-pic

Oh, and I extremely disagree with the individual who said to fight back. There is no way to really know if this person has a gun. They WILL get physical. Just hand them everything you own.

Also, don't offer them cash. Let them take your credit cards. This will help investigators SO MUCH in trying to catch these guys. Do not cancel your credit cards until detectives tell you to. You will get reimbursed. It will be no big deal.

user-pic

#4 so "guns don't save people, people save people"? what about "people don't give a fuck about people"? We know it's true...

user-pic

Always fight back, always make noise, always kick and scream, bite pull hair, punch throats, gouge eyes. Then put some distance between the villain and yourself and call the police..

user-pic

like many government laws, they don't know squat.
Mace is a brand name. It's still pepper spray. I suggest Fox brand pepper spray.
of course, a tazer is illegal but it's sure fun to have a parties.
A glock 26 is still pretty heavy to carry around, cops can see if you're carrying when you favor one side when walking. or, when you're constantly hiking up your waistband, a clear giveaway.

user-pic

A handgun is a complex piece of equipment. Using it properly in a combat or high stress situation is even more complex. Most people don't have the time to train and maintain the skills to use it properly. Even the NYPD has problems with this. In a high stress situation rounds fired often miss the target and they still have all the killing power. Just google today's story about a 5 year old being shot while fishing.

I'm all about the 2nd amendment, but be practical. You can't go around with a gun on your hip or in your bag. Why? Because you need to be ready and expecting to use it at every turn or it won't be used properly. And then there is always the drinking issue.

I think you gotta go with #4. People save people, isn't that the point of living in a great city with great people. Exceptions noted.

user-pic

Also, might I suggest keeping your id (driver's license, cc-- mostly things w/ your name and/or add) in a seperate pocket. Just so if you do have to give up the goods the killer(s) don't know where you live!!

user-pic

Mace is a brand name of tear-gas chemical product consisting of 1% CN gas in a solvent of sec-butanol, propylene glycol, cyclohexene, and dipropylene glycol methyl ether; it is very harmfull and banned in many countries. Pepper spray utilizes Oleoresin Capsicum, an aromatic hydrocarbon derived from chili peppers. Far less harmfull. As far as weight, those of us that have concealed-carry permits tend to use a nice holster (a quality one custom sized for your pistol) rather than tuck them into our pants (also known as the "Mexican carry"). I carry a Para-Ordnance 12-45 every day; titanium frame, steel slide, same size as a Colt Commander but with a double stack magazine and 12 rounds of .45 ACP. Not exactly heavy, but not really ligt either. A custom shoulder rig to wear with workplace attire and a sweet, small of the back, belt rig both from Andrew's Custom Leather in High Springs, Florida make the pistol a pleasure to wear.

user-pic

serves you fuckin right, gentrifier.

user-pic

I can carry and not get noticed. I'm white.
Only blacks and PR's get stopped and frisked, not us yuppie/hipsters.
Carry on my wayward son, carry on.
another hint, hide in plain sight, use your jedi mind trick.
I carry a Desert Eagle five point Oh replica on the slide, myself.

user-pic

How the fuck is this news? Oh, because it happened in Williamsburg, not 145 and Bway.

Gothamist: your news source for grafitti and hipsters.

user-pic

after learing KM in israel, about 6 years ago i used Krav-Maga on an 2 young thug assailants with a blade on the 1 train... so successful!

i busted ones jaw and the other guys nose. i even got an applaud from straphangers. i bet they'll think real hard next time before trying their tricks again.

i did howevr, report myself to two cops (black and hispanic) at the next stop to avoid being accused of assault. they bth asked me what happened... and then told me to go home and wash my hands... amazing!

user-pic

I like krav maga on a roll, little seasoning needed. it's the sweetest of the sweet meats.

