In 2005 Barbara Walters mentioned her distaste for public breastfeeding on The View and was met at the show's studio with "lactivists" protesting her statement.
The NY Press reported that the "lactivists" (the New York City Breastfeeding Promotion and BABE - the Brooklyn Alliance for Breastfeeding Empowerment) were back Friday packed in to a southbound A train at noon. The groups carried signs that read “La leche materna es el mejor alimento” and “Breast milk is best milk.” Along with the signs - t-shirts, buttons and of course boobs were on full display in support of the right to breast feed in public.
State Senator Liz Krueger, author of the Breastfeeding Mothers’ Bill of Rights, was amongst the group. The Bill which was passed by the Assembly and has yet to go before the Senate, "requires that expectant moms be informed of breastfeeding options before they deliver and while in the hospital, and prevents formula providers from pressuring moms while they’re at the hospital."
The train full of breast feeding supporters ended up at the BABE-sponsored breastfeeding fair at Restoration Plaza in Bedford Stuyvesant to join in on World Breastfeeding Week, which ends on August 7th.

It would be nice if the lactivists understood that society is a two way street. Just as women should be allowed to breast feed wherever they want they should also take their fellow citizens into consideration in that most of us don't want to see you perform a bodily function in public.
Agreed. What about the people that don't want to see women breastfeeding in public...do we have any rights?
The flip side of a right is an obligation. If it's their right to breastfeed in public, it's your obligation to tolerate it.
Last time I checked, it wasn't a law to be polite about it either. And for the record- I think this is disgusting. No problem with gays, trans, etc, but any time fat women feel the need to show the world their breasts- thats crossing the line. How is that not public nudity?
Yeah, some people don't want to watch YOU eat either... but will you take your lunch into the bathroom with you? Probably not...
is it impolite if I stare?
Anyone who thinks it's rude to breast feed a baby in public should never, ever be allowed to walk a dog in the city. I mean, if breast-feeding rubs you the wrong way then surely watching a dog piss and shit on the street grosses you out too.
The flip side of a right is an obligation. If it's their right to breastfeed in public, it's your obligation to tolerate it.
No, the flip side of a right is to use the right responsibly. And consideration for your fellow citizen is always a good idea.
Yeah, some people don't want to watch YOU eat either.
Yeah and I hate those people that eat their chicken wings on the subway and dump the bones on the floor. I don't do that. I don't even take beverages on the subway. And I don't eat while walking down the street. It's uncivilized. Do that anywhere else in the world and people look at you like the uncivilized person you are. The only place people have to watch me eat is my dining room and restaurants. Tough lucl.
And I don't own a dog but if I did I would walk it away from people when it need to crap. I wouldn't steer dog toward crowds.
Isn't it ironic that the Brestfeeding Room sign has a baby being fed with a bottle?
When I see breastfeeding it does seem odd/different... But so does watching two guys kiss. Maybe some would accuse us of Brestfeeding-phobia?
bah, what prudes.
but will you take your lunch into the bathroom Wwith you? Probably not...
No, but I wouldn't pee in the dining room, either. Time and place. This is an asinine argument. The baby doesn't realize if it's eating in a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, den, living room, or porno shop. You could be feeding it standing upside down in a garbage can. There's also a really good chance they'll never remember this imposition on their precious psyches.
I mean, if breast-feeding rubs you the wrong way then surely watching a dog piss and shit on the street grosses you out too.
Apples... meet oranges. And yeah, actually, I can think of lots more things I'd rather watch than a dog shit on a street corner or rather smell than dog piss on a hot afternoon.
if you dont like it, stop looking. go about your business, this is a non issue and there are really more important things to worry about. what the hell else are we going to be told not to do in this land of the "free".
You know, I'm indifferent to public breastfeeding, but these "lactivists" have way, WAY too much time on their hands. Instead of whining about how their rights are being infringed upon, why don't they spend their time on fighting REAL rights infringement cases, racism, reproductive rights restrictions, etc.? I guess the right to breastfeed on a train merits more attention, then, say, the Jena 6?
Oh, that's right, I forgot, the rights of hipster babies to eat anywhere are more important than the fact that other people out there in America are being deprived of food and real civil rights.
i can't believe u scumbags r complaining about women breast-feeding their babies. read #13
This isn't text messaging, f.y.i. At least spell things out.
There's a time and place for everything. I don't appreciate women whipping out boob in public, therefore, I don't appreciate public breastfeeding. I have no problem with breastfeeding, but there still has to be consideration for others. I strongly agree with what TKaisen said though.
We have more important issues to worry about, then repetitively discuss breastfeeding issues over and over again.
