NYU and Poly Finally Merge

2007_07_nyu.gif2007_07_poly.gifYesterday we got a tip that Polytechnic University posted an emergency message on their site. Later it became clear in an update to the tipster that "NYU is taking over Polytechnic, which will become Polytechnic Institute of New York University."

Apparently NYU's President Sexton has been wanting an engineering program for a while. In October 2004 The NY Times published an article about the possible alliance, mentioning the closure of the engineering program at NYU 31 years prior due to financial difficulties - at which point Poly hired 100 NYU faculty members from that department. The night before The Times article came out, an email from Sexton was sent to staff, faculty and students apprising them of the situation.

Finally it looks like NYU will be getting big science back, and while both schools will mutually benefit from the merger we wonder what this means for admissions standards...and the question our tipster asks is: will the NYU kids will now take over Brooklyn Heights as well?

As for all engineering majors are concerned, not much will be affected for Poly. However, for all Humanities and probably the Business programs (BTM), all the professors and staff will be able to have their tenure but we do not know for sure if the depts will be scrapped and replaced.

The bright side of this is the possibility of a better guy-girl ratio. Too bad I recently graduated =( ... Poly is getting better but it still has debts. The new president is actually doing better than the last one. Damn Chang for screwing things up.

Just got the Sexton e-mail about this. It's still kind of hedging between possible merger and definite.

See, you're lucky you can say that. As an engineering student, your program probably won't see much change, at all. I am a BMS student (for those of you who do not attend, BMS is Biomolecular Science). I am afraid that all students in my major might get dumped into the NYU Biochem program, which is far less rigorous than the Poly program.

Whether we're merging with NYU or not, I'm still going to get my degree at Poly. As long as this merger doesn't cause people to shove Poly on the side and start dubbing us as "Polytechnic Institute of NYU", I'm alright with it. We should be proud of Poly and our roots. Poly's future looks bright, and will be even brighter if we all pitch in some effort to make our school more famous (it's time for Polytechnic University to shine, just not by means of merging).

This story is a game of telephone gone bad. The statement issued by Polytechnic University just says that both institutions are interested in talking further, not that they have merged.

If this is true, I just got an NYU degree by default.

    No actually, you didn't.

On Friday, August 3rd, the executive boards of Polytechnic University and NYU had made a 100% agreement to merge the two universities as NYU's school of Engineering.

Some of you may wonder what this means:

First off, the decision still isn't final. All it means is that both universities are open to the possibility and that this is debatable by faculty, staff and you as students (our customers).

For most of you, this will probably mean nothing as nothing is truly expected to happen until at least 2011, most likely 2012.

Now, it is honestly is a benefit to you as students. Really, the staff have the biggest concerns as not one of them has any guarentee of their job.

Here are some benefits it offers to us at Poly:

-Accelerate the pace at which Poly achieve's its strategic mission (excellece, distinction, and resources to pay for it all)

-Boost the transformation of applied science and technology education as set forth in Poly's strategiv plan (achievement of excellece, distinction, and resources while continuing Poly's strategic mission)

-Continue Poly's tradition (shared by NYU) of supporting talented students seeking opportunity who might otherwise not obtain it

-Have oversight and responsibility for the key assets of Polytechnic including its endowment, real estate, and faculty tenure (meaning we keep the faculty as long as they want to teach here)

-Strengthenthe fundamentals throughout Poly, such as access to NYU's traditional admissions program, broader course offerings through course options at NYU, and library facilities at NYU

-Increase "investment capital" for Poly to expand its faculty, facilities and educational programs

-Gain access to NYU's global network of 8 campuses around the world that provide global programs for graduate and undergraduate admissions.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing. The fact that is you have much more options now then you could have if we remained independent.

I hope they do merge. Maybe I'll finally get my alumni e-mail account. How can a technology school take 5+ years to set this up?

Nothing about it on the Polytechnic emergency page. Nothing about this on the news.

Nothing about this on the blogosphere except on Gothamist.

Things just seem to go in circles sometimes. Polytech was Polytechnic Institute before becoming Polytechnic University. Now it goes back to being an institute.

i don't think this will work out but the current talks are very serious. an information sheet has actually been posted on poly's blackboard. outlining what would happen under a possible merger. as a student, i can only hope for the best.

i'm not surprised... when my cousin was going there and telling me all the stories about the school, it should've been long closed already because i swear the president of poly was pocketing money and making himself rich.

I just got out of Poly (BS Civil Engineering) Unless poly bounced it's last check, this is bullsh!t. This was hot news in 2004, and was shot down by the staff @ Poly. The current admin. was looking at building the name of the school up, and not merge.

If this is true, I just got an NYU degree by default.

Is this a hoax or something? There is nothing about this on either Polytechnic's or NYU's website.

Will people near Polytechnic be exclaiming: "Uh-oh! There goes the neighborhood!" In Greenwich Village, NYU has done their best to eat up the real estate. They even demolished Edgar Allan Poe's home on West Third Street despite on-going protests and negative publicity. NYU has a great deal of money - - now they are about to get more. "Ad Ardua Per Astra" is their motto - - but NYU students always translated the Latin (tongue in cheek) as "Make all checks payable to New York University." - - Hey, come up and see Mae - - http://MaeWest.blogspot.com - - for some laughs.