If Ur gonna use a firearm, forget abou the Glock or any other High-price High-Tech weapon.
Small calibre revolver, Llama, Star, Ruger, .22, .25 or .32 throw-away.
You're not looking to kill, and have no training. You have no time to rack an auto, and it is dangerous to carry a round in the chamber. You want to stop the interaction, NOW, and run.
If it's just a material cash/card thing focus on the face and give it up.
If it's a rape/assault thing, get the above or something like a SOG fixed blade.
Above all, situational awareness.
Know the neighborhood, the havens, have a strategy.

Stay safe.

don't anyone carry a whistle anymore?

user-pic

I can haz rapist dagos with nives?

user-pic

"three shot as wild gun fire spewed in a crowded bar as a young women attempted to defend herself from an attacker. She was heavily intoxicated."

we do not need more guns

user-pic

this will keep happening when you have these hipsters straight outta art school who think it is ok to stumble out of the subway at 2am in bed sty begging to be jumped.

I was walking home with someone else when I was mugged at gunpoint by 2 men - so while walking home with another person is a good idea in general, it will not neccesarily prevent a mugging.

user-pic

Horrible, I hope they catch the guy that's doing this.

I gotta say though, as someone who has been outright jacked on a couple different occasions and is a gun owner.. and has concealed carry permits in two different states, I'll say with authority that you rarely, if ever, are going to see it coming in a way that will allow you to actually use the gun in a defensible way.

Both times I was jacked, the attacker came up from behind and pistol whipped me to the floor before I knew what the hell was going on. At that point, even if I was carrying at the time, my piece would have been useless and would have probably gotten me killed on top of beaten and robbed.

I'm a real big fan of keeping a piece in the house to use for when people intrude on your property and you're alerted to it as it happens because in that case you have the benefit of distance and at least a reasonable span of time to get ready..out on the street all bets are off.

..And with the people that have been moving into this town in the last several years, I don't trust people without training and know of the land to differentiate between some dude asking for the time and some dude looking to rob you.

I hate to say it, but this is because there are too many scared white people who have very little previous contact with minorities around here. Sad, but true.

Now if you're a business owner then yeah, you should carry, especially when doing cash drops and always have a buddy or fellow employee with you.. but the city already makes allowances for that.

Such is life..

-Ph

user-pic

@Dadoc. You could not be more wrong. Those small calibre rounds stand a better chance of just making your attacker enraged. .38 is the smallest size you should EVER be thinking about if you are shooting something than small game (racoons, nutrias, squirrels, and the like), .38 in +P or +P+ is great, .45 is better. The goal is to create a large cavitation, leading to internal organ disruption, sepsis, and death. You NEVER, EVER, EVER, shoot to wound. If you kill your attacker you have a police inquest, a field-sobriety test, your weapon will be taken in as evidence (This is why responsible firearms owners own more than one firearm.), and you will have to give a statement to the po-po. If you wound your attacker it's just your word against theirs (Think B. Goetz, "I wasn't trying to rob him, I was just playing with my sharpened screwdriver while my friends asked to borrow some money.") and you will soon have an assault charge and a civil lawsuit on your hands. A firearm is useable by almost anyone, regardless of size, with a minimum of training (Compared to a blade or martial arts, where you are just asking for a beat-down if you have not been training in those styles for YEARS.) All citizens need to remember that the police are not now nor have they ever been here to prevent crime. Police exist to investigate crime after it has already occured. When it comes to crime prevention or avoidance the citizen is the responsible party.

user-pic

i live near where this happend and i often ride my bike down kent. i see women jogging alone or walking alone in this area late at night and it isn't safe. it's actually pretty stupid of them (and men too of course). i think most of these women are from safer more civilized parts of the country and they don't realize that while nyc has gotten better over the years it's still dangerous to a degree especially in some 'hoods. AND, don't EVER fight back and think you're being tough and feel you need to prove something. just act quiet and robotic and turn over your stuff. it's just plain dumb to try to fight back unless the mugger gets violent. if the mugger is just threatening you with violence then give 'em what they want. it isn't worth taking a chance and getting stabbed or shot.

user-pic

Also it NOT "dangerous" to carry a round in the chamber of an automatic. Please check out any of the fine resources available on the net to look at the operating action of single and double action semi-automatic pistols. Remember, revolvers jam too. If an semi-auto jams you can strip it and clear it, when a revolver jams you have to take it to your gunsmith.

user-pic

From RightRides:

"Driving Teams can only drive women, transpeople and gender queer individuals home."

