You've Got Mail! TB?

2007_08_aoltbscare.jpgAn anonymous tipster just sent us an email from the New York offices of AOL. Looks like their summer Friday won't include knocking off work early, but they will get a health care professional in office fielding their questions on Tuberculosis! Why? They just received the following in their inbox:

Dear AOL colleague,

Thursday evening we were notified that a contractor who provided services at our New York offices has tested positive for an active strain of tuberculosis. This person worked in the offices at 75 Rock and the AOL offices at 1270 Avenue of the Americas, but hasn't been in either office since mid-July.

While we don't know which specific strain of TB this person contracted, we currently have no information to suggest that it is one of the relatively rare forms that are resistant to antibiotics.

Nevertheless, we are taking every precaution to minimize risk. Last night, we dispatched a specialized service to thoroughly clean all the common areas in both our New York offices. This afternoon, we'll have a health care professional in the New York office (75 Rock) to answer questions. At the same time, we will be working closely with the New York Department of Health to make sure we are taking any and all additional steps needed to protect your health.

If you have any specific concerns, we suggest you consult your personal physician. You can read more about TB and its signs and symptoms here.

We will continue to provide updates as soon as we have more specific information. Your health and safety are a top priority for us.

Sincerely,

[Name redacted]

After Andrew Speaker put the TB-fear in just about everyone, there's no doubt extra precautions are being taken in this case.

"Cough, cough...." - hmmm, I should get that checked.

TB is the new bird flu. Sharks are sooooo two summers ago.

This is from the link for TB symptoms which describes "latent" TB infection:

"People with latent TB infection have TB germs in their bodies, but they are not sick because the germs are not active. These people do not have symptoms of TB disease, and they cannot spread the germs to others. However, they may develop TB disease in the future."

So even though you have no symptoms, you can still have TB. I'm sure that employees at AOL will find that very reassuring.

I'm willing to bet that there is at least one moron employee in the AOL office who is now spraying Lysol all over the place.

AOL still has offices? Why aren't they belly up by now?

This is not the first time I'm heard of someone in NY having TB. This girl I went to college with got it about 2 years ago and had to move back home.

Thank you so much for using a giant microbe for part of that graphic.