Once again, straight, White guys are discriminated against.

user-pic

The only reason we still have streetcrime is the idiotic attitude of folks like poster #41. ALWAYS FIGHT BACK!!! If you just bow down and turn over your wealth and dignity to these animals they will never stop. Stand up for yourself, stop living in fear. These are our streets and it is the responsibility of ALL OF US to make them safe. This means zero tolerance for quality of life crimes (loitering, vandalism, and so on). He may be a wife-cheating, 9/11 grief bandwagon riding, facist ass but Rudy was right with the broken window theory. It is high time we start holding those that purport to speak for "communties of color" to task when their "people" break the law.

user-pic

No. 30: it may not be a triple murder headline story, we should be reminded every now and then that you need to be careful everywhere and not just on the "bad" blocks. as someone that lives only a few blocks from there and was recently followed home by a dude at 5pm in broad daylight, it's definitely news-worthy to me.

user-pic

wealth and dignity #44? you would actually feel like you lost your dignity if someone mugged you? the mugger is the one with no diginity. and if you give up some jewelry and some cash in exchange for not having a knife stuck in your gut or your brains blown out it's definitely worth it. "fighting back" isn't going to deter muggers. if a mugger is driven enough and selfish enough he/she doesn't think "oh gee i'm not going to mug anymore because everyone seems to be fighting back these days".

user-pic

This was sent to me by my neighbor on South Second and Roebling a week ago:

Ladies, there's yet another serial rapist on the loose and this time he struck close to home. His m.o. is to follow a woman who's walking alone late at night. He pretends to be talking on a cell phone, when the woman stops at her building, he stops too and pretends to be talking to a friend inside the building, saying "Yeah, I'm out in front of the building now, buzz me in, oh never mind, here's someone going in". Then the woman he's following lets him into the building and he grabs her from behind and gets her in a choke hold as soon as they're inside. The latest attack happened at 2:00am Tuesday morning, on Driggs between S. 3rd & S. 4th.

Description: 21-25 male hispanic or white, very short hair, 5' 7" tall 130 lbs, was wearing a black jack daniels t- shirt & blue jeans

Just a reminder to all that it's never a good idea for a woman to be walking around alone that late, even though in a perfect world, we should be able to. And to never let anyone you don't know into your building: remember Ted Bundy.

Please forward this to your female friends in the neighborhood. This is not an internet hoax, this info was given to me by a building super on the block whose brother-in-law is a cop at the 90th precinct. He also showed me security video footage from a building on Driggs & S. 2nd that showed the young lady walking home and the rapist walking behind her. Have fun, be well, and be safe.

user-pic

Just use common sense

dont let strangers into the building with you ever.

if someone is following you is to cross the street.. if they do too, cross back, and if they start to follow, confront them and loudly ask in a forceful voice "WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME"

if they threaten you and youre alone and cant get away, give them what they want.

always run if they try to force you to go anywhere with them

most times, attackers have already decided if they are going to use force or not before attacking so running is usually a good idea

user-pic

#46, that attitude is why you will always be a victim.

user-pic

Yea 46, sounds like you've already given up and made the choice to live your life in fear. "Oh no! He might threaten me with violence. Here, take my stuff mister."

user-pic

Half of you tough guys talking about fighting back..not to mention all the gun goings-on above..I'm willing to wager have not actually had any real run-ins with real life hardguys before.

People talk real tough from their office cubes, but when it actually happens to you, you realize how hard you aren't and how bad these types of fools that actually do the robbing stealing and killing really are.

Just sayin', as someone who's been there. I'll give up my money clip and the credit cards rather than go to the hospital again. I have nothing left to prove.

-Ph

user-pic

I like krav maga, too. it's the new israeli sushi.
I'd like to see you tough guys get mugged by two armed men and fight back.
me? i luv me my desert eagle point five oh with replica on it's side.
gun nuts is the correct term.

user-pic

Listen,
There is no right answer on whether to just give up your shit or fight back. What, don't fight back and let the perv rape and beat you? Or fight back, get a slash to the face, but keep your wallet? You will never know the situation until you are IN IT. So why not be as prepared as possible. Don't take any stupid risks, but sometimes you need to take those the ten steps from your car to your door alone. At night. Get a whistle, pepper spray, an alarm. Take a self defense class. None of these ideas are a waste of time and whether or not you ever need to use them, at least you will be more prepared than most.

user-pic

In this battle, you're going to lose when dealing with people who have nothing to lose.
sure you've won by keeping them poor and not hiring them but when it comes to this battle, give up because they'll shoot you as quick as in a blink of an eye. They got nothing to lose, death and prison means nothing, probably means a way out.

user-pic

Anti-Mugging 101

1. Do not even think of buying a gun. The person attacking you knows how to use it better than you do, even if he's not carrying one.

2. Beware of not enough self-defense training. If you want to use any of those techniques you picked up in that free trial taekwondo workshop effectively, then dedicate yourself to training until the moves are second nature to you.

3. Even if you have martial arts training, you still have to rely on your instincts and common sense. Every situation is different. A lot of people seem to forget that and lose it to macho posturing or rigid unrealistic plans of how they would defend themselves.

4. Don't walk around in a constant state of fear and paranoia. I'm saying this as a rape survivor who was attacked in 1999 in broad daylight, but I grew up here in the 80's when random attacks were a much more constant threat, and nothing ever happened to me during those years. Bad things can happen anywhere, so a clear state of mind and confidence is the best way to keep yourself safe.

Hope that helps. I'm not responding to anyone in particular, I just find all this talk of guns and eye-gouging kind of ridiculous.

user-pic

"Do not even think of buying a gun. The person attacking you knows how to use it better than you do, even if he's not carrying one." Enough with the liberal fear-mongering. That, and speak for yourself lady. Criminals generaly don't spend time training with their firearms and have an understanding of them based almost solely on pop-culture misrepresentations of same. When someone is holding their pistol sideways and not bracing their wrist, their hit probability decreases dramaticly. As for the cubicle soldiers, I'm with ya on that one. My pronounced love of the .45 ACP cartridge that I posted above is based upon 6 years with the 7th ID (light), seeing combat in Honduras, Panama, and Kuwait; followed by 10 years in the Legion Etranger, most of that in the 2e REP with combat in Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, and Afghanistan. The eye-gouging, well, the eye-gouge is just a very effective strike. Keeping your fingers loose, drive them forward into your opponent's eye with a snapping motion, then run away. When confronted with a strike towards the face, a persons natural reaction is to lean back, leaving the groin region exposed. When aiming an attack at the groin, a persons reaction is to pike down, thereby exposing their face. Simple street fighting that's all.

user-pic

I can't wait for one of the tough guys to get shot because the homey is holding the gun sideways.
they got nothing to lose. Life is already hell for them, death would be an escape.
Learn from the posts where the poster was mugged not from the posts of the tough guys.

user-pic

Wow, that's pretty negative, bitter, and demonstrably wrong #57. Life is better in the ghettos of NYC in the 21st century than it ever was for the VAST majority of humanity for the last 10,000 years. Life in 21st century America is better (no matter what your social standing) than it is for a great many people on Earth today. Indoor plumbing, potable water, dentistry, the ability to go about your day without the king sending someone over to lop off your head because you belive in a different big, invisible, man in the sky than he does, or someone blowing up a Pizza Hut full of teenagers because his deity gets upset when women show their ankles. Make no mistake, their is nothing hellish about their lives other than their consience decision to prey on those weaker than themeselves. Their presense should not be tolerated by freedom loving peoples. I'm certainly no fan of the po-po but this city is too small and too crowded for us to accept such sociopathic behavior from our neighbors. This isn't about standing up to muggers, it's about living the golden rule and not suffering those that don't to live amongst us.

user-pic

you're not always a victim if you hand your cahs and stuff over. you're just a victim in that moment and then you go on with your life. it's not like you're mugged every day or even once every five years. you'll be more of a victim when you're lying dead in the street. i've grown up around thugs who mug and do stuff like this and they live in a totally different reality than most people. they have no regard for your life or any life for that matter so it's just better to give them what they want. this is as far as mugging goes. i'm not talking about actually being attacked and/or raped. that depends more on the situation.

user-pic

Hey, to 56 from 55... okay, you're the exception on this forum when it comes to guns, because clearly you know how to use one, and the eye gouge is one of the best moves to learn. I just get tired of hearing people with two bits of knowledge or less blathering on about how tough they are...

user-pic

You'll always lose with people who have nothing to lose. If their lives are so great, why don't anyone switch their circumstances with them for one day? one hour? one minute?
Learn from those who were mugged, talk to them and they'll tell you. I'll tell you my experience, went down a dark side street instead of a brightly lit main thoroughfare. two guys ahead of us made a short stop and produced guns to our ribs. Yes, it was that close a contact and unexpected.
When people have nothing to lose, things happen. Some just keep on denying that fact because they have everything to lose. Look at that Connecticut family who's family were murdered. You want that to happen to your family?

I think it's disingenuous to say these people have "nothing to lose." I won't argue that these muggers' lives may be terrible, but violence against innocent people is not their only choice.

@61: The suspects in the Connecticut case were career criminals, in the suburbs/countryside. I'm not really sure the two things are comparable.

user-pic

That's because you're thinking from the side of the person with "something to lose" YOUR FUTURE.
these people have no future
your future's so bright, you gotta wear shades. right?
The Connecticut suspects had nothing to lose, might as well add in another murder to the rap sheet.

@63/61(?): So you don't believe in rehabilitation? A better future? These people may have given up on a better life but it isn't because one isn't available to them.

user-pic

oh yeah, they can see home ownership in their future.
There's no future and it's been said not just by me but by many others.
YOU have a future of home ownership, a future in retirement, a future.
There's no future for them. Death is a blessing.
the future's so Bright, I gotta wear shades.
the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.
don't worry, be happy.

user-pic

Oh wah! Why am I supposed to feel bad about scumbags who beat up a woman??? This incident happened to a close friend of mine and I am supposed to tell her - "Well that's what you get for coming home so late?" We live in a free country where you are given the right as an adult to come out of your home at any time and to return to said home whenever the hell you want. When we start saying - "well I shouldn't have gone done that alley or I shouldn't have worn that jewelry" then we give in to the criminals.

I could give two craps if these people don't have anything to live for. They are crooks and scumbags who haven't found any other way to make money - god forbid getting a job. If these people decided to stand up and change their communities for a more positive way, they wouldn't have these problems. And I get even more disgruntled when we are told we (I am assuming white people with jobs) shouldn't live in their neighborhoods. What's funny about this is we all can barely afford to live in NY - just because we happen to be white does not make me rich. For years, I have had to hear how terrible it must be to live in the ghetto or hood - well soon we will all be learning all too well since the housing market is so terrible.

@65: There might not be much chance for a better life, but there is a chance. I have to have hope that the situation can improve, no matter how slim the chance is. What'sour other option?

user-pic

In these days, with the economics being what it is - not everyone has the option of owning a home. And if they do - does that give anyone the right to rob them of their money?

user-pic

yes, don't worry be happy.
Jeez 68 posts on a tip story.

user-pic

Muggings in those areas are NOT uncommon. I can't tell you how many calls I'd get from women living in those blocks who desperately wanted to move to Italian Williamsburg or Greenpoint, just out of the Southside. The thing is, those areas are FINE if you use *common sense*, which, as another posted noted, does NOT mean walking home drunk from the L at 4 in the morning. That does not mean it's your fault; that just means BE MINDFUL. This is not the suburbs.

user-pic

Bitch, Bitch ,Bitch ! This brings to mind another phrase: "If Ur not from the Hood, Don't come to the Fucking Hood" ! Those of you complaining about by terrorized by those you refer to as "Lowlifes" need to remember Ur the ones invading there Hood ! That aside, Some of you folks aren't the brightest in the world ! Walking home from Ur subway stop from some bar half drunk is not the move ! You make yourself a target to someone out up to no good . They already resent you for jacking up there rents and know you have money . I understand some people have jobs that force them to work late nites and all, but using Common Sense is a skill some of us are born with while others must learn through trail & Error ! there is apparently a guy in williamsburg who is attacking girls from behind and cutting their faces
Apparently? According to who? This sounds like bullshit. There are dangerous people around, but starting rumors like this is irresponsible. Someone attacking women, yes I believe that is happening. Some "psychopath" sneaking up on women and cutting them? Sounds like an episode of Law and Order.

Seriously, if the police are actually aware of an individual repeatedly attacking women in a particular area of the city but are not alerting the public, every single news desk in the city would be itching to take up that story and turn it into the scandal of the month.

Your love for the concept of "The Hood" is so sweet. unfortunately since this is New York City it has absolutely no meaning except an unfortunate affection everyone has to the areas they are from, THE HOOD is a term given to the areas of low income residents to create a false sense of pride which has unfortunately manifested into an endearing idea which keeps people down in those areas, especially youths that grow up wanting to be "Gangstas" instead of something Real - I taught 5th grades in Crown Heights that all lived below the poverty level - their talents were lost because of the influence from people like you who felt for some reason that culture is a Positive thing - the reason of course is your personal fear with doing something in your life - like the bully who is actually a scared little boy.
Anyway with that aside, since this is New York City that means that for the past 400 years all these areas have been going up and down tearing down and rebuilding and tearing down - any areas that are Hoods now 50 years ago were either classic upwardly mobal city scapes (for example Crown Heights) or they were FARMS yeah - East New York was once a farm
Hence 50 years from now your precious Hood will be completely different with completely different people and so on and so on
There is nothing you can do about it
My conclusion is that You should quit Your Whining and realize we live in a horrible world but the one thing that should be is that No One Should Hurt Another Person - End of Story.
No Matter what their reasoning is, it is wrong and if you don't like it Than Tough Shit

The men and women in these posts can do something more than describe all the fighting or running they would do, or laying blame on victims for being ignorant of their own neighborhoods. We LIVE IN THESE FUCKING NEIGHBORHOODS. We sleep here, we wake up here, we work here, and many of us will die here.

I live in Bushwick and follow the unspoken rules of conduct to maintain my own safety. To those people who post with the idea that certain people just do not belong here, be clear that it is THE CRIMINAL who should not be among us. The Anti-Gentrifier must surely notice that the criminal is in want of that very thing you despise in your neighborhood: more money.

We walk dark streets with trash in them. It is embarrassing. The work must be done to create a neighborhood that does not tolerate such low standards. This environment, including its residents, is of our own making and maintenance. It is a sad lot of people here without the social skills and decency to let a stranger pass without threatening or degrading them based on race, gender, or class.

A SPINE to stand with is something we are all born with, not the immediate sense to fear strangers who have never hurt us before. Accept your own responsibilities and expect the same of every-damned-one of your neighbors.
